Abstract

Anxious students are often concerned about the impressions that others form of them. When such students are confronted in a classroom with a learning situation that makes them uncomfortable, they may choose to withdraw from the activity. Some learners believe they cannot perform in English and consequently form negative expectations, which in turn lead to decreased effort and the avoidance of opportunities to enhance their communication skills. The goal of this study was to identify those factors, as perceived by students, that may contribute to anxiety, and those factors that may reduce anxiety in an attempt to understand more fully the role that anxiety may play in learning a foreign language.

Abstract

Social caring can be interpreted as affection and attention to other people which can later be manifested in an appreciating, accepting, and helping behavior. The behavior is not automatically possessed by each individual. Instead, it should be learnt, understood, internalized, and implemented in daily life. This article aims at discussing the strategies to enhance students social caring through multicultural awareness in language learning. Social caring serves as character values which appreciates diversity. It needs to be internalized from the very early age so that each individual understands how to deal with diversity. One of the alternatives in supporting the implementation of social care character is through multicultural-based learning activities. Hopefully, this type of learning leads students to appreciate diversity.  Keywords: character, social caring,  multicultural-based activities

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis paper is aimed at analyzing tragedy in a play entitled Desire Under the Elms portraying the primitive desires that influence several characters of the afore-mentioned play in the 1920s New England, and also that in a Javanese chronicle account of Rara Oyi that happened during the reign of Sunan Amangkurat I from 1646 to 1677 in the kingdom of Islamic Mataram.   Tragedy discussed in this paper is an occurrence that involves people of high status or people of high nobility, as well as ordinary people, who suffer and whose lives lead to their downfall partly because of the trouble they are unable to get rid of. The play Desire Under the Elms portrays tragedy that takes place among ordinary people, while the Javanese Chronicle story of Rara Oyi depicts tragedy of Rara Oyi, an ordinary but beautiful young lady vied by two noblemen, the king Sunan Amangkurat I of the kingdom of Islamic Mataram and his own crown prince, Pangeran Adipati Anom alias Prince Tejaningrat.   The analysis focuses on comparing the tragedy that befall either the protagonists or the antagonists in both the play and the chronicle account mentioned above. It turns out that their lives are in ruins due to their fate as they are not able to realize their dream of living with the lady they are madly in love with and wish to marry.

Abstract

Linguistic construction embodies information that is plausible to be modified in certain context when the speaker wants to emphasize on certain aspect. This is the nature of language users and the construction they produce. Each language is assumed to possess its own various ways of structuring the information spoken or written by the language user. English, for example, which is known as fixed word order language with SVO order has its various ways of structuring the information delivered by the speaker to the interlocutor. Preposing, postposing, and argument reversal are three best ways to indicate which information is prominent in the speaker’s mind so that the hearer will have the same concept as the speaker. Those are included as the alternative ways to construct sentence and propose syntactic choices to the speaker. Information structure has been one of the most intriguing fields of study involving both syntactic and pragmatic analyses. Hence, this paper aims at describing the noncanonical constructions in English and how they work to package information by using the interface of both disciplines.
