Abstract

Background: Most tertiary education students commonly share motivations to achieve better. However, higher education life, particularly when taking medicine program, is typically more demanding and more competitive, leading some students to experience depression symptoms during this period. Depression can adversely influence students’ achievement motivation. Methods: This was an analytical observational study using cross-sectional approach, conducted in December 2012 at Faculty of Medicine, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. Ninety medical students at 3rd semester were selected as samples using non-random purposive sampling method, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Depression scores were measured by Beck Depression Inventory, whereas achievement motivation scores were measured by McClelland achievement motivation questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed by Spearman’s correlation test. Results: Depression scores showed normal distribution (p<0,001), but achievement motivation scores were not normally distributed (p=0,063). Result from the Spearman’s correlation test showed a ρ coefficient of -0,113 (p=0,287). Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between depression and achievement motivation among 3th semester medical students at Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. Abstract

Background: There are 5 types of lecture available in PBL learning method model in Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sebelas Maret, namely: (1) introductory lecture, (2) supporting lecture, (3) final lecture, (4) workshops, and (5) courses. Supporting lecture is defined as lectures of subjects which are required to be understood by students, but not yet covered in tutorials, practical laboratory works, skills lab, or field lab. The present study aims to determine the relationship between given supporting lecture and the attainment of learning objectives which are designed as the implementation as the competency standard which has to be achieved by medical students. Method: The present study was an experimental quotient study, conducted by pretest posttest with control group. Obtained samples were divided into 2 groups, namely: group A and group B. Pretest was conducted on both groups, before group A had not received the supporting lecture. While, posttest was conducted on both groups, when group A had receveived the supprting lecture. Collected data was analyzed by using McNemar test and processed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences 20 ( SPSS 20 ) for Windows Release and p < 0.05 indicated signification. Result: The highest learning objectives attainment increase was seen on group A by 52%, while on group B was 4%. McNemar test showed there is a statistically significant difference on group A with p = 0.000 (p < 0.05) and no significant difference on group B with p = 0.05. Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between given supporting lecture and the attainment one of Learning Objectives of Hematology which is only able to be fulfilled by supporting lecture in students of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta. Abstract

Background: Learning system in university has been transformed from Teacher Centered Learning (TCL) to Student Centered Learning (SCL). In medical education, SCL systems applied by the Problem Based Learning (PBL) method. Learning objectives in tutorial group discussion which is the implementation of PBL method in Sebelas Maret University Faculty of Medicine reflect the National Standard of Competence of Indonesian Medical Doctor that must be achieved by every medical student in Indonesia. As a new program at Sebelas Maret University Faculty of Medicine, tutorial group discussion’s roles in ushering students to achieve learning objectives is still in doubt. Until now, there has been no research on the effectiveness of a tutorial discussion on Sebelas Maret University Faculty of Medicine therefore authors are interested in doing this research. Methods: This research is an observational analysis research by cross sectional study approaching. The sample of this research is medical student of Sebelas Maret University Medical Faculty who are undergoing Hematology Block. Sample is taken by cluster sampling method, 43 persons randomly taken from 5 tutorial group of discussion. The chosen sample asked to undergo a pretest before first meeting of tutorial group discussion of Hematology Block. After the second meeting, sample then asked to undergo a posttest. The sample’s point results of pretest and posttest then compared and analyzed with McNemar method. Results: The percentage of learning objectives achievement from pretest is 7,00% and the percentage from posttest is 37,20%. McNemar test shown significant difference with p=0,000 (p<0,05). Conclusion: Tutorial group discussion is related with the achievement of learning objectives in Hematology Block. Keywords: tutorial group discussion, learning objectives, problem based learning

