Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has devastated Bali's economy which relies on the tourism sector. The impact is felt in the informal sector, including scavengers, especially women scavengers who depend on garbage piles. The double burden position they have been doing so far has been exacerbated by the presence of the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper analyzes the condition of women scavengers at TPST Monang Maning, Denpasar, in their roles in the domestic and public spheres and reveals the implications during the pandemic. This research uses observation, interview and literature techniques. This paper uses an approach to the function of women in the domestic and public sphere and a subaltern study approach to see the implications of the double burden of women scavengers’s phenomenon during the pandemic. The results showed that the double burden phenomenon experienced by women scavengers was increasingly burdensome during the pandemic. Limited space for movement in the public sphere and additional burdens in the domestic sphere have implications for their position as a subaltern or dominated group. The patriarchal culture that led them to a subaltern position grew stronger during the pandemic.

Abstract

Agriculture is the foundation of sustainable gastronomy. With or without the Corona pandemy, rice-based meals such as uduk, red, campur, and tumpeng make up Indonesians’ staple food. This article analyzes how novel Balinese culinary technique enriches gastronomy and lifestyle, by blending old and new menus and thus engineering the hybrid gastronomy of the future. This research utilized qualitative explorative area of Jatiluwih and bamboo tabah cultivation in Tabanan District, Bali. Both Jatiluwih rice and bamboo tabah offer the possibility to spur culinary creativity while respecting the theory of gastronomy localisation. Typical magibung as Balinese collective eating is also a healthy moment of ethno-pedagogy for touristic purposes with local content. Regarding sustainable gastronomy in Bali, magibung with rice from Jatiluwih and tabah bamboo are topic of studies that come under the aegis “Nusantara Culinary Sociology”, a subject proposed to sociology and other students in Udayana University.

Abstract

This research aims to study the revitalization of quotidian ties as a medium of establishing social reharmonization between the Balinese Hindu diaspora and Sasak Moslem in Mataram city. This revitalization was carried out post-conflict between the two ethnic groups in a number of areas. This phenomenon is related to the representation of local wisdom as posessing noble values instilled by the ancestors of the two ethnic groups toward realizing mutualistic communication and interaction. This study was designed using an interpretative-descriptive approach in order to conduct an in-depth analysis of the research focus. This study found innovations relating to the implementation of quotidian ties, specifically through the revitalization of individual and collective consciousness based on quotidian ties, the strengthening of multicultural ties between the two ethnic communities, the valorization of local wisdom involving the participation of different ethnic groups, and the contestation of cultural capital in the implementation of adat and religious practices. Recommendations of this study are to build cultural awareness through attitudes that mutually recognize and accept differences.
