Abstract

The major problem discussed in this article is the presence of domestic violence conducted by husbands towards their wives in their marriages. Several verses of the Qur’an have been used to legitimize these arrogant actions. Using religious texts and culture of patriarchy, domestic violence seems to persist. This article discusses the interpretation of some verses of the Qur’an, especially the mystical interpretation, which is related to the rights of wives in marriage. Two mystical interpretations are the case of the study, i.e., Ruh al-Ma‘ani of al-Alusi and al-Fawatih al-Ilahiyya of al-Jilani. This article describes analytically and critically explores the ideas of al-Jilani and al-Alusi about women’s rights in Islam.

Abstract

Some of the ulama’s views related to women (the origin of creation, temptressness and lack of rationality), are considered to be biased and misogynistic by M. Quraish Shihab. These viewpoints, according to Shihab, rooted in long-standing old views that harrassed and marginalized women. These views cannot be justified either by reasons or religion, although some of them used religious texts. This article addresses Shihab’s criticism against the views of scholars that he considers to be biased. The data are obtained from the works of M. Quraish Shihab, particularly on Perempuan in addition to al-Misbah. The data are analyzed using content analysis and gender perspectives. The significance of this study is to show that the religious texts (both the Qur’an and Hadith) associated with women tend to be interpreted in accordance with mufassir’s perception.

Abstract

This article discusses the Haqa’iq al-Tafsir by al-Sulami against the extant accusation of being Shi’ite. It is a certainly Sunnite commentary accumulated from their-own traditional sources as well as representing Sunnite theological principles. Despite its contentious title as well as the use of weak hadiths, the nature of Sulami’s tafsir was relatively free from either Shi’ite elements or mystico-philosophical notions contradictory to the spirit of Sunnite orthodoxy. Al-Sulami’s tafsir is to be classified ma’thur, but it conceives spiritual significances (haqa’iq) that might have been set beyond the common objectives of Qur’anic tafsir in general. It is not a general tafsir for laymen, but an esoteric interpretation of the Qur’anic verses for the elites of sufi readers.

Abstract

This article examines the intensiveness, centrality and nature of inner-Quranic exegetical method – a method sometimes considered as providing more objectivity – employed by the Mauritanian-born exegete Muhammad al-Amin al-Shanqiti (19071973) in his Adwa’ al-Bayan. It compares the statistics of cross-referring of verses in this tafsir to that in other tafsirs known as also applying the method – in an attempt to show the level of its intensiveness. In addition, it also seeks to assess the centrality of this method in Adwa’al-Bayan by comparing statistical references to sources outside the Qur’an. In reviewing Adwa’al-Bayan’s style of interpreting al-Qur’an with al-Qur’an, this article looks at its application in the commentary of Sura Yasin.

Abstract

Hermeneutics opens up possibilities to understand something as comprehensive as possible, and at the same time, as various as possible. There can be as many readings as the number of readers or even more readings than the number of the readers as they can deploy different points of views, approaches and methods in one object. This article formulates the question of what implications does hermeneutical reading for the study of the Qur’an may have? While the result of hermeneutical reading can be as productive as possible accordingly, its implications are of variety. However in this article, two implications will be discussed: one implication on scientific necessity and the other is on productivity of reading. Two cases will be discussed here: the Qur’an as textus receptus and as discourse.

Abstract

This article would like to show that the Qur’an has influenced the development of Islamic civilization and sciences. In order to prove that, this article will tackle two questions, firstly when did the Arabic literacy tradition develop in Arab community, and secondly, which factors did influence the development of Islamic civilization. This article argues against Ibn Khaldun (d. 808 H), who claims that literacy depends on the economic development. According to the author of this article, this condition is not relevant with the Arab community, since the economi condition of the Arabs at the time was not prosperous. This article argues that piety, religiousity, and Muslim dedication to learn from the Qur’an which influence the development of Islamic civilization.

Abstract

This article argues that the Qur’an is, among other thing, a literature, and therefore can be approached with literary interpretation. In order to support this idea, the article starts with demonstrating the literariness of the Qur’an; showing the characteristics of literary interpretation of the Qur’an; and ends with discussing the debates on literary interpretation of the Qur’an. The approach used in this article is literary to argue for the literariness and literary interpretation of the Qur’an.

Abstract

This article proves that Asbab al-Nuzul is an important element in interpreting the Qur’an and is a part of Ulum al-Qur’an. The result of this article has proven the weakness of Shahrur’s opinion (1938-...) expressing that present-time interpretation does not need the Asbab al-Nuzul, because, according to him, that tradition was only a form of history in interpretation, which is applicable only for the time of revelation, and not applicable in the present time. This article strengthens Abu Zaid’s opinion (1943-…) which considers Asbab al-Nuzul as historical information and as important element in Qur’anic interpretation at the same time. This article also supports Fazlurrahman’s view (d. 1988) which makes Asbab al-Nuzul -- either in macro or in micro -- as historical information that must be known and used in interpretation

Abstract

This article discusses the issue of interreligious mariage in the formative era of Islam. It discusses the different opinions found in the time of the Prophet Muhammad, his Companions and his Followers. The primary sources of this article are the books of Hadith, the classical tafsirs which record the interpretation of the Qur’an in the Formative Period, and the book of history, such as Tabari’s Tarikh. This article concludes that there are two opinions in terms of interreligious marriage: those who opine the permissibility and those who opine the impermisibility
