Abstract

To determine the authenticity of hadith, we need to analyze its chain of transmission and its content. The analysis of the chain of transmission is conducted through the data collection in the literature of tarajum al-ruwat, by analyzing the concept used in sanad criticism. Among the critique of hadith, some scholars used a concept generally used by others, but they understand it differently. Others use special concept not usually used by others, without explaining what they mean by that concept. There are also others who explain the biography of the hadith transmitters, without explaining their qualities,  Al-Bukhari (d. 265 H) is among the ciritique of hadith who use these three concepts. This article, using content analysis methodology, tries to analyze and understand these three concepts.

This article discusses how Bahtsul Masail Institution in Nahdlatul Ulama uses religious texts – the Qur’an and Hadith – independently from the socio-historical context of Muslim community in Indonesia. The main source of this research is Ahkamul Fuqaha: Solusi Problematika Hukum Islam, Keputusan Muktamar, Munas dan Konbes Nahdlatul Ulama (1926-2004). Abstract

The Qur’an translation in Bahasa Indonesia by the Ministry of Religious Affairs has been criticized by Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia. This translation, according to them, is one of the factors that produces radicalism. On the basis of this claim, this article discusses Tarjamah Tafsiriyah: Memahami Makna al-Qur’an Lebih Mudah dan Cepat (2011) by Muhammad Thalib, the Amir of MMI. Using the descriptive analysis approach, this article shows that Tarjamah Tafsiriyah has several advantages, such as its short redaction and interpretive translation, although worth criticizing the emphasis on a certain meaning and the lack of attention to the text’s variety of meaning.

Abstract

This article aims to prove that the interpretation of the verses of the Qur’an by using a rational approach to the political vision has a tendency to release an understanding of the text from its real context. This often makes an interpretation of these verses that are interpreted to justify and legalize the ideology that is being held. Based on the study of the works of supporters and leaders of the Negara Islam Indonesia (NII), this study proves that their interpretation is so far detached from the historical context of the Qur’an. More than once, the article insists, one verse is interpreted too far to legalize their aspiration without giving any reference to the traditions which are related to the context of the Qur’an, and the opinions of the previous ‘ulama’ and interpreters of the Qur’an, who are considered more authoritative in giving an interpretation to the verses of the Qur’an.

Abstract

This article argues that no Qur’anic interpretation is objective. Qur’anic interpretation is influenced by the interest, values and the background of its interpreters. This article will identify some of the biases in the existing Qur’anic interpretations, which are mostly written by male scholars, on gender issues such as the first human creation and male leadership, and will re-interpret the verses from equal gender perspective. This article will also argue that the correct interpretation is the one which is closer to the fundamental teaching of Islam, mainly equality and justice. Only Allah knows the ma‘na (the real/correct meaning) of the haqiqi Qur’an, but if Muslims believe that Allah is just, then it is impossible for Allah to reveal its message in the Qur’an to support injustice. Therefore, if Muslims interpret the Qur’an to support injustice, then their interpretations may be incorrect because they contradict the nature of God, who is just.
