Abstract

AbstractIn September and October 2013, only one week apart,Bali hosted two global events in the upper class markettourism resort Nusa Dua. The first event was the MissWorld beauty pageant, and the other one was the APECSummit. Thousands of journalists from all over the worldcovered these events. From a tourism marketing point ofview, these two prestigious events helped Bali boost itspopularity through global mass media. Historically, sincethe early phase of its development, Bali’s tourism industryhas received many benefits from global forces initiallychanneled out through the Dutch colonial power in the firstdecade of the twentieth century and later through nationaland multinational corporations. The recent enlisting byUNESCO of Bali’s cultural landscape as a world heritagesite (2012) provides yet another great example of how Balicontinues to receive global endorsement by world institutions as a unique tourism destination. This paper discusesopportunities and challenges caused by globalizationand localization phenomena in the management of Bali’stourism island destination. Bali’s experiences provide aninteresting example of how global and local stakeholdersdevelop the island tourism in a sustainable manner whileat the same time continuing to preserve its local arts andculture as one of its main attractions. While there aremany examples how both forces contribute to numerousopportunities toward the development of Bali’s tourism,it is also true to state that impacts of globalization causesvarious forms of distraction for the island’s ability to takefull control of its vast move of development.

Abstract

This article examines tajen (cockfighting) and representation of Balinese women in two short stories, “Tajen” (Faisal Baraas, 1971) and “Tajen Terakhir” (Gde Aryantha Soethama, 2016). This topic was chosen because in the world of tajen men are represented of having the absolute power over Balinese women. Selected descriptive qualitative approach, intertextuality approach, and parallel reading data analysis method. Problem solved with new historicism theory. Data in the form of literary text and nonliterature text about tajen. The nonliterature texts as a co-text, such as Balinese folklore, traveling report, Balinese cockfighting manuscript, and research report about tajen. The results concluded three points. First, the world of tajen represented in both short stories were dynamic constellation of a number of aspects, such as male/gambler, betting, rooster, and victory obsession. Second, the obsession with the victory is above family, wife, and children matters. Third, women in the world of tajen become subordinate and sexual objects of men. The tragic fate of women in the world of tajen occurs because of the practice of patriarchy ideology.

Abstract

The focus of this article is about ellipsis that occurs in the discourse in the Balinese folklore. Ellipsis is a part of the cohesiveness of a discourse so that it becomes a complete discourse. The research method used is descriptive qualitative analysis. This study uses ellipsis theory from Halliday and Hasan which is supported by McCarthy's ellipsis deixis theory. The data source was taken from a collection of tales in the Balinese language, namely the book Pupulan Satua Bali II. The results of this study indicate that the ellipsis that occurs in the book of fairy tales is in the form of nominal ellipsis which refers to humans (people) in the conversation and story prologue, verbal ellipsis that occurs in fairy tale conversations, refers to lexical ellipsis in the verb word class, and the ellipsis of clauses because clauses are considered as expressions of speech functions, such as statements, questions, responses, and clauses that have a structural part consisting of core and propositional elements. Even though there is an ellipsis, the process of conveying the content and message of the story is still effective.

Abstract

AbstractIn this article, I question the conceptual categories of“religion”, “agama”, “dharma”, and “Hinduism”, in orderto investigate through which processes and within whichcontexts the Balinese religion resulted in being construedas agama Hindu. After having investigated how theSanskrit loanword agama came to designate in Indonesiaan Islamic conception of what “religion” is about, I assessthe similarities between the construction of Indian Neo-Hinduism and the interpretation of the Balinese religion asagama Hindu. In particular, I pay attention to the controversywhich has been dividing the Balinese intelligentsia overthe proper name of their religion, as it reveals a perennialconflict between the Balinese who want to retain thespecificity of their customary ritual practices, and thosewho aspire to reform the Balinese religion by conformingit to what they think Hinduism is about.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to look for the meanings of the Balinese temple Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana in Jayapura in building harmony in the land of Papua. The life of Jayapura people is identical with the frequent riots. It looks different from the life of the Balinese diaspora around the temple Surya Bhuvana which marked by inter-religious harmony. The study focused on two issues: Why do non-Hindus in Jayapura often visit the Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana? How do they understand the temple Surya Bhuvana in this global era? This is a qualitative research and data were collected through observation, interview, FGD, and document study techniques. Data were analyzed with religious theory, symbol theory, and structural-functional theory. The results showed that the hospitality of the Balinese diaspora who manages the temple makes non-Hindus community feel welcome to visit the temple. The Balinese diaspora community in Jayapura interpreted Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana as a place of worship, a meeting place for people of different faiths, a place of art, a place to strengthen multi-cultural life and as a medium to strengthen national integration. Keywords: Bali diaspora, Pura Agung Surya Bhuvana, the harmony of religious life, the global era.

Abstract

AbstractThis article examines short stories and novels by Balinese writers that depictmeetings, friendships and love affairs between Balinese and Western characters. The works discussed were written either in the national or the Balinese languageand were published between the 1960s and 2000s, coinciding with the developmentof mass tourism in Bali. One distinctive feature of the works is that narrators avoidmixed marriages between Balinese and Westerners despite the love between them. This recurrent theme goes against reality in which mixed marriage is common andaccepted in the Balinese community. During the period in which these works werepublished, the discourse on Balinese cultural identity has been very important andhighly debated in the mass media against the backdrop of the tourism industryand its potential negative impacts. This article argues that Balinese writers useliterary works to articulate their opinion about the importance of Balinese peoplemaintaining their Balineseness or cultural identity. Their works are meaningfulwhen viewed as an expression of Balinese identity politics in facing what isconsidered to be the growing threat of tourism.
