Abstract

Oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) are by-products of the processing of oil palm mills. The addition of nitrogen-fixing microorganisms is carried out to improve nitrogen content in OPEFB compost and it can be used as a growing medium to increase the quality of vegetable crops. The aim of this study is to analyse the potential of empty fruit bunch composts enriched with Azotobacter for improving pak choi (Brassica rapa v. chinensis) growth. The process involved the conversion of OPEFB by fortifying it with Azotobacter into value-added composts. Temperature, pH, conductivity, and nutrient characteristics of composts were analyzed during the composting process. The Completely Randomized Design was conducted to observe the potential of Azotobacter-fortified composts on pak choi growth. The growing media made in seven combinations, namely: F0: 100% soil (control); T1P1: 30% OPEFB composts + 70% soil; T1P2: 50% OPEFB composts + 50% soil; T1P3: 70% OPEFB composts + 30% soil; T2P1: 28% OPEFB composts + 2% Azotobacter sp. + 70% soil; T2P2: 48% OPEFB composts + 2% Azotobacter sp. + 50% soil; T2P3: 68% OPEFB composts + 2% Azotobacter sp. + 30% soil. The research revealed that the highest pH and conductivity values are 8.46 and 1.16 mS.cm-1, which occurred in Azotobacter assisted OPEFB composting. In the application of the compost as the growing media for pak choi, the morphological parameter showed significant effects. The Azotobacer assisted compost promoted significant increase in plant height (23,7 cm), root dry weight (2,84 g), shoot dry weight (2,39 g), root length (28,56 cm), leaf area (73,37 cm2), and number of stomata (36,70 cm-1).

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the supply chain management of CPO in Kuantan Singingi a stream of goods (goods flow), the flow of money (money flow) and the flow of information (information flow), and knowing factors that affect the smoothness of the CPO supply chain. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. This study uses primary data and secondary data. Primary data is in the form of data obtained from the company, interviews with stakeholders (farmers, the Department of Agriculture, Association of Indonesian oil palm farmers and other parties), who are involved either directly or indirectly in the CPO supply chain in the company, while secondary data is in the form of journals and other documents. The flow of goods in the CPO supply chain consists of suppliers, including independent smallholders and smallholders who sell FFB to collectors. These company nuclei are directly brought to the palm oil mill. Then the factory processes the FFB into CPO and is sent to several companies that process derivative products. The financial flow starts from consumers to farmers in cash and non-cash. The flow of information begins from farmers to consumers who provide information in FFB selling prices and CPO prices. Transportation is one factor affecting the smooth supply chain of CPO in Kuantan Singingi District.

Abstract

The gel found in okra fruit is a long-chain hydrocolloid polysaccharide which can be used as a stabilizer in edible films. Previous study showed that addition of cmc and glyserol 0.50% : 0.75% in edible film based on okra fruit gel resulted 24.83 MPa of tensile strength and moderate elongation (18.09%). Meanwhile, cmc is used to improve the tensile strength and elongation of edible film and glycerol as a plasticizer. So it need to reformulate between cmc and glycerol by increasing its concentration. The aim of this research is to access the characteristic of edible films based on okra fruit gel due to the increase of cmc and glycerol concentration more than 1%, in order to produce edible films characteristic that meet standards. The results showed that the treatment of cmc 3% and glycerol 1.5% produced edible films that met the standards with 0.17 mm of thickness, 31.62 % of solubility, 1.07 A546/mm of transparency, 19.56 MPa of tensile strength, and 3.31 g/m2/h of WVTR. More over, the elongation in this treatment obtained up to 186%. Thus, the edible film of this treatment has great potential as an alternative to food packaging

Abstract

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L) is a sucrose-producing plantation that has been cultivated in various countries. Genetically modified sugar cane sugar cane plants are sugar cane plants that are assembled biotechnology through overexpression of the SoSPS1 gene. The SoSPS1 gene is responsible for the biosynthesis of sucrose sugar in leaves. Waste in the form of leaves, shoots, and bagasse has not been used optimally as animal feed. Thus it takes a lot of innovation and appropriate technology in the use of sugarcane waste for animal feed, so that it is expected to achieve zero waste farming systems that can be utilized all without being wasted and polluting the environment. As an alternative feed for livestock, then genetically engineered sugar cane must be tested for feed safety. Feed safety testing includes substantial equivalence value and feed digestibility test in which genetically engineered products have nutritional and digestive values commensurate with conventional products. Substantial value of sugarcane planted by genetically engineered overexpression of SoSPS1 gene did not differ significantly compared to conventional sugarcane. However, there are some significant nutritional content, but these values are still in the range of values in the OECD.
