Abstract

Brebes Regency, Central Java, is one of Indonesia's most important shallot production center implementing intensive agriculture. In the bulb production, K is needed more than other nutrients. This study aimed to assess and describe the adsorption characteristics of K on the soils of the shallot farming system in Brebes District, Central Java. Soil samples were collected at several locations in the shallot center areas of Brebes Regency, Central Java Province. The observed soil properties included pH H2O, EC, soil texture, organic C, potential-K, exchangeable Ca, Mg, Na, and K, CEC, exchangeable Al and H, and water-soluble K. K adsorption was simulated by the Freundlich equation. The proportion of K from low to high of retention energy in the soil studied had the order, namely water-soluble K<exchangeable K<potential-K. The K adsorption result showed that the soil had a high capacity to adsorb K. It indicated that added K was accumulated in the soil. The high capacity to adsorb K indicated that K accumulated in Brebes with continuous K fertilization. This research recommended that to increase the efficiency of K fertilizer, it is necessary to introduce the technology to mine K in Brebes soils like bacteria capable of dissolving K or biofertilizers.

Abstract

Coal mining by the open-pit mining method creates the formation of a pit lake. The ex-mining site, over time, was gradually filled with contaminated water and must be returned to the water quality standard of compliance level. With proper treatment, the pit lakes have the potential for several benefits and subsequent uses. This study aimed to analyze the existing condition of the Paringin Pit Lake at South Kalimantan by identifying the quality of the water flow, and it is compliance with the parameter threshold values. The results showed that the pit lake water management had been carried out supported by good management of the catchment area and was indicated the stable category by geology technical study. The success of its revegetation processed in the area was shown by an erosion study in which the result was a very low-level category. No less important is the management of runoff water both in the quantity of water balance control and consistent water quality treatment to meet the quality standard values that have been set. The Paringin Pit Lake water management strategy is a form of activity that demonstrates compliance with good and responsible mining principles to support sustainable development that can serve as a good reference and example for other mining activities in terms of mine closure preparation.

Abstract

Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) is mining of gold deposits with simple physical and chemical characteristics using simple equipment and technology. In 2005, total mercury release in the environment in ASGM was more than twice from this sector, around 35% of total mercury, with an annual estimate at 727 tons, becoming the largest global resource of anthropogenic mercury release. In Indonesia, total mercury released to the environment is estimated at 340 metric tons per year and also among the top 3 global emitters of mercury, with 57.5% from the ASGM sector, where 60% is being emitted to air, 20% to water, and the remaining 20% to land. The location of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in this study are in Anggai village and Air Mangga village in Obi sub-district, South Halmahera district, North Maluku Province. Amalgamation has been the preferred method for treating the gold ores in both Anggai and Air Mangga Villages. The methodology provides a suggested approach for collecting and analyzing data and guidance for analyzing policy, regulatory, and institutional aspects and health aspects in the ASGM sector, mainly covering the Socio Economy ASGM research methodology. An assessment of the practicality of a proposed plan or project is also called Feasibility Study. The objective of this research was to describe the socio-economic impact and feasibility of gold processing of ASGM in Obi Island, South Halmahera district, North Maluku Province.

Abstract

Artisanal and small-scale gold is known to be sources of mercury pollution. This mercury contamination occurs when gold is isolated by the amalgamation method, contamination occurs. Mercury pollution in small-scale artisanal gold mining in the Kulon Progo area of Yogyakarta, the lowest tailing content was 164.49 mg kg-1, and the highest was 383.21 mg kg-1. This value exceeded the quality standard stipulated by Indonesian Government Regulation 22 of 2021 of 75 mg kg-1. The technology that can control pollution is stabilization/solidification (S/S). This research aimed to determine the optimum composition of the tailings mixture with tras soil. Variations in the design of tras soil with tailings were 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50, 40:60, 30:70, 20:80, and 10:90. The results showed that the optimum tras: tailings soil composition was 90:10, with a compressive test of 31 t m-2. Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) was 0.0033 mg L-1 according to the quality standard of Indonesian Government Regulation no. 22, 2021, with a value of 0.05 mg L-1. The compressive strength results follow the quality of the US EPA of 35 t m-2.

