Such strong growth of Islamic Puritanism in Indonesia , as he furthered, is playing an important role of the spread of Islamic radical ideology. pluralism would be pushed aside by the conservative Islamic scholars and ulamas in Indonesia, included in Muhammadiyah and NU themselves.  Muhammadiyah and NU,  the two Islamic bastions for pluralism and tolerance, have been facing  strong pressure from of puritant Islamists and fundamentalists who advocate ‘’transnational Islam’’ for the ummah. Abstract

A Study of heretics related to hadith naration is interesting, because hadith is a source of Islamic law which should be flawles. Besides, it had been a topic of discussion among muslim scholars (ulama). We can even find the heretics in shahih al-Bukhari dan shahih Muslim. Significance to discuss this topic is due to the polemic of the term it self. The polemic can be seen from the meaning of “ahl al-ahwa wa al-bida’ “ which  is negatif connotation. The historical Reality tells us that the muslim scholars have always been in neutral position to appraise the narration of hadith from those accused heretics. They are divided in two categories: the first is the infidels and the consequence is the unacceptability of their narration of hadith. The second category is the sinners. The narration of the sinners falls under two classifications; they are propagandist (da’iyah) and nonpropagandist (ghairu da’iyah). The first group’s narration is unacceptable which the second group’s narration depends on the individual credibility of the narrator.

Abstract

The spirit of Islam has taught all mankind to always provide a quality service. As God reveals in the Qur'an, in chapter al-Baqarah verse 267, the leading edge bureaucrats should serve and treat people with righteousness and without favoritism, just as if they treat their own selves. Among the substantial aspects required to accomplish better public service and quality is the attitude and behavior of these front-line bureaucrats. In this article, the author refers to the nature of the Prophet Muhammad to serve as an uswatun hasanah (good example) in attitude and behavior when providing services to the public. The Prophet has genuine characters of siddiq, amanah, tabligh, dan fathonah. These four noble qualities have majorly influenced his behavior so as to always perform praiseworthy characters and behavior towards fellow creatures. More specifically especially upon his people, he would serve without any distinctions or discrimination in terms of social status, skin color, ethnicity or class.

Abstract

This article addresses the flexibility of shariah in human life. This is based on the assumption that Shariah cannot offer solution toward human affairs. It is also to counter argument that shariah is merely fit to prophethood situation. Consequently, shariah was believed as monotonovs and exlusive.  This also leads to assume that Islam has no ability to solve Islamic affairs in the current context. In other words, Shariah is irrelevant in dealing with time and situation. Based on qualitative methodology, the author shows a number of elements on shariah which prove the ability of Shariah to solve human life affairs. The author, in this sense, lists qiyas, istihsan, and istislah as the means of generating product of Islamic law. In short, this article discusses shariah from different perpective focusing on Islamic jurisprudence. The author eventually come to conclude that there are many dimensions of shariah which illustrate that shariah can deal with the time as well as situation

Abstract

Deeply rooted traditions have accumulated the understanding of Islamic thought which, to some extent, brings about some misconduct in contemporary Islamic practices. To this regard, Arkoun, among other Muslim scholars, offers technical suggestions in reading the Qur’an.  This research explores Arkoun’s ideas related to the study of the Qur'an by looking at the aspect of Arabic as the language of the book with a semiotic perspective.   This article shows that Arkoun proposes a method of comprehending the value of the Qur’an through deconstruction techniques. Moreover, Arabic literature has solidly developed a biblical strength on the basis of the language itself, and this potential will be enhanced when combined with semiotics. Reading through the framework of the signified and signifiers in a semiotic study will encourage appreciation of text reading. In this light, Arkoun argues on the significance of assessment tools within the border of Islamic studies. Consequently, along the composition of his ideas, modern knowledge such as philosophy, anthropology, and other applied linguistics are implemented as an integrated part of Islamic studies. At the end, a comprehensive reinforcement of knowledge will open up the possibility to obtain a new horizon or a broad view in Islamic intellectuality.

Abstract

Abstract

This article elaborates the concept of salvation based on Islam and Chatolic. It is clearly stated that both religios define salvation as happiness, escaped from the danger, perfect condition, and healthy life. Generally speaking, the main focus of this article is how do Islam and Chatolic describes the epistemology of salvation. The author found that God has already explained the concept of salvation either on Quran or al-Kitab. Both holy books clearly stated that no god except the One. In other words, these religios generated an understanding of the concept of monotheism. At least, as contended by the author, there are two different approaches to see the concept of salvation. Firstly, esoteric approach, this concentrates on how religions can be seen internally as well as substantively. To put simply, religions tend to get same direction, namely one God. Secondly, exoteric approach, religions may be approached through different ways of worship. Religion followers look different on doing worship, but, basically, they go on the same direction.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamic relationship between Islam and local tradition in Indonesia with special reference to Java and Sulawesi. Based on historical and anthropological sources, the article seeks to understand variety of interpretation and application of Islam among local Muslims within their particular context. With this aim, the article tries to examines the intricate process of religious change as world religion interacts with local forces. The article argues that since the “localization” of Islam was continuing nature in the expansion of Islam beyond the Arab homeland, the same development in Southeast Asia can be expected. By focusing on the frameworks of ‘practical Islam’ rather than ‘normative Islam’ and both accommodation and conflict between shari’ah and adat as a whole system, rather than as separate entities, the article found a common feature of Islam as it is interpreted and applied by local Muslims in Java and Sulawesi. In this two region, Islam became the dominant force but did not completely obliterate the indigenous beliefs and practices. Despite this common feature, Javanese people have been more diverse than Sulawesi people in terms of religious spectrum particularly due to the fact that animism, Hindu-Buddhism, and Islam have been incorporated into Javanese cultural system.