Abstract

Background: The assistance lecture program was a part of practicum activity, a part of medical education’s curriculum that led to achieve Indonesian’s doctor competence. All this time, the assistance lecture program was held outside the regular lecture schedule, usually in the morning. Some party felt that morning assistance lecture was a burden for them.  Then a policy was made to put morning assistance lecture into regular college schedule, especially at the afternoon. The other party felt that afternoon assistance was ineffective because student already had a full schedule from morning till afternoon. Student may feel tired when accepting the afternoon assistance lecture program. This research aimed to compare the effectiveness between morning assistance lecture and afternoon assistance lecture. Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental research with pretest and posttest group design study approach. This research was making an intervention to samples without samples randomization. The intervention that made is researcher performing both morning and afternoon assistance lecture program to samples. Samples of this research were medical students of Sebelas Maret University Faculty of Medicine class of 2012. Samples were taken by rule of thumb method and then samples divided by morning group and afternoon group. The number of samples was 30 persons from each group and all of them undergo pretest and posttest that contain pharmacology subject lesson. Then the result of sample’s pretest and posttest points compared and analyzed with unpaired T-test method. Results: Morning assistance lecture group had a mean value 0.43, bigger than afternoon assistance lecture group that only had mean value 0.40. Those were shown from the T test results with p=0.103 (p>0.05) which means there were no significant difference of pharmacology points between morning assistance lecture group and afternoon assistance lecture group. Conclusion: Based on independent T test analysis, there are no significant difference of pharmacology points between morning assistance lecture group and afternoon assistance lecture group. Abstract

Background: Student activity point system is a measurement system for student activities which is obtained when student participates in a non-academic activity. Student activity is also a founding way and a supervision method towards student activities in Sebelas Maret University. This research aims to determine the relationship between student’s time management skills with the achievement of student activities’ point system. Methods: Research design in this study using an observational analytic design with the type of cross-sectional study. The sample was the entire medical student class of 2011 who meet the criteria numbered 179 students. Data collection for time management questionnaire was taken in November 2014 using Time Management Self Assessment questionnaire from Fleet & Raume while the data of student activities’ point system was taken from Medical Student Executive Board of University of Sebelas Maret Surakarta. The data processed with Kolmogorov Smirnov and Spearman’s rho test using a Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) 17.00 for Windows software. Results:. The result of spearman’s rho correlation test showed the value of correlation coefficient is -0.001 and p-value 0.985. Conclusions: student activity point system and the ability of time management did not have a significant relationship Keywords: SPKK, time management, student activity, student activity unit

Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is estimated occured in 25% of women and about 90% occur in adolescence. Risk factors that affecting dysmenorrhea is age, nutritional status, ancestry, exercise habits, and others. Nutritional status is a matter that affects health. a less or more nutritional status has an impact on menstrual disorders including dysmenorrhea. This study aims to determine the nutritional status of the relationship with the incidence of dysmenorrhea in women of childbearing age. Methods: This study is an analytic observational study with cross-sectional approach. The samples was chosen by purposive sampling. The number of sample consist of 57 childbearing-age women who divided into 30 women with dysmenorrheal and 27 women with no dysmenorrheal. The study location taken place on linguistic and cultural department university of Sebelas Maret Surakarta. This study held on August 2014. The data were collected by direct interview and fulfilling dysmenorrheal questionnaire. The data study then being analyzed by using chi square test by using Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) 17.00 for Windows. Result: The results of data analysis using chi-square technique, its obtained p = 0.031. Bivariate analysis of the relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of dysmenorrhea in women of childbearing age showed a significant relationship. Conclusion: There is a relationship between nutritional status and the number of dysmenorrheal on childbearing-age women.. Keywords: Menstruation, Dysmenorrhea, Nutritional Status

