Abstract

The present essay is about the interpretation of paintings and how an interest which Balinese painters display in gender relationships in the context of illustrations of ritual in their narrative works on the one hand, contrasts with strong expressions of Dutch disapproval of the despotic nature of the rule of Balinese kings and consequentially the unjust treatment of women in Balinese society on the other. With this in mind, the present paper first considers the representation of gender relationships in a number of Balinese paintings from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and then turns to a discussion of the understanding of Balinese gender relationships of two members of Dutch colonial society in the Dutch East Indies, one a senior bureaucrat, Graaf C.W.S van Hogendorp and the other the protestant missionary R. van Eck. I discuss a play by Graaf C.W.S van Hogendorp, ‘Pièce de Circonstance sur la conquête de Bali 1846’, written to celebrate the victory of the Dutch army over the Kingdom of Buleleng in 1846 and an article about ‘Het Lot der Vrouw op Bali’ (‘The lot of the Balinese woman’), published in the journal Tijdschrift voor Indische Taal-, Land-, en Volkenkunde in 1872 by the protestant missionary R. van Eck.

Abstract

Conducting cremation ceremony (ngaben) in crematorium among Balinese Hindus is relatively a new phenomenon, pioneered by Maha Gotra Pasek Sanak Sapta Rsi, the biggest maxima-clan in Bali. This maxima-clan constructed a crematorium called Santhayana in 2008. The number of cremation ceremony conducted in Crematorium Santhayana increases over time, mainly due to the practical values and efficiency, compared to conducting the ceremony conventionally in one’s own village. The more affordable cost and the less intensive communication with the village of origin are yet additional reasons, especially for those residing outside Bali. By employing participant-observation and in-depth interviews in data collection, analysed qualitative-interpretively, this research confirmed Giddens’ Structuration theory, that as duality, structure is both constraining and enabling the actors. On the other hand, actors’ patterned activities will develop new structure. However, it is interesting in the case of cremation in crematorium Santhayana, that the transformation toward modernity is by making use of traditional reference, i.e. old lontar, named Yama Purana Tatwa.

Abstract

Ethics of leadership has been dominated by western views about ruling a country; hence marginalizing local cultural ethics of leadership in practice. This paper explores the ethics of leadership as contained in the Balinese text ?iv?gama composed by Ida Pedanda Madé Sidêmên (1858–1984) and its relevance for the modern era. Data was taken from lontar palm-leaf manuscripts and analyzed in a qualitative way focusing on the conception of nava natya (nine ethical principles) of leadership. Also included was the pañca visaya, five external objects and the corresponding senses, which can cause harm when facing enemies. In the past, these ethical principles were used as the basis upon which the royal system of governance was practiced for the welfare of all. This concept is still relevant nowadays as long as service is considered to be a human virtue. The research results thus offer a contribution to the study of leadership ethics in the Old Javanese tradition.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning behind verbal, non-verbal sign, and ideological contained in advertisements written in Balinese-language. This study applied a critical descriptive approach. Eleven Balinese-language advertisements are the study data obtained from the field-observation and analyzed qualitatively by using semiotics, semantics and ideology theories. The results showed that the emergence of grammatical adjective category jaen dominated all culinary data used in this study. Jaen (delicious) is a taste to express food culinary production. There are two advertisements that use the word Jaen metaphorically, such as an expression for orgasmic activity in sexual intercourse, which is contextually understandable. Furthermore, certain verbs used are quite varied and contained a different ideology. Based on the sentence structure, all the study samples used simple sentences and an imperative sentence. There is no rhetorical device in the whole advertisements, but the ideology that stands out is to prioritize local content to persuade consumers.

Abstract

Iconography is the study of the art of sculpture. The statue is a symbol of God or the embodiment of a deceased public figure. In Indonesia in general and Bali in particular, the tradition of making statues has a long history, from the time of farming to the days of the influence of Hindu and Buddhist civilization. During the Hindu and Buddhist era, the development of statues with Hindu and Buddhist motifs was developed. This research is focused on Hindu-style statues found in Gianyar, Bangli, and Buleleng Regencies. Hindu iconographic research aims to obtain the historical pictures of the arts of the statues, their forms, functions, and meanings in people's lives. The results show that Hindu iconography in Bali has various forms, with different functions from the original functions. Likewise, the meanings depend on the community that makes meanings in the present context.
