Abstract

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Learners tend to produce their speech or written production as they are associated with what they see and what they hear. So, they are able and desired to give comment spontaneously after watching and listening to them. Producing written language can, as a matter of fact, be detected from learners’ fluency, accuracy and complexity. This article endeavors to elaborate written language production done by university students by using English subtitled videos. Two intact groups were assigned to accomplish two different tasks; that is, one group watched the video with subtitle and the other one without subtitle. The result of the study reveals that learners who carry out the tasks of watching video with subtitle improve their ability in written production in terms of fluency and accuracy regardless to complexity.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigating the textual organization and content of US dissertations. The 30 dissertations written by native speaker in the area of teaching are chosen randomly. To come to the conclusion, three steps in analyzing the data are implemented: (1) completing the checklist to identify the content and the order of abstract, (2) calculating the percentage of each abstract element; (3) classifying the finding into three big categorizations, and (4) analyzing the finding. We discover the following findings: (1) the organization of US dissertation abstract follow the linear order of thinking though the content is varied, and (2) there is the essential, less essential, and the non essential components in US abstract dissertation.

Abstract

The discourse, constructed by television as one of the mass media, is capable of directing the life of the nation through the news report program broadcasted. TVONE news report presents the same topic about the tragedy in Sidoarjo mud using their perspectives. By relying on the choice of words, the texts makers may intentionally lead public opinion to follow their understanding and “mission”. TVONE constantly uses phrases Sidoarjo mud. If one watches the same news text at TVONE over and over again, then she/he might assume that the tragedy of the mud in Sidoarjo Indonesia is a natural disaster and it has nothing to do with PT Lapindo or the Bakrie family. There is always a hidden message on any news program broadcasted by tvOne. TVONE and PT Lapindo belong to a same person, Aburizal Bakrie. He is the candidate of Indonesian president in the next presidential election. The objective of the study was to know the ideology of the news text of TVONE. This study employed a qualitative descriptive study using the model of Fairclough’s CDA. The data of the study was the news text about politics. Based on the research findings, regarding to the ideology contained in the news texts of Indonesian TVONE, then it can be concluded that TVONE does not only provide the information about the events in Indonesia, but it also develops an ideology. The ideologies are: 1) Sidoarjo mudflow is a natural disaster, 2) the cause of the mudflow is earthquake of Jogyakarta Indonesia, 3) the government and PT Lapindo are responsible for the mudflow handling and its impacts, 4) the mudflow victims got a new house and a better life, 5) the mudflow victims performs a prayer to commemorate the mudflow tragedy, and 6) Mudflow handling responsibilities have been carried out by PT Lapindo very well. The finding of this study reveals that Indonesia TVONE develops the ideology by applying the strategies: 1) Emphasize our good things and 2) De-emphasize our bad things.

Abstract

Abstract Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa kelas lima di SDN Kembangringgit I dalam berkomunikasi secara lisan dengan menggunakan bahasa Inggris melalui pengaplikasian Communicative Language Teaching approach yang merupakan pendekatan dalam pengajaran yang menekankan pada peningkatan kemampuan dalam berkomunikasi. Penelitian ini berbentuk Classroom Action Research yang diimplementasikan dalam empat tahap yaitu perencanaan, implementasi, observasi, dan refleksi. Ada beberapa instrumen yang digunakan  dalam mengumpulkan data, antara lain interview, observasi, dan spoken test. Semua data yang terkumpul akan dianalisa dalam bentuk qualitative dan quantitative. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan berkomunikasi secara lisan pada anak- anak, motivasi belajar mereka meningkat. Murid- murid lebih antusias berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan speaking. Kata Kunci: Communicative Language Teaching, Improving, Speaking Proficiency.

