Abstract

AbstractThe political violence in Bali period 1946-1950, due to the differences of ideology, tactic, and the goal of struggle, betweentraditional elite against republican elites. The traditional elites (the monarch in Bali) who adopted cooperative-federalism aimed to establish The United Indonesia Republic accord to Dutch commonwealth. Involving Bali as part of East Indonesia State`s territory could maintain the status quo of Bali`smonarchy as traditional monarch. Otherwise, the republicanelites who adopt the unitary state and non-cooperative aimthat Bali tied together with The Republic of Indonesia`sterritory, because East Indonesia State was establised by Dutch government. The signatory to the Linggarjati treaty caused for theexistence of Republic of Indonesia`s territory beyond Java ,such as, Madura and Sumatra became uncertain. This moment is exploited by Dutch government (Van Mook) to conduct Denpasar Conference that succeeded to formulate the establishment of the regulation of East Indonesia State. Since, Bali had belonged to the territory of East Indonesia State has changed the situation that caused difficulties for armament battle in Bali. Therefore the Commander of The General HeadQuarter of The Indonesian People Struggle`s Council of Small Sundanese Area (Pimpinan Markas Besar Umum IndonesiaSunda Kecil) changed the strategy of struggle from military passive to diplomatic active through East Indonesia State`s Parliament and General Assembly, as well.By the speech of East Indonesian State Parliament member swho came from Bali, claimed that Bali to become consistently as part of Republic of Indonesia`s territory. As the Dutch government transferred the sovereignty to United Indonesia Republic, the people coming from all over of East Indonesian Republic demanded to dissolve United Indonesia Republic.Accordingly, the Balinese warrior youth claimed to dissolveBali`s Monarch Council (Dewan Raja Raja) and Bali`s GeneralAssembly (Paruman Agung) changed to be more democratic. In order to revert to unity and integrity of Indonesia, the government of United Indonesia Republic issued the Emergency Regulation Number 44/1950 that changed government system from monarchy system to be more democratic system. That change is indicated by circulated the Republican elite to be Bali`s Governor replaced the institution of Bali`s Monarch Assembly (Dewan  Raja Raja) and TheTemporary Parliament of Bali`s Province (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Sementara) replacing the Bali`s General Assembly (Paruman Agung). The representative of political party whocame from republican elite became the member of Temporary Parliament of Bali`s Province.

Abstract

The pandemic has paralyzed global tourism. In Bali, impacts of the pandemic on the tourism industry has been enormous. Almost all hotels stop operating, even if one opens, that opens itself to quarantine for Covid sufferers. This article examines the condition of hotels in Bali and the coping strategies adopted during the outbreak. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach using in-depth interviews and literature studies on books, scientific journals, and online news. This research focuses on Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, Alila Seminyak Bali, and Puri Saron Seminyak with reasons of star level representation and customer types. The results of this study indicate that the impact of the pandemic has resulted in almost zero hotels occupancy. They shared the same strategies that included to permanently and temporarily terminate employees, limit the use of hotel facilities, spend efficiency, sell non-room products online, and refuse booking refunds by changing visit schedules.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to analyse Thomas Reuter’s seminal text The Custodians of the Sacred Mountains and to discuss some of the theoretical and other issues that flow from the reading. Indirectly it is also intended to assist many local scholars who find the text somewhat impenetrable, let alone making connections to its extensive implications. The book is the second study to emerge that covers the regional basis for the Bali Aga, the first being that of Wälty (1997). The text is one of a kind - erudite, complex and intellectually challenging. The paper begins with historical interventions since the status economy of Bali Aga is wholly dependent on a mythical past. Next, the use of theory, focussing on anthropology and Bali studies is discussed to place Reuter’s work in context. Then his basic concepts are analysed, those of precedence, status, and representation. Subsequently, we focus on place and space since geography is a defining feature of Bali Aga. Finally the mental (symbolic) and material (political economy) dimensions are contrasted with the observation that omission of any consideration of the latter weakens an otherwise seminal work.

