Abstract

The minimization of weld distortion has become an important subject of research in welding. Severe distortion can cause undesirable influence on the cost of fabrication since additional work or repair needs to be performed. In addition, distortion also reduce dimensional accuracy and even loss of structural integrity. The present investigation aims to reduce welding distortion on A36 steel by controlling heat input during Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding. The welding process was carried out by maintaining constant voltage and current of 23 Volt and 145 Ampere respectively whereas travel speed was varied in the range of 3.9 to 4.9 mm/s giving heat input of 678 to 936 J/mm. Result of this investigation showed that the welding distortion was achieved at the heat input of 756 J/mm. At this heat input, the percentage of acicular ferrite is maximized resulting in good weld impact toughness.

Abstract

Quenching is a cooling method of heat treatment for metal hardening. Quenching refers to the process of rapidly cooling metal parts from the austenitizing or solution treating temperature, typically from within the range of 815 to 970 °C for steel. The selection of a quenchant medium depends on the hardenability of the particular alloy, the section thickness and shape involved, and the cooling rates to achieve the desired microstructure. The liquid quenchants of oil is commonly used in industrial manufacture. But, oil is not environmental. The aim of this research research is to find new quenchant for change oil as quenchant to more environmental. Gel aloe vera is purposed for it. The material used in this study is AISI 1045 steel. Cooling curve and cooling rate is measured by finite element model, ANSYS APDL 14.5. True experimental is done to view microstructure and measure hardness of steel. Simulation result shown that gel aloe vera has almost similar cooling curve and cooling rate with oil. Microstructure result of steel for gel aloe vera as quenchant is martensite in surface, bainite in center, and pearlite in between surface and center. Hardness number of steel for gel aloe vera as quenchant is 189.63 HVN in surface, 182.566 HVN in center, and 162.866 HVN in between surface and center. By simulation and true experimental analisys concluded that gel aloe vera has opportunities to change oil as quenchant for hardening process.

Abstract

There were two kinds of monsoon winds in Indonesia. They are the east and the west monsoon winds. Both of them blow alternately in a year through the Indonesian territory. The velocity and energy of monsoon winds in Indonesian territorial sea were mapped by using MatLab program. The velocity and energy data were obtained by using QuikSCAT satellite from January 1999 until December 2009, meanwhile WindSat from January 2004 until December 2014. The results show that high energy of monsoon winds start from Indian oceans until Nusa Tenggara sea, then from Arafuru sea to Banda sea, Java sea, Karimata strait and the southern region of south Sulawesi.

Abstract

The needs of clean water is especially increased for the living in coastal. Because of that, a simple equipment and low cost operation is needed. Distillation is a method to convert sea water to fresh water by using solar energy. Various research on absorbent plate solar still has been done to increase productivity and efficiency of distillation. In the study, fins absorbent plate was tested with iron ore grain size variation of 0,125 cm, 0,250 cm and flat absorbent plate with iron ore grain size variation of 0,125 cm. The volume of salt water in the basin is also varied of 1, 2, and 4 liters. The results shown that the fin absorbent plate with iron ore size of 0.125 cm and the volume of 1 liter have the highest freshwater productivity and efficiency of 3,7 l/m day and53,55%, respectively. The daily sun radiation of 16,071 MJ/m .day. The quality of resulted fresh water has fulfilled the standard for drinking water, hence it is consumable.

Abstract

There are many tribometers especially friction test to make a research and to develop many kind of materials. Three types of tribometer that common to use for friction test are thrustwasher, block on ring, and pin on disk. In this study, Alumunium and Steel ST 40 was used to investigate the wearness value. The load used in the pin is 24,81 kg/mm². The result showed that Aluminium have higher wearness value than Steel ST 40.

Abstract

The main problem of electric vehicles are slow and expensive compared to conventional car. Because of that, it needs electrical motor that had the good performance and high efficiency. Brushless DC motor is the best electric motor. In this study, two brushless DC motor called Golden Motor Magic Pie 5 and Mitsuba M1048R was compared. Golden Motor Magic Pie 5 has lower efficiency of 78% compare to Mitsuba M1048R efficiency of 92%. However, the price Mitsuba M1048R 140 million is higher than Golden Motor Magic Pie 5.

Abstract

Deflection is one of criteria in designing a construction. Analysis can be conducted by using several method and to obtain the more accurate result the process can be conducted by using a computer program. For comparison to evaluate the accurate of the analysis, a deflection test was conducted with a deflection test device.The exact analysis was conducted by using the three moment methods. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of the lay out of load along the beam towards deflection. The deflection along the beam varied according on the load and its position. The deflection obtained for brass is 1,29 x 10-3 m, while for alluminium and steel are 1,25 x 10-3 m and 4,87 x 10-4 m, respectively.

Abstract

Study on biomaterials is recently essential for rapid development of medical application and Zr54Al17Co29 BMGbecomes promising candidate due to the lack of toxic elements. Partial crystallization by isothermal annealing at SCL region was used to variate the crystallinities of BMG. The structural and thermal properties of as cast and partially crystallized samples were confirmed by XRD and DSC test, while microvickers and compression test were further utilized to investigate their mechanical properties. By the higher crystallinity, the hardness could be slightly increased in range 540 ± 5 to 575 ± 5 Hv. As-cast sample shows the yield strength and plastic strain of 2130 ± 75 MPa and 2.2 ± 1.6%. The yield strength is increased by the presence of 10% nanocrystal, afterwards, fall and raise phenomena are obtained with further crystallinity. However, with higher crystallinity, the plasticity is significantly degraded and no more plastic strain observed at sample with 50% of crystallinity. Both the presence of nanocrystalline phase and free volume annihilation are the reason of mechanical properties change on the Zr-based BMG.

Abstract

Some previous studies used QFD first phase method to obtain customer satisfaction of coconut milk squeezer machines, as follows: accelerates extortion process, reduces fatigue, easy to use, optimizes the output, strong construction, rustproof materials, compact design, easy to move, and hygienic. Study developing of the squeezer machine of coconut milk is required to deploy customer satisfaction into two parts including specifications and critical parts by using QFD second phase. There are 15 part specifications that obtained by discussing and interviewing with the experts. Then, 4 part specifications such as motor, pressing mechanism, production step, pressing strength, and volume of the cylinder were selected as main part to be used for QFD second phase. While there were 10 critical parts was derived from selected part specification such as pressure strength, hydraulic system, ON/OFF push button, cylinder clamps, the power and voltage that used for the machine,  the piston holder material, and its diameter.

Abstract

The fiber composite of hibiscus's bark is the material that comprises synthetic resin as a matrix and hibiscus's bast fiber as reinforcement. The hibiscus's bast fiber have the excellent potency regarding the strength that is employed as reinforcement. Four types of synthetic resin were used in this study, polyester BTQN 157, bisphenol A LP-1Q-EX, ripoxy R-802, and epoxy. The ratio of mass fractions between fiber and resin was 60:40. The initial treatment of the bast fiber hibiscus was immersed in 6 % of NaOH solution for two hours. The composites were manufactured through vacuum bagging process. Tensile strength and fracture mode of composites were investigated. The fiber composites of hibiscus tree bark with bisphenol A LP-1Q-EX resin has the best tensile strength and epoxy resin have a small fracture area was obtained.
