Abstract

Mastitis means inflammation of the udder and is a common disease among dairy cows worldwide. It is subdivided into clinical mastitis and subclinical mastitis, both influence milk quality and quantity, and mastitis is therefore of major economic concern for the farmer. The incidence rate of mastitis varies between herds and depends on the exposure to pathogens, environmental and management factors and the immune status of the cow. Mastitis is associated with release of free radicals, increased total oxidant capacity and decreased total antioxidants capacity in milk. Vitamin C, E, , α tocopherol, A, β-karoten and trace mineral (Cu, Zn, and Se) feeding, as an antioxidant, in dairy cows have shown appreciable protective effects by reducing the incidence of mastitis. The purpose of this review is to discuss the role of Vitamins C, E, α tocopherol, A, β-carotene, Cu, Zn, and Se in the incidence of mastitis.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of zonation in closed house on ammonia levels and its impact on broiler chicken quality in the rainy season. The research was held in closed house, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Agriculture, Diponegoro University. Three hundred and sixty broilers were divided into 24 groups (4 treatment, 6 placement groups of broiler): T1 (Zone 1, at the inlet position of the cage), T2 (Zone 2; ¼ of the length of the cage), T3 (Zone 3; ½ from the length of the cage ); T4 (Zone 4; ¾ of the length of the cage). During the study of ammonia levels, the temperature, humidity, and wind velocity inside and outside the cage were taken to obtain an overview of several factors that contribute to ammonia levels. The parameters observed were water holding capacity, pH, color, moisture content, fat content, and protein content. Water holding capacity and the color of the upper thigh meat increased significantly in the zone near the outlet (p <0.05), but the water holding capacity and the color of the lower thighs and breast meat did not increase (p> 0.05) in the zone near the outlet, but it has a darker meat color on the zone near the outlet. The pH did not show any significant difference (p> 0.05) in the zone near the outlet. Water content followed by fat content of breast meat showed no significant difference (p> 0.05) due to zoning. Breast protein content significantly increased (p <0.05) in the zone near the outlet. It was concluded that placement in the zone near outlet had impact on the increase of water holding capacity, color, and protein content. Nevertheless, an increase in meat protein in the zone near the outlet is not followed by increased meat protein mass.

Abstract

Betaine is a methyl group donor that can increase protein synthesis since it has a similar role as methionine. The study was performed to determine the supplementation effect of betaine in the diet containing adequate methionine on growth performance and feed efficiency of female broilers. In total, 200 of day-old chicks of female broiler chickens were allotted to 4 treatments with 5 replicationsof 10 birds. This experiment was designed as completely randomized design. Control diet was formulated to contain adequate methionine (0.50% for starter and 0.38% for finisher period). The other dietary treatments were obtained by supplementing 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.3% betaine. The variables observed consisted of feed, protein and energy consumption, average daily weight gain, feed efficiency, protein and energy efficiency ratio. Supplementation of 0.1% betaine generated a higheraverage daily weight gain (P<0.05), but supplementation at higher levels (0.2 and 0.3%) had no effect on weight gain. However, betaine did not affect feed, energy and protein consumption, as well as feed efficiency and energy and protein efficiency ratio. Thus, betaine can be applied in the diet containing adequate methionine at the level of 0.1% to produce higherdaily weight gain without affecting feed efficiency. Supplementation of betaine at higher levels than 0.1% did not show positive effect on weight gain and feed efficiency in female broiler chickens.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of giving Garlic and Allium sativum (TUKBP) Flour as feed additives on various levels of feeding in feed consumption, Hen Day Production (HDP), egg mass, feed conversion and Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC) in laying hens. A total of 320 laying hens strain Isa Brown produced by PT. Charoen Pokphand aged 30 weeks, divided into 8 treatments and 4 replications each replication using 10 chickens. The experimental design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Eight treatment groups were as follows: basal feed + 0% TUKBP as negative control feed (P0), basal feed + virginiamycin antibiotic 0.015% as positive control (P1), and basal feed + TUKBP 0.25% (P2), 0, 50% (P3), 0.75% (P4), 1.00% (P5), 1.25% (P6) and 1.50% (P7). Data were analyzed using ANOVA test, if there were significant differences between treatments continued with Duncan's Multiple Range test. The results showed that feed with the addition of TUKBP can improve the appearance of laying hens, although it has not matched the feed with the addition of antibiotics. The use of TUKBP to the level of 1.50% in feed does not cause negative effects for laying hens. Administration of TUKBP at 1.00% level (P5) is able to replace synthetic antibiotics or as organic additive feeds in laying chicken feed.

Abstract

Artificial Insemination (AI) is a technique that is widely used by farmers to improve the genetic quality of livestock. This method can be increased in value by using sexing semen that can regulate and produce the sex of the offspring as expected. The purpose of this study was to determine the success of AI by using frozen sexing semen on Ongole Crossbred cows in Malang Regency. The materials used were 98 Ongole crossbred cows in traditional farm of Malang Regency especially in Pakis, Tumpang, Jabung and Singosari Districts. The method used was a field experiment with two treatments: 49 cows were inseminated by using frozen sexing semen (P1) and 49 cows were inseminated by using non sexing semen (P0). The variables observed were the Non-Return Rate (NRR) value observedin 3 estrous cycle after AI and CR value based on pregnancy observation at 8 months of pregnancy. Data were analyzed descriptively and continued with a one-proportion z-test. The datashowed that the CR value on P1; P0 were 55.10% and 65, 31% respectively.furthemore, the NRR value on P1 from NRR1 to NRR3 were 87,76%, 73,47% and 67,35%, while on P0 95,92%, 83,67% and 75,51% respectively. It can be conclude thatCR and NRR value of sexing semenwas lower than non sexing semen, however sexing semen can be applied for certain purposes such as producing offspring as expected

Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the in vitro ruminal fermentability of supplementation of Gliricidia sepium, Moringa oleifera, Lamk (MOL), Ceiba pentandra and Paraserianthes falcataria leaf meal in concentrate feed to be tested on sheep. This research with the experimental methods was arranged in Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 6 treatments and 3 groups. The treatment feed tested consisted of concentrate without leaves and concentrate with leaf meal supplementation. Crude protein content (CP) concentrates were prepared 16%, 18% and 20%. Supplementation uses a mixture of Gliricidia sepium, MOL, Ceiba pentandra and Paraserianthes falcataria leaf meal in concentrate feed (1: 1: 1: 1) as much as 10%, 20% and 30%. The measured variables were  degradation of dry matter (DDM) and degradation of organic matter (DOM), gas production rate, microbial biomass and NH3 concentration. The use of mixed leaf meal in concentrate feed resulted in in vitro DDM as well as concentrate feed without leaf meal supplementation. Supplementation of leaf meal in concentrate feed as much as 30% with CP 20% resulted in a decrease in the value of fermentability. The supplementation of leaf meal in concentrate feed as much as 20% in concentrate feed with CP 18% produced the best fermentability value. Suggested for in-vivo trials on sheep using 18% protein concentrate feed by utilizing Gliricidia sepium, MOL, Ceiba pentandra and Paraserianthes falcataria leaf meal in concentrate feed as cheap protein sources.
