Abstract

Existing studies on Islamic religious authority have been focusing on its construction within Muslim communities and networks. This study offers a contrasting perspective, arguing that Islamic religious authority can be built within a network of different religions, which has been possible thanks to social media algorithms. This study adopts the concept of algorithmic authority coined by Clay Shirky, which is grounded on individuals based on their influence and digital footprint. This study employs Nethnography method to observe the online visibility of Ustadz Dennis Lim through non-Muslim influencers' podcasts. The findings show that Dennis’s presence in the podcasts has played a significant role in building his religious authority. The findings are reinforced by Google Trends data, which indicate an increase in Google searches related to Dennis, aligning with the release of these podcasts. Furthermore, interviews with Dennis, his media team, manager and offline congregants were conducted to understand their views on the podcasts. The interviews reveal that such podcasts do not always reflect the pluralist views of Indonesian Muslims. Rather, they engage with such content in the hope that their idolized non-Muslim influencers will eventually embrace Islam through repeated interactions with a Muslim preacher in the podcasts.

Abstract

The Islamic identity of Zilenial Muslims has undergone a significant transformation in the digital era, where spirituality is not only manifested through ritual practices but also expressed as part of an online lifestyle. This study aims to examine the relationship between digital literacy and the construction of Zilenial Islamic identity, employing UNESCO’s (2011) framework of access, evaluation, creation, and digital ethics. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-method approach, data were collected from one hundred respondents aged 18–25 through surveys and interviews. The findings indicate that almost all participants actively engage with social media for spiritual practices such as sharing Qur’anic reflections, short da’wah messages, and personal contemplations. Many respondents integrate Islamic fashion, lifestyle content, and religious self-branding as essential elements of their online presence. Nevertheless, only about half demonstrated strong critical evaluation skills in filtering Islamic information, while others remain vulnerable to misinformation and algorithmic influence. This study highlights that digital literacy plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance between spirituality and the online lifestyle of Zilenial Muslims.

Abstract

This article analyzes the negotiation practices and agency of Muslim migrant university students in Pekanbaru in response to Salafi power relations. Economic constraints drive many of these migrant students to reside in community-owned mosques, including those managed by groups adhering to Salafi ideology. Building upon this context, the study addresses a central question: how do Muslim migrant university students negotiate their positions and exercise agency when confronted with Salafi power relations in Pekanbaru? This research employs a qualitative method with a narrative approach, with data gathered through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that Muslim migrant university students residing in Salafi-managed mosques do not inherently adopt Salafi religious practices. Instead, they demonstrate the capacity to negotiate and express agency within specific contexts. This strategy enables them to pursue their educational goals while simultaneously securing welfare opportunities during their urban residency. Consequently, this article argues that restrictions on Salafi da’wah activities among Muslim university students are unnecessary, as these students possess the requisite negotiative capacity and agency to navigate such power relations.

Abstract

Productive Waqf, Religious Tourism, Central Java Grand Mosque, Islamics Economy, SWOT Analysis The development of religious tourism based on productive waqf funds can serve as an alternative solution to support the financial sustainability of religious tourism destinations in Indonesia. This study focuses on examining the productive waqf fund management system implemented at the Central Java Grand Mosque (MAJT), as well as formulating optimization strategies for productive waqf funds to enhance the potential of the religious tourism sector at MAJT. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method at the Banda Masjid Agung Semarang Waqf Nadzir Foundation. Data were collected through interviews, field observations, and document analysis. The findings indicate that MAJT has implemented an institutional-based productive waqf fund management system that is integrated, professional, and transparent. However, despite the transparent and professional management practices, several challenges remain, including limited funding capacity, role duality within the organizational structure, and suboptimal utilization of technology. To optimize waqf fund management, the recommended strategies include the development of a more standardized management model, the empowerment of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), diversification of religious tourism products, and the optimization of cash waqf and waqf-linked sukuk. This study is expected to contribute an integrative framework for enhancing the effectiveness of productive waqf management models in the Islamic tourism sector through strategic implementation aimed at promoting equitable and sustainable religious tourism development.

Abstract

This article aims to identify da’wah strategies in fostering religious moderation among students at MAN 2 Parepare through the strengthening of cooperation, assimilation, and acculturation skills. The approach used is action research, with data collection methods including Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), interviews, and observation. Data analysis was conducted using the Urgency, Seriousness, Growth (USG) approach. The research findings indicate that the Bil Hikmah (preaching with wisdom) and Tadarruj (gradual) methods received the highest scores at 4.88 points, highlighting an urgent need to strengthen these methods among teachers. In terms of student development, outbound activities proved to be an effective strategy. The ‘Blindfolded Maze’ outbound activity is prioritised to build students’ cooperation skills, whilst the ‘Cross-Cultural Cooking Day’ serves as the primary means to strengthen students’ assimilation. Furthermore, the ‘Cultural Exchange Simulation’ is recommended to enhance students’ acculturation skills, which contributes to the formation of a moderate religious character. These findings contribute to providing practical guidance for enhancing religious moderation through innovative da’wah approaches and outbound activities relevant to students’ needs. The implications of this research are the need to adopt and strengthen da’wah strategies based on real-world needs to foster a generation that is religiously moderate and capable of living amidst cultural diversity.
