Abstract

Introduction. This study, grounded in digital literacy theory, examines how students’ critical thinking abilities are shaped by digital competency and the use of generative AI in educational settings. The main objective is to determine how ChatGPT use and digital literacy together affect the development of critical thinking. The participants are the library and information science students, who are expected to demonstrate strong competencies in information technology and critical information evaluation. Research Methods. This study employed a correlational design involving 106 third-semester students from the 2024 cohort. Responses were obtained using a 1–5 Likert-scale questionnaire. Data Analysis. The data analysisinvolved multiple linear regression, Sobel mediation testing, and bootstrapping. Tests for validity, reliability, and classical assumptions were conducted, and heteroscedasticity was addressed using robust standard errors (HC3). Results. The results highlight that digital literacy and ChatGPT use collectively accounted for 62.2% of the variance in critical thinking skills. ChatGPT use was the strongest predictor (β = 0.535) and partially mediated the relationship between digital literacy and critical thinking (indirect effect = 0.342; 95% CI = 0.192–0.455). Conclusion. The study emphasized the importance of integrating digital literacy and ethical AI to enhance students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Introduction. School libraries and librarians’ images and stereotypes in various media have largely remained unchanged over time. This image can affect the use of the school library. This study aims to identify and explain the representation of school libraries and librarians, alongside the stereotypes of school librarians in one of Indonesia's popular films, Mariposa. Research Methods. Scenes were selected for observation and documentation to collect data on verbal and nonverbal element.. Data Analysis. The data were analyzed using Peirce’s triadic semiotic model, consisting of sign, object, and interpretant components which provides a systematic framework for elaborating how social perception and professional stereotypes are formed through representation. Results. The school library was depicted as a place where characters interacted and developed relationships. It also became a place for students to study independently and in groups. In addition to conducting duties as information professionals, school librarians play a supporting role in the students’ social relations as library patrons. Stereotypes persist aroundto school librarians focusing on appearance and professionalism. Mariposa films feature positive and negative depictions of school library and librarians. Conclusion. School library representation is depicted in positive light, while the portrayal of school librarian remains partly confined and persistent to the longstanding traditional stereotypes.

Abstract

Introduction. The closure of the Basirih landfill led to waste accumulation and the emergence of illegal dumpsites across Banjarmasin, where limited public access to policy information hindered effective waste management. This study examined how urban residents accessed information on waste management policy and how openness to information shaped behavioral change. Research Methods. A qualitative exploratory case study was employed, involving 15 informants from five affected districts. Data Analysis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and then analyzed thematically using the information grounds (IG) and diffusion of innovations (DOI) frameworks. Results. Findings showed that residents accessed information predominantly through informal spaces rather than formal channels such as village office briefings or neighborhood meetings. Information openness influenced behavioral change when messages were delivered by credible sources, easy to understand, and reinforced by visible local examples. Behavioral change remained constrained by the absence of technical guidance, digital literacy gaps, and limited infrastructure. Conclusion. In a waste management crisis, informal channels functioned as the primary information infrastructure through which formal policy was validated. The effectiveness of behavioral innovation diffusion depended on information openness and trust in local sources, not on the intensity of formal government outreach alone.

Abstract

Introduction. This study examines how DeafSpace principles, including color and lighting, can create equal educational opportunities for deaf library users. By examining fourth-floor reading room of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Library, the research addresses a significant gap in inclusive design literature that has given insufficient attention to visual elements as communication tools. The findings offer crucial insights for advancing disability rights and establishing inclusive library design standards that cater to all users. Research Methods. A practice-based research method with a three hybrid design framework approach was used to identify color and light concepts that enhance the self-sufficiency of deaf library users. Data Analysis. Data was collected through interviews and questionnaires using a Likert scale, with the findings analyzed descriptively. Results. This study shows that cool colors, particularly green, and evenly distributed lighting significantly enhance the emotional experience of deaf library users navigating these spaces independently. The implications for inclusive design are meaningful: libraries that thoughtfully apply appropriate color palettes and optimize lighting conditions create environments where deaf users can comfortably achieve their full academic potential and productivity. Conclusion. This research developed a conceptual design model for library reading spaces, optimizing color and lighting to enhance independence, accessibility, and support for deaf users in higher education.

Abstract

Introduction. Library coverage in digital media reflects public attention to library development. This study examines trends in library news coverage in national digital media focusing on volume, topics, library types, tone, geographic location, and photo usage. Research Methods. A quantitative descriptive approach with content analysis was applied to 511 news articles published by Detik.com, Kompas.com, Tribunnews.com, CNNIndonesia.com, and Liputan6.com from January 2023 to December 2024. The unit of analysis consisted of news articles focusing primarily on libraries. Data Analysis. The analysis focused on the content and context of library reporting. Results. The findings show that themes of services, literacy activities, and facility development dominated coverage. Public libraries appeared most frequently, while community and mobile libraries received limited attention. The overall tone was predominantly positive, with coverage concentrated in urban areas, particularly DKI Jakarta. Most articles included photos to reinforce visual messages. Conclusion. Digital media portrays libraries as progressive and relevant institutions, highlighting the need for more structured publication strategies and broader coverage to ensure balanced representation.

Abstract

Introduction. Pustaka Bisa is a collaborative initiative between the Library Service and PT Adaro Indonesia, implemented as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) scheme. However, based on field observations, the program’s impact on increasing residents’ economic capacity and literacy culture has remained limited. Research Methods. Using a qualitative descriptive method based on field research, data were collected through interviews with librarians, village managers, the Library Service, and PT Adaro Indonesia. Data Analysis. Interview and field data were analyzed to identify the implementation, challenges, and impacts of the social inclusion literacy program in Tabalong Regency. Results. The results of the analysis revealed that the program’s success still largely depended on one librarian with strong initiative. In addition, it is necessary to focus more on the role of other librarians. Focusing on the program’s sustainability, the results also showed that the lack of integration between library materials and training, weak post-training assistance, and limited synergy between agencies. Conclusion. This study concludes that it is essential to enhance librarian capacity, integrate literacy programs with local economic development, and establish collaborative policies among local governments, the private sector, and the central government.

Abstract

Introduction. The Museum of the Asian-African Conference, through its Literacy Festival, presents innovative library services that integrate educational, historical, and architectural elements into a unified visitor experience. This study aims to implement a literacy tourism development model that integrate architectural design and library services offering a new approach to strengthening immersive and contextual literacy learning. Research Methods. A qualitative case study approach was applied, with data collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation during the festival. Data Analysis. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data with several steps such as data reduction, categorization, and narrative interpretation to explore the interaction between space and services. Results. The narrative architectural design, featuring chronological spatial layouts, thematic lighting, and quotations from world figures, evoked emotional and cognitive responses from visitors. Library services including exhibitions, workshops, and book discussions encouraged cross-generational engagement and strengthened historical literacy. Conclusion. The integration of colonial architecture and participatory library services creates an immersive literacy tourism model that combines cognitive, emotional, and cultural learning. This study offers an interdisciplinary perspective that positions architecture as a narrative medium within library services, providing practical insights for libraries and museums in developing experience-based literacy programs.
