Abstract

The globalization has been influential to not only those living in urban area but also those living in hinterland such as the Katab Kebahan Dayak of Melawi District in West Kalimantan. The community members, in fact, have actively engaged with the modernization to support their needs in daily life. Moreover, the Pemekaran Wilayah (the making of a new territory for a District) of Kabupaten Melawi has prompted social changes in the region and promoted social interactions among ethnic groups in the society. Politics of identity has shown to grow. In addition, many aspects of social changes including politics, education, economics and local culture have become influential to the growing of ethic awareness. The Katab Kebahan Dayak identity is a confirmation of the growing of ethnic awareness in the region.

Abstract

The dialog between local culture and religion cannot be separated with the history of religious communities in Indonesia. This article is aimed to describe a form of dialogue between local culture and religion among Muslims of Hatuhaha community in the Central Moluccas. It is particularly to understand forms of dialogue between local culture and religion, specifically Islam in Indonesia. This article is based on a field research in the Haruku island of Central Moluccas in 2009 by using qualitative method. It has been found that, firstly, there has a constructive dialogue between Islam as a religion and local culture since the religion was accepted as a “new ideology” within island communities in Indonesia. Secondly, there are three models of dialogue between the religion and local culture, i.e. “domination”, “accommodation”, and “contextual”.

Abstract

Globalization with its threat that continously plaguing Bali, currently a province of Indonesia in its capacity as an island with natural and cultural uniqueness. This study aims to find out, how big a threat that plagued contemporary Bali, and the role of embarrassment (jengah) in the face. The study founds that embarrassment (jengah) with the transformation of the values they contain contribute positively in the face of threat and is able to guarantee the future sustainability of Bali with its uniqueness. By transforming the values of embarrasment (jengah), Bali provincial government managed to improve their good governance and the nationalism of its apparatus, capable of providing a positive impact in the swift efforts to deter threats to the uniqueness of Bali.

Abstract

This article attempts to review some understanding of key concepts related to political and religious authority in the Bugis people of South Sulawesi, particularly since the 20th century, such as arung (nobility), topanrita (scholar) and anregurutta (Islamic scholar). After analyzing the shift in the meaning of these concepts, this article seeks to trace the relationship between traditional authorities (white) with topanrita figure that, in the traditional sense, synonymous with the concept of intellectuals in modern society. After pointing out the meaning of the concept of transition topanrita so much represents the traditional ulama in Bugis society, the article concluded, among other factors of golden era of kingdoms Bugis-Makassar in the past is because of the critical relationship between political authority and symbiotic (arung) and socio-religious (anregurutta or topanrita) in these kingdoms.

Abstract

This paper is a reflection of the local defense of the religion that had been marginalized by looking further into the state of the local religious marginalization. In its development, the country never abandoned the religion of his intervention. In fact, very close to the state religion. How and through what medium the conquest of the local religion? This question is the focus of this paper by outlining the three sub-themes. First, it is form or variety of ideas in local religious position. Second, the actors involved in local religious positioning. Third, local response, including the existence of local religious elite, associated with differences in religion and culture of the surrounding community. This paper shows that the state has put religion at the ‘manageble’ position. In fact, the position of religion as an important entity is frequently controlled. Similarly, in this paper, it can be found how local communities respond to the presence of local religious so local religion not only placed in the controlled set, but also constantly challenged by the surrounding environment.

Abstract

Islam has significantly influenced the change and way of life of the people of Tolaki in Kunawe, Southeast Sulawesi. The Tolaki’s way of life can be traced within folklore which stil transmitted from generation to generation. Analysis of the folklore, such as, Langgai Moriana Ndotongano Wonua dan I Sandima, revealed that since Islam came to this region, there has constantly been shifting within society, both in terms of concept and daily life of the Tolaki peoples. It is mentioned, for example, in the Langgai Moriana Ndotongano Wonua, that Islam has changed the belief of Sangia to Allah. Also, Islam influenced almost all traditions of Tolaki, marriage, human relation, environment, social relation and stratification. In other folklore, I sandima, the change also took place in the area from animism to Islam and relation between the Tolaki people and their nature. Since the coming of Islam in ‘Negeri para Sangia’, it is inherently coming into daily lives of Tolaki community.

Abstract

Aceh that well-known as “Mecca Verandah” has produced the ulemas with the great works. Aceh’s ulema considered as the first who wrote tafseer (Quranic interpretation) ini Malay language in South East Asia. The tafseer was composed by Abdurrauf al-Singkili. There were still many tafseer books written Aceh’s ulemas need to be explored. This paper will explained several of them and their unique substance. That is important to be mentioned that the ulemas wrote the tafseers in a book, part of the books, article, even mixed with other field of knowledge. The writer will also focuses on method and type of tafseer as Aceh’s ulama works. The creativity of ulemas can be traced through their books of tafseer such “Turjumunul Mustafid, an-Nur, Al-Qur’anul Karim dan Terjemah Bebas Bersajak dalam Bahasa Aceh” etc. These tafseers generally had been written based on tahlili method. Meanwhile the type of tafseer that used consisted of fiqhi, sufi and also ‘ilmi.

Abstract

This paper discusses how Islamic religious movements in relation to social conflict in the lives of people in Indonesia khsususnya Makassar, with menggacu in the case of the non-Islamist movements such as the Ahmadiyah congregation maisntream and An-Nadzir. A group of local religious activity can trigger social conflict which considered deviant religious teachings of the dominant religion. Of social conflict, can lead to violence on the grounds of blasphemy, which is triggered by the presence of the social activities of religious communities or followers of certain religious ideas are somewhat different or perceived menyempal (non-mainstream) of the religion practiced in general (mainstream) in the life of Indonesian society. Conflict is often the case in Indonesia in recent years often contain a complex load. Arguably, political charged presumably still dominant influence, in addition to the problems and feelings suppressed disappointment so far.

Abstract

This article explores the old beliefs of Bugis and Makassar peoples. The old beliefs which still exist and are preserved within community until nowadays. In the concept of god, for example, the terms of “Dewata SeuwwaE” (Bugis) and “Tau ri A’rana” (Makaasar) still can be heard and believed. In the daily lifes, the influence of local beliefs cover rituals such “mappangre galung” (farmer) and “maccera tasi” (fishermen) still conducted in the community. This article also evaluates the old beliefs of South Sulawesi peoples, both before and after the coming of Islam. Also these religions’ influences in the daily lives are highlighted. A dynamic dialogue between the local religions and Islam becomes the core of this paper.

Abstract

This paper explores the ritual of molonthalo, a Gorontalonese traditional ceremony. The molonthalo is performed regarding with the seventh or eighth of pregnancy. This ritual is aimed of express thankful and an expression ‘endowment’ searching by a person or group within the community who believe that there is a Supremy Being in their lives. This study uses an ethnography which is combined with socio-cultural, fenomenology, and normative. It has been found that the molonthalo ritual classied into ‘urf shahih dan ‘urf fasid. It is indicated that there is a relation between this ritual and Islamic tradition. Also there are a number of elements within the ritual are not compatible with the Islamic values. Therefore, a contructive reconstruct-totion to this tradition should be evaluated---that is aimed to Allah centris. Too, this tradition is initiated to prevent community from irrational magic, myths and animism.
