Abstract

The previous studies of islamization in Java follow a clear distinction of priyayi-abangan-santri thesis, which was in its development gradually incompatible to capture the changing of political preferences of Javanese Muslims. This paper examines what kind of patterns formed on the dynamics of the process of Islamization in Java under the influence of socio-political changes. The output of this paper perhaps shows the pattern of islamization in Java under the dynamic changes of Indonesian politics in the early twentieth century. The pattern of islamization in Java was influenced, firstly, by ethical policy, secondly, the transmission of Middle East Islam, and, thirdly, politization of Islam by colonial government. The ethical policy encouraged the creation of a public space for political contestations that determined the new identity of Indonesian elite. The transmission of Middle Eastern Islam triggered the polarization of Javanese Muslims into two patterns: the modernist Muslim strengthened the pattern of priyayi-santri in urban communities with Islamization through modern institutions. The traditionalist Muslim developed an intellectual genealogy through pesantren networks scattered in the rural areas created the pattern of santriabangan. Meanwhile the politization of Islam by colonial government created a benefit to the unification of Islamic institutions.

Abstract

It will be more accurate to understand Islam in the Southeast Asia if the respective backgrounds of geo-political history are understood in particular. Western colonial influence such as Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English, French and United States that makes up the typology of Southeast Asian Islamic culture, strengthens the plurality of their Islamic character that seems increasingly clear. Philippine Muslim communities, that form the community of the Moro Islamic movement, are the products of the Spanish and the United States colonial policy, which determines the fate and treats Muslims as a conquered state. This long history results in the emergence of a heroic character in Philippines Muslims which is different from other Muslims in Southeast Asia that are relatively considered quiet and peaceful. Doing historiography of Islam in Southeast Asia without involving cases of Muslims in Philippines will not find the plurality of character.

Abstract

The Wasatiyyah or moderation Institute for Peace and Development was initiated by the current Chularajmontri, Aziz Pithakkompon on 21th August 2014, with the aims of fostering harmony among the diverse ethnics in the country and providing a counter-balance to extremism and extremist as it is taking place in various parts of the world and promoting moderation and peace among Muslims in Thai society. The concept of wasatiyyah or moderation is appropriate to be highlighted and practiced in Thai society to curb extremist activities in all matters. Even though some negative perceptions were voiced by a few parties, but the actual intentions could result in a decline of racial strains, as being moderate has been the practice of the Malay community and its leaders for ages. In fact, this approach has contributed to the success of the Malay community in the Deep South in securing the Malay indentity from their Buddhist neighburs in the country, without having to resort to spilling a lot of blood. Based on previous research, it was observed that the concept of wasatiyyah had a great influence on the Malays, as it had a strong link with the Islamic values that have been embedded in the Malay community. The Islamic values are the main elements that shape the Malays’ conduct, and it is the results of interaction with social norms, for it has bred certain social values that include compromise, modesty, respect and cooperation as transpired when Malays interact among themselves or with other communities. The main goal for the institution to maintain peace and harmony in the society. Based on textual analysis, the study determines that the concept of wasatiyyah concept or moderation is part of the social values borne out of the Malays’ values based on Islamic teachings. Hence, the question is, to what extent does the wasatiyyah concept implemented in the institute. In order to answer the question above, this study has set two main objectives. First, to identify the wasatiyyah concept in Islamic law; and second, to analyse its implementation in the institude. The qualitative study in the form of exploratory and descriptive approach used the content analysis method. The content analysis method was used to identify and analyse the wasatiyyah concept in Islamic law and also to analyse the implementation of the wasatiyyah concept in the institute.

This research used qualitative approach i.e. Analytic Network Process (ANP). For applying this method, it is expected to help the researchers in making measurement and sinthesis of some factors regarding the topic analyzed as well as finding the solution for problems faced by the SMEs. Data used in this research is primary data collected from questionaires and indepth interview with experts, practitioners, SMEs and regulators which then analyzed by structuringthe hierarchi into homogen clusters of the SMEs problems and solutions, measuring into ratio scale and building sinthesis. As the result, it becomes clear what factors impeding the financial access of the SMEs to banks. The results of this research shows that the difficulties of SMEs in accessing financial support in islamic financial institutions are internal problems of islamic banking i.e. 1) lack of financial assistance given to the SMEs, 2) the functions of islamic banking as business partners for SMEs is not optimal. Whereas the external problems in the SMEs is the disability in meeting the financial requirements asked by islamic banking that is collateral and business history. The solutions are: 1) internal solution; islamic banking should give business mentoring to SMEs that have received financial supports to minimalize the bad credits level. 2) external solution; the government should socialize islamic financial mechanism to SMEs as part of education efforts.

Abstract

‘Islamic moderation’has received a great deal of academic and media attention both in the West and in the East. Yet, the denotation of the very term still remains abundantly paradoxical as different regions and contexts provide different sheds of meanings. In the western scholarship, Islamic moderation is concerned with liberal social norms, hermeneutics, political pluralism, democratic process, organizational affinities, and views of state legitimacy over the monopoly of violence, some kind of adaptation, willingness to cooperate or compromise. However, it is by no means exhaustive as its definition in Islamic scholarship provides some unlike constituents. To define moderation, Muslim scholars, firstly explores to lexical meanings of its Arabic substitute “wasatiyyah”. Secondly, they explore the textual meanings of the word “wasatiyyah” used in the orthodox text i.e the Quran and traditions (Sunnah) of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). According to them, moderation is a best suited, justly balanced or middle position between two extremes i.e. extremism and laxity. Their use of the term, is contextualized in terms of counter-extremism, modest socio-religious behaviour and temperate legal position. This research finds out a considerable textual and contextual difference in the use of the term ‘Islamic moderation’ between the East and the West. Hence, this study aims to explore the lack of integration between both scholarships in this issue.
