Abstract

This study aims to analyze the management of Islamic boarding schools in implementing digital da'wah literacy based on religious moderation and gender relations. The research explores digital competence in formulating digital da'wah formulations in educational institutions and da'wah Islamic boarding schools. The research was conducted in several West Java Islamic boarding schools, which have modern characteristics, have digital da'wah activities, and are affiliated with leading Islamic community organizations such as NU, Muhammadiyah, and Islamic Unity. The research was conducted with a qualitative approach. Research data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The results of the study show that the process of developing digital competence in Islamic boarding schools based on moderation and gender relations is carried out through habituation, improvisation, and innovation of the fundamental values of justice, equality, connectedness, relation, tolerance, moderation, wisdom, harmony, and inclusiveness as the foundation for strengthening digital competence.  This is done through three stages. First, the stage of cultivating the students' values, knowledge, and skills is carried out through strengthening digital competence. Second, are the stages of fostering and assisting students in digital technology (digital usage). Third, the stages of controlling and supervising students in transforming digital technology (digital transformation) in a positive, innovative, emancipatory, and participatory manner.

Abstract

Conversion is not only observed as a theological change in someone’s belief and behavior, but  socio-cultural change that affects identity formation. This present study is conducted qualitatively involving ten Muslim converts who are associated with the white Western people. It aims at investigating their identity formulation on the process of becoming and being Muslims in the Western context in Australia, Sydney especially. Also, this research is to find the comparison between male and female converts’ identity formation. Results show that social challenge has the biggest part of the Muslim converts’ identity formation. Further, the study pictures different pattern of social challenges between male vs male and male vs female Muslim converts that leads to their identity formation. This study has highlighted that Muslim converts in the Western context have been challenged more by the socio-religious reality than faith-related practices. This study suggests that the Muslim community and the born Muslim family living in Australia are encouraged to set a program to address this tension.

Abstract

The effective management of zakat institutions depends significantly on the competence of amil zakat and their alignment with da'wah professionalism to fulfill religious and operational expectations. This study investigates the role of the Pusdiklat (Training and Education Center) and the LSP (Professional Certification Institution) in advancing da'wah professionalism and enhancing the competence of amil zakat in Indonesia. This paper adopts a qualitative approach. The research gathered data through in-depth interviews and document analysis from multiple zakat institutions partnered with Pusdiklat and LSP. Findings indicate that Pusdiklat's training programs have significantly improved amil zakat knowledge, skills, and attitudes while strengthening essential aspects of da'wah professionalism. Meanwhile, certification provided by LSP has facilitated the assessment and recognition of amil zakat professional competence, bolstered public trust in zakat institutions, and improved operational efficiency. However, challenges such as financial limitations, limited awareness about the importance of certification, and the need for enhanced collaboration among Pusdiklat, LSP, and zakat institutions were identified. In conclusion, this study finds that bolstering the competence of amil zakat through LSP holds substantial potential to elevate the performance and professionalism of zakat institutions in Indonesia.

Abstract

A positive initial perception is able to influence the acceptance of the da‘wah target towards the da‘wah efforts carried out. Islam advocates a variety of al-ta’līf approaches aimed at bringing the target of da‘wah closer to the teachings of Islam. However, in some situations, efforts to deliver da‘wah today are seen to ignore the aspects of al-ta’līf advocated by Islam. Neglecting the al-ta’līf approach in the implementation of da‘wah has been found to threaten the harmony in the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims, and even in certain situations, can scratch the image of Islam. This article aims to present the approaches of al-ta’līf in the implementation of da‘wah according to the Islamic perspective. Research data was obtained through documentation and content analysis methods. Findings found that the implementation of the al-ta’līf approach in da‘wah needs to be applied in actions, words and writing in line with the recommendations of Islam. This discovery is expected to be used as a guide in the implementation of da‘wah while upholding the image of Islam as the most perfect religion.

Abstract

This article examines the contestation of religious moderation discourse in da'wah on the YouTube Channels of Buya Syakur and Buya Yahya. Both are clerics from moderate Islamic mass organizations who are known to actively promote religious moderation. This research is a qualitative research with a cyber ethnography approach and text analysis based on Stephen Toulmin's argumentative rhetoric model. Toulmin's argumentative rhetoric combines Claim (C), Data/Ground (D), Warrant (W), Backing (B), Qualifier (Q) and Exception/Rebutta (R). The results of the study indicate that there are different views on the moderation of the concept and discourse of religious moderation and its implementation in national and state life. Buya Syakur discusses moderation as a necessity to create unity and brotherhood amidst the reality of religious and cultural plurality. He recommends a reinterpretation of religious texts. Unlike Buya Syakur, Buya Yahya states that Muslims do not actually need a religious moderation movement, because Islam is a religion that has moderate characteristics since its inception. Buya Yahya actually appealed to Muslims to be aware of the discourse and movement which he feared could damage the peace of Muslims themselves. The difference in views between Buya Syakur and Buya Yahya occurred due to differences in understanding several concepts in the Quran. The difference in views between the two shows the existence of contestation in the preaching of religious moderation. Contestation is commonplace in the digital space. However, this contestation actually enriches the discourse on religious moderation in Indonesia.