Abstract

みんなの 日本語 初級1(Minna no nihongo Shkyuu 1) salah satu media pembelajaran bahasa Jepang yang dipergunakan oleh masyakat pembelajar bahasa Jepang tingkat dasar pada hampir seluruh perguruan tinggi di Indonesia. Buku tersebut menggambarkan pola kehidupan masyarakat Jepang yang tercermin dalam materi percakapan pada masin-masin bab. Ada 25 bab dalam buku tersebut yang mencerminkan pola komnikasi sehari-hari antara orang asing yang baru datang atau tinggal di Jepang. Ada beberapa tema dalam buku tersebut yang diuraikan dalam beberapa tema. Tema yang paling banyak adalah tema “bertanya”. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa orang Jepang selalu menjaga perasaan orang yang diajak berkomunikasi. Hal ini sesuai dengan nilai-nilai 気持( perasaan) dan おもいより(pertimbangan). Selanjutnya nilai-nilai budaya Jepang Jepang yang paling sering digambarkan pada buku teks みんなの 日本語 初級1 adalah kontak pribadi. Untuk pola tindak tutur yang paling sering digambarkan pada buku みんなの 日本語 初級1(Minna no Nihongo Shokyuu 1) adalah ilokusi direktif. Hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa orang Jepang kalau ingin memohon ataupun memerintah pada seseorang dilakukan secara tersirat atau tidak langsung. Hal ini sejalan dengan konsep yang dimilik oleh orang Jepang yang disampaikan oleh Saronto (2005; 41) bahwa, dalam berkomunikasi orang Jepang sangat berhati-hati dengan tujuan untuk menghindari konflik dan selalu menjaga perasaan lawan tutur.

Abstract

This paper is constructed based on the research about the effect of the English camp program to the students’ interest on learning English. English Camp is also known as ‘Kampung Inggris’. This research is held in Islamic Senior High School (Madrasah Aliyah) Al-Itihad Poncokusumo Malang, East Java. English kampong is the term adapted from the program famously- exist in Pare Kediri, East Java. Look at the big intention of people in East Java on following English short course in Pare, then became an inspirational system to the researcher on adapting the system but in different method that; English Camp is held in school. Therefore, with the method students will be easily increase their language competence by following English Camp in their school without hard effort. On this research will be explained some research result in-correlation to the English Camp held in M.A Al-Itihad Poncokusumo Malang and its effects to the students’ interest on following English Camp program. The method used is the descriptive-correlation, that is the method by which the researcher explain the fact found and measure its correlation to the variables on the research. The result of this research shows that English Camp impact positively and extensively to increase the students’ language competence. The most prominent indication is shown from the students’ big interest on learning English. From the data analysis by Pearson Product Moment method and followed by T-test, we got a fact that English Camp could give effect up to 80% to increase the students’ learning English interest which it will be automatically improve their language competence.

Abstract

Di antara banyaknya nilai-nilai tradisional Jepang yang berakar dari budaya luhur mereka, terdapat beberapa hal yang menarik untuk dipelajari seperti konsep chu, ko, giri, ninjou, gimu, dan on. Nilai-nilai itulah yang kemudian dianggap sebagai ciri khas atau identitas bangsa Jepang. Sebuah identitas yang membangun bangsa Jepang sehingga menjadi bangsa besar seperti sekarang ini. Nilai-nilai tersebut tidak hanya tercermin dalam kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat Jepang, namun juga dalam wujud karya seni. Salah satu contohnya adalah novel “Kisah 47 Ronin” karya John Allyn. Novel ini adalah jenis novel fiksi sejarah yang ditulis berdasarkan peristiwa yang pernah terjadi di Jepang pada tahun 1703, dimana empat puluh tujuh ronin yang dipimpin oleh Oishi kuranosuke Yoshitaka menyerang rumah kediaman pejabat tinggi istana Kira Kozuke no Suke Yoshihisa guna membalas dendam kematian majikan mereka yang bernama Asano Takumi no Kami. Salah satu budaya Jepang yang akan dibahas dalam penelitian ini adalah budaya on dan giri yang tercermin dalam bahasa didalam karya novel Kisah 47 Ronin karya John Allyn. On adalah nilai-nilai penting yang harus dipertahankan di dalam kehidupan masyarakat Jepang yang berkaitan dengan adanya jaringan hubungan kewajiban yang saling timbal balik. Karena adanya rasa berhutang budi, maka orang Jepang merasa berkewajiban untuk membalas budi baik kepada orang tua, penguasa, masyarakat, dan negara. Giri adalah hutang yang harus dibayar atau dilunasi dengan perhitungan yang pasti atas suatu kebajikan yang telah diterima oleh seseorang dan kebajikan itu harus dibayar yang mempunyai batas waktu tertentu.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui proses implementasi Metode Role Play untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa Sastra Inggris Universitas Kanjuruhan Malang. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dengan menggunakan tiga instrument penelitian, yaitu Lembar Pengamatan, Dokumentasi, dan Tes. Hasil penelitian yang dilakukan dalam dua siklus ini menunjukkan bahwa Metode Role Play ini tidak hanya mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa tapi juga partisipasi aktif mahasiswa selama proses belajar mengajar berlangsung.

