Abstract

This article speaks of the dynamics of the Nahdlatul Wathan Pesantren by analyzing its spiritual, social and cultural capitals. The complex nature of the relationship between one capital and another and how this relationship has become the source of the physical and academic development, is in itself an interesting issue to explore. But the Pesantren is not only the product of this relationship. It is also the product of the system that its leaders have built. The paper tries to analyze these dynamics and the changes it has gone through by employing the social, capital and educational theories. To arrive at the objective conclusion, the paper treats the Pesantren as a social system in which triadic relationship between structure, ideology, and culture is found. As a social system, the Pesantren has also to consider the external forces which it is certainly part of. But it is exactly here that the Pesantren—and any social system in that matter—will find itself in a serious dilemma. How the Pesantren will deal with the external forces will be also the issue that the paper is interested to discuss, albeit briefly.

Abstract

The basic argument that this paper tries to prove is that, education can be counter-productive to the most important value of humanity if it is run inappropriately. Given that value can be produced—in this modern time—by telecommunication and information technology, education cannot turn a blind eye on it. By implication, education cannot ignore modernity. It is this problem that this paper is concerned with. The paper is interested in discussing the idea of transformative education by relating it to many sources and factors of transformation. Modernity is certainly one of those. The paper—borrowing UNESCO—understands education as simply the learning to know, the learning to do, to be, and to live together. Consequently, education is all about adapting oneself to the environment in which he/she lives. It is in this context that education cannot escape modernity, for modernity has become the very part of human life and environment. And it is only through modernity—this paper argues—that education can be meaningful at least in democratic terms.

Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to portray Islam as a paradigm of higher religious education. This paper is a result of a long research initially aimed at finding new perspective on the development of teaching and learning process in Indonesia. The paper finds that the Holy Qur’ân is ample with references on education at all level. It is actually a book of education. The history of Islam has shown that the system, method, and materials of education in the Islamic world are all derived from it. It is this that the paper is interested to discuss. In doing so, it takes into account the conventional distinction between the religious and natural science as far as education is concerned. While the Qur’ân does not make a clear-cut distinction between the two sciences, the difference between the two does serve as a meaningful entry—at least methodologically—into the world of education. The paper goes on to classify some Islamic universities in Indonesia along the line of this distinction. It finds that some of these universities believe in this distinction, while others do not. This belief will in turn shape the way these universities design their vision and carry on their mission.

Abstract

The verse lâ ikrâh fî al-dîn has been one of the most contested verses with regard to its meaning and definition by the ‘ulama (religious scholars) from the past to the present. Basing on this verse, progressive ‘ulama maintain that the idea of freedom of religion introduced by modern society does not contradict the Qur’ân. For them, freedom of religion includes not only freedom to convert to Islam, but also freedom to convert from Islam. This view is rejected by conservative ‘ulama who argue that the meaning of the verse contains only freedom to convert to Islam, not to convert from Islam. If non-Muslims are free to convert to Islam, Muslims are not allowed to convert from Islam. Moreover, there are many ‘ulama who argue that the verse has been abrogated by other tens of verses which enjoin to fight against infidels and polytheists. After the revelation of ‘verses of war’ in the Qur’ân, the verse lâ ikrâh fî al-dîn becomes no longer legally binding.

Abstract

There is no doubt that the problem of environment has become the most formidable issue faced by human being in the modern history. The danger imposed by the environmental crisis is much greater than the danger of any forms of war. This crisis has thus become the greatest enemy of humanity. The level and extent of the danger requires equally a great effort to address and tackle it. It is here that this paper tries to contribute. It attempts to offer an Islamic perspective of environment and its conservation. The paper is convinced that Islam is rich with perspectives on this issue. It therefore, introduces the many theories and views on environment that the sciences of Islam have spoken about. It brings into discussion the view of the science of theology (kalam), jurisprudence (fiqh) and sufism  (tasawuf) on environment. Each of these sciences is discussed in relation to the others, as well as in the context of what the paper calls fiqh lingkungan (the jurisprudence of environment). The idea that underlines the paper is thatthese sciences are—generally speaking—concerned with the idea of personal and collective responsibility; an idea that already has a direct relevance to the problem of environment.