Abstract

Background: Learning environment is everything that happened in the class, departement, faculty or university that plays a very important role in effective student learning. Students’ perception of the learning environment is also found to influence their behaviour. Student participation in problem-based learning (PBL) curricula leads to use of Self Directed Learning (SDL) skills. SDL, which is a prerequisite for life-long learning can flourishin certain learning environments. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between students’ perception of learning environment and self directed learning readiness in the Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret Universtity. Method: This study was an observational analytic study with cross sectional method approach among 106 medical students of Sebelas Maret University that selected by Systematic Random Sampling method. This research used DREEM (Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure) that measured the students’ perception of learning environment and SDLRS that measured students’ self directed learning readiness. Data analysis used Pearson correlation (α = 0.05). Result: Pearson correlation test results a significant correlation between Students’ Perception of Learning Environment with Self Directed Learning Readiness in The Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University with p <0.05 (p = 0.000). The test results also showed a moderate correlation between two variables with a correlation coefficient (r) 0.551, with increased students’ perception of learning environment will increase self directed learning readiness in the Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University. Conclusion: There is a moderate relationship between Students’ Perception of Learning Environment and Self Directed Learning Readiness in The Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University. Abstract

Background: Tutorial discussion is one method of Problem Based Learning (PBL), this method divided students into small groups and then given a mdical case as a trigger to search further information, and they discuss knowledge and information that accompanied by a tutor. The success of the tutorial discussion process may affect the achievement of learning objectives block. The aim of the research is to determine differences in the achievement of learning objectives Immunology block scenarios before and after tutorial discussion. Methods: This research was a longitudinal observational analytic. The data were collected by using simple random sampling with 47 sampels of students batch 2013 and had been assessed at Medical Faculty of Sebelas Maret University. The learning objectives of this comparation study measured by pretest and posttest questions that have been tested validation by experts. The study was conducted using quantitative method and the results were analyzed by using Paired t-test. Results: The average value of pretest-posttest before and after tutorial discussion is 28.51-60.85 for the first scenario, 22.34-62.55 for the second scenario, and 16.81-65.32 for the third scenario. Paired t-test results showed significant differences with p <0.05 (p=0.000)  for the value of pretest-posttest three scenarios. Conclusions: The achievement of learning objectives scenario in immunology block before and after tutorial discussion is significant. Abstract

Background: Academic procrastination is an educational and psychological problem that has negative effects for students. One of the factors that influence academic procrastination is the existence of achievement motivation. Students who have a high achievement motivation level will be highly motivated to finish their homework immediately, increased their skills, and interested in challenges. This study aimed to determine the correlation between academic procrastination and achievement motivation level in Medical Student of Sebelas Maret University. Methods: This study was an observational study with cross sectional approach on October 2014 in Faculty of Medicine, Sebelas Maret University. Total sampling of 173 students were included in this study. The data were obtained using Suyatmi’s Achievement Motivation Scale (2002) and Ahmaini’s Academic Procrastination Scale. The obtained data was analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation through SPSS 20.00 for Windows. Results: This study showed the average score of achievement motivation level was 147±11.20, and the average score of academic procrastination was 84.06±11.86. Spearman’s rank correlation test showed Spearman’s correlation coefficient (r) about -0.540 with significance level = 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: There was a moderate negative correlation and statistically significant between academic procrastination and achievement motivation level in Medical Student of Sebelas Maret University. Abstract

Background: Anatomy is one of the basic field of study in faculty of medicine (basic medical sciences), who will become the basic of clinical studies. Anatomy learning process influenced by working memory capacity. Working memory have a very important effect in human mental development including cognitive ability, the ability of human to plan something, to find solution, and to understand new things. Working memory is one of the cognitive ability that influence the study achievement. Methods: This study was an observational analytic study with cross sectional approach thar held at October, 6th, 2014 at Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University with 61 respondents of third semester . The sampling was done by random sampling technique. The selection of sample done by checking the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this study sample. The amount of ample obtained statistically analyzed by using Pearson correlation test. Result: The result of Pearson correlation test  was found that there were a significant correlation between working memory capacity with Anatomy Point of Medical Studies Program Third Semester Student in Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University (p = 0.000) and the correlation between variables were moderate (r = 0.600) with positive direction of correlation. Conclusion: The correlation between working memory capacity and Anatomy Point of Medical Studies Program Faculty of Medicine Sebelas Maret University is significant.   Keywords: Working Memory Capacity, Anatomy Point