Abstract

Fishermen are generally stereotyped as a marginalized group characterized by poverty, low levels of education, lack of religious observance, engagement in superstitious rituals, extravagance, alcohol abuse, and other negative behaviors. However, in reality, fishing communities are both relatively prosperous and deeply religious. This study addresses the following research questions: What are the religious connotations associated with fishermen in Bendar Village? What is the reality of their religious practices? How are their religious practices perceived through the lens of Islamic preaching (da'wah)? The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The findings reveal that fishermen in Bendar Village, Pati Regency, Central Java Province, actively practice Islamic traditions such as Quranic recitation, tahlil, and manaqib. Additionally, they are industrious individuals, and many within their families have attained higher education, with several holding university degrees. This phenomenon implies that the religious practices of fishermen can be understood as a culturally grounded approach to Islamic preaching (da'wah), highlighting the integration of local traditions within the broader framework of religious dissemination.

Abstract

This research examines navigating polygamous family dynamics: family communication and mindset in an Islamic context using a mixed methods explanatory model. Quantitative data from respondents to measure the correlation and influence of family communication, family structure, and religious orientation on the resilience of polygamous families. In contrast, qualitative data from informants were used to analyze navigating polygamous family dynamics: family communication and mindset in an Islamic context which includes communication in building family meaning, relationship maintenance, and problem-solving in polygamous families. The results showed that the resilience of polygamous families can be maintained if family communication, family structure, and religious orientation used are in line with or well accepted by all family members. The calculated F value of 51.331> the F table value of 2.73 and the sig value is 0.01 <0.05 then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, meaning that the variables of Family Communication (X1), Family structure (X2), and Religious orientation (X3) affect family resilience (Y). Islamic Da'wah, when applied correctly and contextually, can play an important role in strengthening the resilience of polygamous families by improving effective communication and using the right Islamic mindset.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of celebrities who have undergone hijrah (spiritual migration) and subsequently taken on roles as religious preachers. The rise of celebrity ustazah significantly impacts the da'wa landscape, altering both the authority and perception of Islamic propagation. Many celebrities embracing hijrah not only undergo spiritual transformation but also contribute to a shift in the structural dynamics of religious outreach. Through these channels, celebrity ustazah emerge as influential religious figures, sometimes challenging established authorities. Using a qualitative netnographic method, this research gathers data from online news, social media, and YouTube. The study finds that the authority of celebrity ustazah is formed through intertwined aspects such as popularity, personal transformation, piety, and social engagement. However, methodological and scope limitations necessitate further in-depth exploration of this phenomenon.

Abstract

This article explores social cohesion among Muslim groups in the village of Sragen, which is home to five distinct groups: NU, Muhammadiyah, MTA, LDII, and Salafi, as well as some individuals identified as abangan. Masjid Rohmat serves as the focal point for religious events, such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. This research is based on field research conducted in 2023. The data was then analyzed using a qualitative approach. This research has found, despite their differing interpretations and practices of faith, the residents of this village coexist peacefully and harmoniously. Key factors that contribute to this social cohesion include family ties and community activities. Many villagers share familial connections, even if they hold different religious affiliations. For instance, one mother regularly participates in Yaasin and tahlil gatherings, while her son is a member of LDII. In another household, the husband is affiliated with Muhammadiyah, while the wife attends MTA public congregations. Additionally, community members collaborate on various social activities, transcending their religious differences.

Abstract

This article examines the communication models employed by Islamic preachers (da'i) in Indonesia and Malaysia, with the aim of identifying effective strategies for disseminating religious messages within different cultural and societal contexts. By comparing the da’wa (Islamic preaching) approaches in both countries, the study analyzes how cultural, religious, and social dynamics shape communication practices. It explores both interpersonal and mass-mediated communication channels to uncover their respective strengths, limitations, and implications for contemporary da’wa. The analysis also considers the challenges posed by globalization and technological advancement, emphasizing the necessity for preachers to adapt to shifting modes of communication. Ultimately, this comparative study offers critical insights into the factors that contribute to successful Islamic preaching in Southeast Asia and provides practical recommendations for enhancing the relevance and impact of da’wa across diverse audiences.