Abstract

Many argued that the NU discourse concerning the idea of endowment is rather static and textual. This can be seen particularly from the so-called Bahth al-Masâ’il, the discussion forum being held regularly by the NU to address various legal issues faced by the community. The forum often comes to no veil. Since 1998 however, the younger generation of the NU initiated the idea of reading the classical thought in contextual terms. This paper addresses this issue by mapping out the typology of NU thinking particularly regarding the notion of endowment. This typology is drawn up from the Bahth al-Masâ’il being held from 1926-2006, and found that there are at least four types of thinking within the organization. First, the restrictivetextual thinking, which looks at the issue of endowment by referring to the Shafi‘ite classical works; second, the electivetextual thinking, which tends to select the most preferable view on a particular issue of endowment; and third, progressive-contextual thinking, which tends to employ the method of collective ijtihâd. The paper discusses these three variants by explaining their characteristics and development.

Abstract

This research focuses on the problem of information technology-based teaching activities by teachers of Islamic education in the regent of Sidoarjo. The research concludes that the learning activity on the subject of Islamic education is very much conventional where teachers play the major role in acquiring knowledge, while students were not involved. The research also discovers that teachers do have good teaching qualifications given that they meet 12 out of 16 competences criterion set by the national standard authority on the subject. But they on the other hand, are weak in terms of pedagogic qualification considering that they meet only 12 to 17 out of 42 competences. The research finds that the ability and skill of the teachers in using technology such as computer, laptop, LCD and internet are among the main factors behind their competencies. Teachers of SMAN 1 in Krian, and SMKN 2 in Buduran are among those who are familiar with the information technology system. Meanwhile, the poor infrastructure and limited availability of information technology in such schools as SMAN in Tarik, SMAN 2 in Sidoarjo and Porong are the main factors that hamper the process of developing the teaching standard.

Abstract

The object of this paper is man in the modern Islamic literature. The man that it deals with is a modern man, a man overwhelmed by psychological deceases ranging from loneliness, sadness, depression, and the likes. The paper maintains first and foremost that modernity has brought about a serious challenge for modern man. The high standard of living, the demands of life, and the competition among individuals have all been a source for the deepening malaises of the modern man. All this, the paper argues has been reflected in the contemporary Islamic literature whose vibrant expression of modern life has stood a strong indication of the plight of modern man. Contemporary Islamic literature in other words, is the medium through which we can understand the dilemma of modern man as well as the medium through which modern men can resort to express their feeling and live-experience. By Islamic literature we mean any literature that has an ontic and epistemic relationship with the authoritative sources of Islam.

Abstract

The study is aimed at exploring the Qur’anic concept of education. It argues that the Qur’an mostly speaks of education in terms of character-building and tries to inculcate noble values upon human being in such a way that the good characters may be attained. Hence, the paper is of an argument that the Qur’anic concept of education is ethical; it imposes ethical values upon human being. But the aspect of ethics that the paper will be speaking is that which has to do with ethics in social interaction. The paper will look at some key terms that the Qur’an uses to infer to this social interaction which include qaulan sadida, qaulan ma’rufa, qaulan baligha, qaulan masysura, qaulan karima, and qaulan layyina. To offer a better explanation of what social interaction is all about, the paper will address and invoke some social setting in which people interact one another. In other words, the argument of the paper will be invalidated by the social facts found on the ground. This study is thus both normative and empirical.

Abstract

The word Diaspora has been understood as the dissemination of certain group of people -notably the Jewish and Chinese- to other country or land while keeping in touch culturally with the country of their origin. This paper discusses this notion of Diaspora in the case of Muslims by relating it to the problems of identity, gender and terrorism. The paper asks whether Muslim migration to other countries is a form of shame or honor both for Muslims themselves and for the country of their destination. The three key issues that we raise will be used as both indicators and framework within which the notion of Muslim self-esteem is investigated. The underlining view that highlights the whole argument of the paper is that a great majority of Muslims in Diaspora has not been able to associate culturally with the country of destination, hence creating a tension with the local culture.
