Abstract

A research for determining antimicrobial activity from leaf extract of Syzygium cordatum to E. coli dan S. aureus has been conducted. This research was based on Kirby-Bauer method by using BHIB media and MHA agar. Five hundred gram of sample was dried then extracted with 1 litre methanol. The methanol extract obtained was evaporated with water bath at 50oC. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity test for E. coli and S. aureus was done in different concentration: 60%, 30%, 15%, and 7,5%. Inhibition activity of leaf extract of S. cordatum to S. aureus in 60% concentration is 16,5 mm. In concentration of 30%, 15%, and 7,5%, the inhibition activity for S. aureus were 14.5 mm, 13,5 mm, and 11 mm. Inhibition activity for positive control (Chloramphenicol) is 24,5 mm for E. coli and S. aureus. No inhibition activity was shown in negative control (methanol) for E. coli and S. aureus. There was no inhibition activity of leaf extract of S. cordatum for E. coli. In conclusion, leaf extract of S. cordatum have antimicrobial activity for S. aureus but not for E. coli. Furthermore, a research to identify this component have to be conducted. Key words: Antimicrobial, Sygyzium cordatum, Staphylococcus aureus, Eschericia coli, Kirby-Bauer method

Abstract

Long term antiretroviral therapy can lead to children body change due to the abnormal fat accumulation, increased level of blood cholesterol and glucose, lipodystrophy, metabolic change, and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Arthrospira platensis is a kind of Cyanobacteria that is safe to consume. It has a high nutritional level and contain HIV-1 inhibitor substances. Arthrospira plantesos contains 70% of protein, vitamin B-12, B-carotene, minerals especially zinc, tocopherol, and a-linolenic acid. Besides, Arthrospira plantesis also contains sulfated hemopolisaccharide substance which is called calcium-spirulan like substance that acts as inhibitor of HIV-1 replication. Hence, Arthrospira plantesis is a potential therapy for children with HIV without disturbing their growth and development. Key word: Arthrospira platensis, children, positive HIV

Abstract

Caffeine is a natural compund in many food and, such as coffee, tea, cocoa, and others. Indonesia is classified as one of the country which consume high number of caffeine. Eventhough caffeine can stimulate central nervous system, it may also bring undesireable effect such as infertility. Through this paper, we would like to review the effect of caffeine on females fertility and the safety limit of caffeine for daily consumption on women. This paper is made with study literature method. There are several studies which indicate that there is a strong relationship between caffeine consumption and infertility. The safety limit of the amount of caffeine that may affect fertility requires more research. Daily consumption of a cup of non-decaffeinated coffee of more showed a significant impact on fertility. There is greater risk of infertility at women who consume the greater amount of caffeine. Key words: caffeine, infertility

Abstract

Chocolate is one of the most common foods which many people consume. Chocolate has many effects to human health, one of which is for cardiovascular system. Some rumors say that chocolate has deteriorating effect for cardiovascular system because of its high fat content. On the other hand, the levels of antioxidants in chocolate said to have a positive effect on cardiovascular system. This paper discusses more about the cardiovascular effects of chocolate. Various literatures starting from year 2003 to 2008 related to the topic is collected to support the writing of this paper. From the results of this literature review, it was found that consumption of chocolate can provide short-term improvement on endothelial function and reduction in systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Other effects such as effects on fat profiles and pulse are still controversial. Underlying component of chocolate that contribute to these effects is flavanoid. Another component of chocolate feared to have deteriorating effect is stearic acid, that may increase blood cholesterol, but it is still not proven in various studies. Author concludes that chocolate has positive short-term effects for cardiovascular system. But because of the limitations of the various studies, long-term effects of chocolate consumption are still not known with certainty. Type of chocolate that was considered as the most useful for cardiovascular system is high-flavanoid content dark chocolate. Key words: chocolate, cardiovascular system, flavanoids, endothelial function, blood pressure

Abstract

The health of mother and child is still a major problem in Indonesia. It is depicted in the high mother and neonatal mortality rate in Indonesia, which is the highest among other countries in South East Asia. In addition, the rate is still far away from the MDG (Millenium Development Goal) 2015 target.Preeclampsia, which is still reported to be the main complicating factor of pregnancy in Indonesia, is a major threat to the mothers life, as well as the infantss. Obviously, it is contributes to the high mother and neonatal mortality rate in Indonesia. In the other hand, preeclampsia can be prevented, one of which is by folic acid supplementation.Researchers have proved that folic acid supplementation can lower homocysteine level, the excessive level of which is a risk factor of preeclampsia. Through folic acid supplementation, it is expected that the frequency of preeclampsia, and consequently, the mother and infant mortality rate will be decreased.Key words: preeclampsia, homocysteine, folic acid supplementation

Abstract

Since its introduction in 1969, problem-based learning (PBL) has revolutionized medical education around the world. Medical schools in Asia had started to apply PBL to their curriculum although PBL itself has a controversial history and had not yet proven to be superior to conventional curriculum. Several studies reported that medical students in Asia were gaining benefits from PBL such as improvement in communication and problem-solving skill and increasing interest in topics being studied. Same studies also reported problems such as low participation during discussion, uncomfortable feeling with independent learning method, and environment which was not conductive for discussion. These problems might be resulted from faculty and students cultural background and their unfamiliarity with PBL. However, there are evidences which showed that Asian students are able to adapt to PBL. In implementing PBL, the faculty must be prepared and able to be flexible in action. Further research is needed to reveal factors that hinder students; learning in PBL. Key words: problem-based learning, medical education, culture, Asia

Abstract

Hitherto, there was no study dedicated to analyze the effect of fasting associated enteroendocrine (EE) cell population remodelling on type 2 diabetes mellitus prevention. This article aimed at discussing the molecular and cellular mechanisms of fasting associated EE cell remodelling to type 2 diabetes mellitus prevention and estimating its effectiveness. It was shown that fasting could inhibit EE cell hyperplasia, thus decreased glucose dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) production from K and L cells. Both hormones caused hyperinsulinemia -via enteroinsular axis- and obesity when they interacted with their respective receptors GIPR and GLP-1R in pancreatic beta cell and adipocyte. This would cause insulin resistance through PI-3 kinase and Cb1. Thus, the levels of GIP and GLP-1 are diabetic predisposition factors. Another study also revealed that EE cell remodelling due to fasting had effective target site on type 2 diabetes mellitus prevention - and was also more superior than GIP and GLP-1 analogs. Key words: type 2 diabetes mellitus, fasting, enteroendocrine cell, GIP, GLP-1
