Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the levels of free fatty acids and carboxymethylcellulase activity (cmc-ase) activity of some protected fat-proteins base on in vitro Tilley and Terry method. Two sources of fat, i.e. crude palm oil and fish oil and three sources of protein i.e. skim milk, soybean flour and soybean meal were used in the formulation of protected fat-protein, and thus there were six treatment combinations. The filtrate from the in vitro test was analyzed for the levels of free fatty acids and  cmcase activity. The result of this research indicates that different combinations of feed materials and fat give different content of free fatty acid in first stage and second stage in vitro, with the best results in the combination treatment of skim milk and palm oil that give the lowest result of  free fatty acid concentration in fisrt stage in vitro (0.168%) and the highest result free fatty acid concentration in second stage in vitro ( 4.312%) . The activity of CMC-ase was not influenced by different  sources of fat and protein. It can be concluded was that the protection of the combination between skim milk and CPO gives the highest protection results.

Abstract

Artificial insemination (AI) in cattle using Ongole Cross Breed liquid semen with cauda epidydymal plasma-2 (CEP-2) diluent+0.6% Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) aimed to improve the genetic quality of livestock with high sperm motility on beef cows. Addition of BSA as extracellular cryoprotectant to support egg yolk function to prevent membrane damage caused by cold shock during cold storage. This research was conducted in Tumpang, Pakis, and Singosari Sub-district, Malang Regency using 38 cows that inseminated using frozen semen of Limousine and Simmental breeds as control (19 cows) and liquid semen with CEP-2 + 0.6% BSA as a treatment (19 cows). The reproductive parameters were Non Return Rate (NRR), Service per Conception (S/C) and Conception Rate (CR). Data were analyzed descriptively and continued by chi-square test. The results showed that insemination using frozen and liquid semen did not affect the success rate of AI in beef cows. The NRR43-63 value of frozen was 89.40% and liquid semen was 78.94%; the CR value of frozen semen was 84.21% and liquid semen was 57.89%; and the S/C value of frozen semen was 1.21 and liquid semen was 1.42. The conclusions of the study were the values of NRR43-63, CR and S/C of frozen higher than liquidsemen.

Abstract

Eleven strains of Lactobacillus plantarum have been evaluated for their growth rate and ability to reduce pH during corn ensiling. Ensiling was carried out in small scale using plastic bag for 14 days. Soluble carbohydrate consumption, organic acids production and pH reduction were measured during fermentation. The growth rate of each strain was also determined in liquid medium. All of the 11 strains of L. plantarum tested were able to improve the ensiling process. However, strains T-16, T-25 and S-98 grew in liquid medium faster than the others, and were able to reduce pH of silage quicker than the other strains. The pH of silage inoculated with strain T-16, T-25 and S-98 decreased from about 5.60 to 4.23, 4.45 and 4.40, respectively,  in two days, and to 3.98, 4.05 and 4.03, respectively, after 14 days fermentation. The acetic acid content of silages inoculated with those strains was low. Strains T-16 and T-25 were suitable as potential silage inoculants and their characteristics were comparable to the one isolated from a commercial silage inoculant.ABSTRAKSebelas galur Lactobacillus plantarum telah dievaluasi laju pertumbuhan dan kemampuannya dalam menurunkan pH selama fermentasi pada pembuatan silase jagung. Fermentasi dilakukan pada skala kecil menggunakan kantong plastik selama 14 hari dan diamati konsumsi karbohidrat terlarut, produksi asam organik, dan penurunan pH-nya selama fer- mentasi. Masing-masing galur juga dilihat laju petumbuhan selnya dalam medium cair. Meskipun kesebelas galur yang diuji mampu memperbaiki proses pembuatan silase, akan tetapi galur T-16, T-25 dan S-98 tumbuh paling cepat dalam medium cair dan mampu menurunkan pH silase paling cepat dibanding galur lain. Setelah difermentasi selama 2 hari pH silase yang diinokulasi dengan galur T-16, T-25 dan S-98 turun dari sekitar 5,60 menjadi berturut-turut 4,23, 4,45 dan 4,40 dan pH silase setelah 14 hari mencapai berturut-turut 3,98, 4,05 dan 4,03. Kadar asam asetat pada silase yang diinokulasi dengan ketiga galur tersebut juga tergolong rendah. Galur T-16 dan T-25 berpotensi sebagai inokulum untuk pembuatan silase dan kemampuannya setara dengan galur yang diisolasi dari inokulum silase komersial.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to observe the effects of sun-bathing on the Ongole Crossbred cattle’s comfort and performances. Eight heads of 1.5–2 years aged Ongole crossbreed bulls were divided into two groups. All of cattle were white in color. The first group was sun-bathed at 07.00–11.00 am. The second group (control) was raised in the barn whole day. The experiment was held for 90 days. The data collected were environmental conditions (air temperature and humidity, wind speed, and light intensity), physiological conditions, behaviors, feed intake, digestibility, average daily gain and feed conversion. The data was analyzed by student-t test. The result showed that there were no significant differences on humidity, win speed, and light intensity in both places at 07.00–11.00 am. The temperature on the sunbathing place at 09.00 am. was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that in the barn. The pulse rate on the second group was higher (P<0.01) than the first group. There were no significant differences of rectal temperature and respiration frequency on both groups. There were no significant differences behaviors except ruminating duration of the first group was longer (P<0.01). There were no significant differences on feed intake,digestibility, average daily gain, and feed conversion on both groups. It was concluded that sun-bathing gave comfortable environment for cattle, but did not affect on the cattle’s performance.(Key words: Cattle, Sun-bathing, Comfort, Performance)

