Abstract

In this article I will identify and discuss the interpretational assumptions of two contemporary interpretational approaches to the interpretation of the Qur’a>n and Sunna that I refer to as premodern and critical progressive and explain their interpretational assumptions and implications. Abstract

This essay looks at some Salafi tafsirs to examine the extent to which their interpretation ignores or rejects both the socio-historical context of revelation and that of interpretation, and the extent to which their interpretation denies any possibility to understand differently. Taking the hijabs verses as a a case study, the author shows similarities and differences between the three tafsirs under scrutiny in terms of their “textualism” and “authoritarianism”

Abstract

This article discusses the debates on the use of rasm ‘Uthmani in the writing of the Qur’an. By comparing and analyzing the arguments of three madhhabs, this article argues that the debate has to be ended, since, in principle, the recitation of the Qur’an does not only refer to the text’s writing, but also to its chain of transmission

Abstract

Hadith studies in contemporary period developed into two different approaches: traditional and revisionist approach. Fuat Sezgin, Nabia Abbott, and M.M Azami were the students of Hadith using traditional approach. In studying Hadith, they departed from Islamic basic assumption and scientific method, especially the method of Hadith and rijal sciences. In their works, they never criticized Islamic sources. They believed in what was said, transmitted, interpreted, and written by early muslim generation as what really happened. On the contrary, Ignaz Goldziher, Joseph Schacht, and G.H.A. Juynboll were the students of Hadith using revisionist approach who always see Islamic sources critically and sceptically. They didn’t believe in the authenticity of the Islamic sources before they proved that the authenticity of the sources was verified by applying a source critical method. The use of a source critical method was to be special characteristic of revisionist approach in studying the prophetic Hadith.

Abstract

There are two aspects in the personality of the Prophet Muhammad: revelation and culture. Both of them developped the character and the behavior of the Prophet Muhammad as a mere human being as well as a prophet. It is difficult sometimes to differentiate between these two entities. However, the failure to distinguish the two, this article argues, will mythologize the life of the Prophet and then finally sacralize him. Therefore, this article proposes that the understanding of the sirah nabawiyah is the key in demythologization of the life of the Prophet

Abstract

This article tries to trace and explain the relation between “the political movement” and “the hadith movement” in the first three centuries of Islam, particularly in Shi‘ah and Nasb sectes. This research uses historical and geo-political approaches in analyzing the transmission of hadith conducted by these two sectes. This article shows that the transmitters of hadith who supported ‘Ali were mostly in Kufah, while those who hated ‘Ali (Nasb) were in Damascus

Abstract

This article discusses the modern trends in Qur’anic interpretation: the hermeneutical approach and the thematic one. It will first elaborate the origin of hermeneutics, how it has been used by many Muslim scholars, and why many Muslims regarded negatively to this approach. The article then discusses the second approach which is the most used in the Qur’anic interpretation, because, this article argues, it has many advantages, compared to the previous one. At the end, this article proposes the integration between the two approaches