Abstract

AbstractBalinese traditional home is one of traditional architectures in Indonesia in which it still survives up to now. The home as a part of Balinese Traditional Architecture derives from Balinese Hindu belief and their custom which have a lot of Hindu philosophy. Base on this philosophy, the house which is created as a model of human being and a model divine of macro cosmos. The aim of this is to create harmony between micro cosmos (human being) and macro cosmos (nature). Physically, the usage of body measurements in the whole building dimensions has approved of how the implementation of a model of human being is created. Another thing is of how to abstractly create the building to have a soul through using basic dimension, mantra, and ritual for permission to the holy and devil spirit. Because of this, the building becomes a really unique thing. However, an interesting question reveals in relation to green building i.e. how does a Balinese traditional home create a comfortable internal environment without resorting energy usage? The presented paper has addressed it which is approached from the building layout to the building components. From those, the home appears that it has fully accounted to respond a warm-humid zone of the tropical climate. And a comfortable internal environment can be reached maximally through the use of open air concept or courtyard pattern in the building composition, most open and small buildings, the use of non bearing wall and also the critical point is the use of natural materials with low heat storage and large air cavity. Therefore, this means that the Balinese home has performed itself as a green building.

Abstract

AbstractSarad and jatah are offerings presented during big temple ceremonies(odalan), when the gods come down for visits. One of the favorite daysfor such ceremonies falls on the full moon of the 10th month of theBalinese lunar-solar (Saka) calendar. The sarad and jatah offerings arevisual representations of the world in its Hindu-Balinese version. Thisrepresentation follows the depiction of the world given in the story of theChurning of the Milky Sea (Mandara Giri) such as told in the Old-Javanesetext Adiparwa. The sarad and jatah represent the dialectics of the positiveand the negative found in Hinduismm (rwa bhinneda), but their verticalstructure symbolizes the symbolic tripartition (Tri Loka) of the worldinto Bhur Loka, Bhwah Loka and Swah Loka. This article is based on on thespot observation and in-depth interviews held at the three locations oftemples: Besakih, Ulun Batur and Taro. Apart from a study of meaningof the two offerings, this article expounds the physical (food) and socialprocessses involved in their making. From the point of view of the writer, who is a non-Balinese, this study of sarad and jatah is also a means ofher own character-building in the nation-building context of multi-ethnicIndonesia.

Abstract

Western historical scholarship has taught us much about Southeast Asia in the period between 1800 and 1940. This was a time when the insistent, intensifying and transforming influence of Dutch colonial society and its culture became widespread in Bali and more broadly in the archipelago. Much too has been written about the analytical framework of European histories of these times. In this essay I discuss Balinese paintings from this same period which shed light on how painters and their works spoke to their viewers both about how the Balinese knew, imagined, thought and felt about the world in which they lived and about the visual representation and communication of these ideas, imaginings and feelings through the medium of narrative paintings. In this paper I hope to draw attention to a number of historiographical issues concerning the reception of the ideas, imaginings and feelings conveyed in paintings. In particular I shall have some remarks to make about the role of philology in this regard.

The data in the form of quantitative appropriateness were collected by means of questionnaire and observation with eliciting technique. The collected data were analyzed descriptively. The result of the study shows that with respect to Balinese speakers’ loosely respective forms of utterances (1) quantitatively, there was no appropriateness between verbal communication acts and nonverbal communication acts and (2) there was an appropriateness between verbal communication acts and nonverbal communication acts, in the sense that the presence of nonverbal communication acts was notparticularly intended to respect the interlocutors, but it was merely intended (1) to complete verbal messages (2) to clarify verbal messages, and (3) to emphasize verbal messages being delivered.

Abstract

AbstractThis study analyses the poem titled Geguritan Yadnya ringKuruksetra (The poem on Religious Ritual in Kurusektra)written by Ida Bagus Rai by focusing it on the concept ofrelease (kelepasan), that is the union with God. As a traditionalBalinese literature, this geguritan contains religious valuesand suitable to be applied in the life of an increasinglycomplex and pragmatic situation in the globalization era.In Geguritan Yadnya ring Kuruksetra the author describedthe effort towards deliverance through the implementationof Catur Marga teaching (four-ways) through the charactersof a brahmin family who always bow down and devotionto God, always practice of religious teaching, doing goodand carry out yoga for self-control. The description of effortundertaken by this brahmin family figures reflects theimplementation of elements of Catur Marga that includes thedevotion through pray, knowledge, act, and yoga. Based onthe analysis, this article argues that this geguritan needs tobe promoted widely so that it can be read by more peoplebecause it can deepen their religious knowledge necessary toguide the behavior of doing good.
