Abstract

This article is a brief analysis of a novel entitled Mumi Beraroma Minyak Wangi composed by Naning Pranoto (2001). To uncover its content relating to feminism issues, the article looks at first Bourdieu sociology, especially on social space. The subject matter to be dealt with here is focused on social space mobility experienced by the major female character in the story taking the 1965–1997 Indonesia as its background. The basic asumption is that in any social space mobility that occurs, the major female character of the story change her identity as part of the efforts to secure her existence in any environment where she is present. The change in identity forms an expression of concept of identity fluidity, in which one’s identity does not continuously exist in a similar situation. Keywords: feminism, sosial space, identity, fluidity

Abstract

A series of controversies have been a striking phenomenon colouring the existence of tobacco and smoking habit. Drawing upon the available and reachable source materials, mainly secondary ones, the present paper seeks to trace broadly the historical roots of opposition to tobacco and smoking and the recent development of the pro and cons concerning the two issues. A special attention is going to be paid to the arguments built by the conflicting to support their own positions. It is argued that the debates on tobacco and smoking have long taken place, parallel with their spreads from the Americas to the European Continent and the other parts of the world. The debates have been increasingly fierce, in which many parties are getting involved. The present pros and cons conflict might be simplified to certain extent into a battle of “profit versus health”, which is radically different from the earlier battle in which health considerations were initially an integral part of the explanation for tobacco and smoking expansion. In the past the moralistic arguments played a major role in the opposition against tobacco and smoking. Recently the position has been replaced by health issues, serving as the core arguments in the antismoking and tobacco movements emerging over the last couple of decades. Keywords: controversy, tobacco, smoking habit, past time, contemporary period

Abstract

This study aims to understand the process of social construction of hastabrata’s leadership local wisdoms on school principals that has referred to the formal legal leadership stipulated on Ministerial Decree No. 28 of 2010. The research results reveal that the leadership style of the principals who have only based on formal legal rules Ministerial Decree No. 28 of 2010 give poor performance. When the principals apply local knowledge of hastabrata give results in the forms of morality, manners, ethics as contained in 8 hastabrata teachings, namely the character and nature of the symbols of earth, wind, water, moon, sun, sky, fire, and star. Therefore, leadership basing on local knowledge of hastabrata can be applied in relation to the management of human resources, including the relationship with superiors, subordinates, internal or external work units because the modern leadership requires the mastering of science and technology, faith, and obedience. Abstract

Abstract

Being modern in local sphere at the 80s was a complicated process. Local societies experienced and dreamed modern cultures as the dominant discursive formation caused by Green Revolution, but they still believed and practiced traditional cultures. The New Order regime’s developmentalism policy resulted socio-cultural shifting and change in both cities and villages. This article, by combining cultural studies and postcolonial studies, discusses genealogy of socio-cultural shifting and change in a village at the 80s when modern cultures came into peasants’ life--world through public television programs, education, and industrial products. However, I see the villagers could play in-between space to appropriate some modern cultures and negotiate some traditional cultures into their daily life. The cultural in-betweenness has represented the dynamics of village postcoloniality under direction of the New Order regime and has made modernity as ideological dream for the villagers in constructing their locality. Keywords: villagers, modernity, the 80’s, locality, postcoloniality

Abstract

Sutasoma novel composed by Cok Sawitri is based on Sutasoma Kakawin written by Mpu Tantular. Both writings, novel and kakawin (poem), form a different literature genre. The genre transformation from kakawin to novel indicates that Tantular’s Sutasoma finds its transformation in Sawitri’s Sutasoma. Based on this, this article aims at elaborating the transformed elements in the two writings and discussing whether the transformation also has changed the textual stuctures (story), messages, functions. Structural analysis to the texts shows that the transformation has happened to the protagonist, Jayantaka, forming a transformation from Sutasoma and conversely, Sutasoma forms a transformation from Jayantaka. Novel seems to have voiced freedom in choosing faith, whereas kakawin voices the only one best religion. The transformation, however, keep their textual structure and functions unchanged, i.e. life history and serving as a legitimacy for Budhism as the best religion, which during the Majapahit era had been seen as the second and inferior. Keywords: Sutasoma, kakawin, transformation, novel, structure