Abstract

At this moment traditional songs was not pay attention so that almost the traditional song is not well known by young generations. The position of traditional songs was lost with technology. If there is not an conservation and appreciation for traditional songs especially Madura traditional songs, so the traditional song can be lost in the future so that writer try to analysis of moral and educational values on Madura folk songs. The discussion in this thesis the author tried to review the pedagogical values particularly with regard to the morality contained in the lyrics of Madura folk song. The author only took eight songs contained in a book of poetry titled Madura folk songs "set song Madura Regions" in 2003 by the author R. Amirudin Tjitraprawira Namely; “Lir Saalir”, “Tondu’ Majang”, “Pajjhar Langgu”, “Caca Aghuna”, “Pa’-Opa’ Iliing”, “Pacakang Alako”, “Entar Akarang”, “Les Balesan”. The research was conducted with the following statement of problems: (1) What are moral and educational values found on Madura folk song by R. Tjitraprawira? (2) How is the meaning of Madurese life which is contained in the Madura song lyric? (3) What are the messages that can be delivered to the reader on Madura folk song by R.Amiruddin Tjitraprawira? The objective of this study was to know moral value found on madura folk song, to know how the meaning of madurese life which is contained in the madura song lyric,to know the message that can be delivered to the reader of madura folk song by R.Amiruddin Tjitraprawira. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative approach in finding moral and educational values. The research method is used from the researcher itself because for analysis the data use interpretation of own words. The data is taken eight titles from Madura songs such as “Lir Saalir”, “Tondu’ Majang”, “Pajjhar Langgu”, “Caca Aghuna”, “Pa’-Opa’ Iliing”, “Pacakang Alako”, “Entar Akarang”, “Les Balesan”. The researcher choose this titles because it contains the high valuable meaning related Madura daily activities which is designed in madurese language. Finally, this study uses semantic as the base theory which related on moral and educational values. Therefore, the researcher suggests to the next researcher whom want concern with the similar topic to analyze moral and educational values should be attention the theory which accordance with the research object itself and look for references that can be found in journal, newspaper, and books, etc.

Abstract

Hombo Batu is formed because in ancient times there was a war between villages. So that every village had to find a way to defend their village, one of which they did was to close each of their villages, ranging from bamboo which were made sharp as a spear as a form of defense. However, chiefs were also looking for the soldiers, who asked the youngsters to jump over the fence ranging from 4 meters, but because it was too high chieftain change the height to 2 meters so that the young people were able to jump over the fence then the commander will make them as soldiers. At the time, the form of the fence was also different, not like bamboo, but from stones that have been arranged as high as 2 meters. This study aims to analyze the original meaning of Hombo Batu culture itself, so that people know the true meaning in Hombo Batu culture. Researcher has some research problems, there are: the meaning of Hombo Batu culture, the functions of Hombo Batu culture, the factors which affect of the shifting in Hombo Batu culture, the effort of Bawomatoluo population to maintain the Hombo Batu culture. Data collection is done by field notes and interviews of heads of tribes, stone jumpers, and the people in the Bawomataluo village, to obtain the desired data. The data are taken from data in Hombo Batu culture, to analyze data the researcher use using triangulation method. In this study the researcher will use data triangulation and methodological triangulation. Methodological triangulation which refers to the use of more than one method for gathering data. Output obtained in the form of grouping the opinion of the society that shows whether it is the original meaning in Hombo Batu culture or not. The researchers concluded that the true meaning of Hombo Batu is as establishment of warriors to defend their villages, is not a requirement to get married. However, because this time the war between villages is no longer there, then Hombo Batu become one of the tourist places can be visited by anyone and from anywhere.