Abstract

Penelitian dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh konsentrasi formaldehid pada pembuatan undegraded protein (UDP) yang digunakan untuk mensuplementasi pelet pakan lengkap terhadap aktivitas mikrobia rumen secara in vitro. Hasil sisa tanaman pertanian dan hasil samping pengolahannya digunakan untuk menyusun pelet pakan lengkap yang mengandung 12% protein kasar (PK) dan 62% total digestible nutrients (TDN). Cairan rumen untuk percobaan in vitro kecernaan bahan kering (KcBK) dan kecernaan bahan organik (KcBO) dan in vitro produksi gas diambil dari 2 ekor sapi Peranakan Ongole betina umur 2–3 tahun yang difistula pada bagian rumennya. Konsentrasi formaldehid 0; 0,5; 1,0; 1,5; dan 2,0% (volume/berat) digunakan untuk memproteksi bungkil kedelai pada pembuatan UDP, masing-masing adalah K-0, K-0,5, K-1,0, K-1,5, dan K-2,0. Tingkat proteksi bungkil kedelai diuji pada sampel UDP terhadap degradasibahan kering dan organik secara in vitro. Selanjutnya UDP yang paling baik digunakan untuk mensuplementasi pelet pakan lengkap. Aktivitas mikrobia rumen dari berbagai tingkat suplementasi UDP 0; 2,5; 5,0; 7,5; dan 10% bahan kering (berat/berat) pada pelet pakan lengkap berturut-turut adalah S-0, S-2,5, S-5,0, S-7,5, dan S-10,0 diuji secara in vitro produksi gas meliputi: produksi gas, sintesis protein mikrobia, produksi dan proporsi asam lemak volatil. Data hasil penelitian dianalisis variansi menurut Rancangan Acak Lengkap pola searah. Beda antar rerata diuji dengan Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan KcBK (%) bungkil kedelai tidak diproteksi K-0 lebih tinggi (P<0,05) dibanding K-0,5, dan K-0,5 lebih tinggi (P<0,05) dibanding K-1,0, K-1,5 dan K-2,0. KcBO bungkil kedelai tidak diproteksi lebih tinggi (P<0,05) dibanding K-0,5, dan K-0,5 lebih tinggi (P<0,05) dibanding K-1,0, K-1,5, dan K-2,0. Perbedaan tingkat suplementasi tidak mempengaruhi produksi gas antar perlakuan pada S-0, S-2,5, S-5,0, S-7,5 danS-10. Sintesis protein mikrobia mg/ml cairan rumen tidak berbeda pada suplementasi UDP S-0, S-2,5, S-5,0, dan S-7,5, namun S-10 lebih rendah (P<0,05) 0,273 mg/ml. Tingkat suplementasi UDP tidak mempengaruhi konsentrasi asam lemak volatil total (mmol). Proporsi asam asetat S-0 lebih rendah (P<0,05) dibanding S-5,0 dan S-7,5, tetapi proporsi asam propionat S-0 lebih tinggi (P<0,05) dibanding S-5,0, S-7,5, dan S-10,0. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan formaldehid pada tingkat 1% lebih baik dalam pembuatan UDP. Tingkat suplementasi UDP pada pelet pakan lengkap sampai 7,5% tanpa mempengaruhi aktivitas mikrobia rumen.(Kata kunci: Pelet pakan lengkap, Konsentrasi formaldehid, Undegraded protein, Tingkat suplementasi, Aktivitasmikrobia rumen)

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine growth performance of SO beef catlle fed rice straw added with concentrate with different levels of RUP, RUP used was soybean meal protected with 0.8% formaldehyde. Thirty six SO bull were divided into two groups at random, group that fed low and high RUP. Feed in the form of rice straw and concentrate with a ratio of 30:70 in dry matter (DM). Cattle fed low RUP get concentrate containing DM 91.22%, crude protein (CP) 19.38%, RUP 33.05%, and TDN 51.71%, whereas cattle fed high RUP get a concentrate with DM 91.13%, CP 19.40%, RUP 41.13%, and TDN 51.57%. Water was given unlimited. The nutrient intake and growth performance parameters analyzed using independent sample t-test, average daily gain was analyzed by ANCOVA with initial body weight as covariates. Intake RDP and RUP had significant effect (P<0.05) between cattle fed low and high RUP. Nutrient intake (DM, CP, TDN) and growth performance (average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion, feed cost per gain) showed not significant between cattle fed low and high RUP. The conclusion were the increased of RUP levels could improved growth performance of SO beff cattle.

Abstract

This study was aimed to formulate strategies for increasing adoption innovation in the smallholder dairy farms. The study was conducted in May to July 2015. The research was conducted using survey method. The selection of respondents was conducted using multi-stage sampling to 270 dairy smallholder farmers in Yogyakarta Region, Central, and East Java Provinces. The method used was descriptive qualitative by using SWOT analysis (strength, weakness, opportunity and threat). The results of the research which is to optimize resources; provide a clear and continuous information about innovation; facilitate access to information by extending the dissemination of information; provide mentoring programs, counseling, and training with a demonstration of the innovation; increase the participation of dairy farmers; strengthen institutional dairy farmers; seek a tool to support innovation together; improve the quality of extension, media, and the delivery of information; and optimize government and NGO aid.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to observe the reproductive performances of Sumba Ongole (SO) cows inseminated with frozen Belgian Blue (BB) semen. This research was expected to be used as a reference in the cow’s maintenance, especially in the implementation of Artificial Insemination (AI), as well as for subsequent studies. Parameter of this study includes the signs of estrus symptoms, S/C ratio, CR, NRR, and pregnancy time. The results showed a large value of S/C for cow SO 2.60±1.81, great value for cattle CR SO was 40%, the value of NRR was 60%, and the pregnancy time SO was 273.80±4.08. It is concluded that reproductive performance of SO cows are good, using SO cows to cross with BB cow is possible to do.