Abstract

The exploitation of natural resources remains a common practice in many countries to stimulate economic growth, and coal is the most commonly exploited resource. However, the mining process often causes environmental disturbance. Therefore, this research was conducted to analyze the ideal implementation of coal mine reclamation in Indonesia. In the post-mining area, the land is often arid, with voids that are prone to flood and erosion. The reclamation of this area is carried out by returning topsoil, adding organic material, and planting cover crops and fast-growing species. When the topographical conditions have steep slopes, scrap engineering is often added to hills up to a maximum height of 8 meters, trimming the slope with a maximum remaining slope of 35 degrees and making drainage channels with a width of more than 3 meters, a depth of more than 2 meters, and an edge slope of 2-5 percent. Approximately 70.59% of reclamation programs in Indonesia are aimed at reforesting mining areas into secondary forests because they were previously a forest ecosystem. The types of reclamation that had been carried out but were still uncommon included aquaculture, urban forests, parks playground, sports park, cattle farms, and fauna conservation ecotourism. A new approach to reclamation, such as eco-habitat, is important to obtain optimal social, economic, and ecological benefits. This approach involves optimizing sources of livelihood based on area rezoning according to the level of interference, revegetation of plants involving the community, and revitalization of sources of community livelihood, specifically environmental restoration with plant species as sources of food, nutrition, minerals, income, and non-timber forest products. Therefore, the reclamation program should be carried out through a collaborative partnership between companies, local communities, academics, technical ministries, and the media.

Abstract

Planting media is an important factor affecting coffee nurseries. Farmers in Wanagiri Village have problems in coffee cultivation because they have soil with a slightly acidic pH. This affects the availability of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) in the soil. P and potassium K solubilizing fungi can be used to increase the availability of P and K in the soil. This study aimed to analyze the viability of Aspergillus costaricaensis fungi on coffee husk carriers and the effect of A. costaricaensis biofertilizer on planting medium and the growth of Arabica coffee seedlings. The method consisted of the preparation carrier material, viability test of A. costaricaensis on coffee husk carrier, and test of the effect of A. costaricaensis on the planting medium and growth of arabica coffee seedlings. There were four fertilization treatments, i.e., P1 (organic fertilizer), P2 (100% NPK), P3 (organic fertilizer + biofertilizer), and P4 (organic fertilizer + biofertilizer + 50% NPK). Coffee husk carrier material maintained the viability of A. costaricaensis during the nine weeks of storage. The number of populations that could be maintained was log 7.67 (4.7 x 107 CFU g-1). The application of biofertilizer combined with organic fertilizers (P3) increased soil pH to 7.13, and it could potentially reduce the use of NPK fertilizer. Based on the observed growth parameters, it was shown that the treatment of biofertilizers combined with organic fertilizers increased the growth parameters of plant height and stem circumference of Arabica coffee seedlings.

Abstract

Rice grains produced in the conventional system are a prime source of heavy metal exposure in the human body leading to various health problems. The objective of this study was to assess heavy metals concentration in soil and rice grain under the conventional rice farming system in Banyumas, Indonesia, the pollution index, and the bioaccumulation factor. There were thirty-seven samples collected based on soil type, elevation, and irrigation system. The heavy metals level in soil ranged from 2.7 to 39.92 ppm of Pb, 0.11 to 3.01 ppm of Cd, and 4.79 to 61.32 ppm of Cr. Pb and Cr accumulation levels were below the maximum permissible concentration (MPC). A different result in Cd exceeded the MPC in 56.75% of sampling sites. Rice grain showed a high accumulation in Pb (6.85 ppm) and Cr (5.73 ppm) that exceeds the maximum standard. Cd exceeded 24.32% of sampling sites with an average of 0.54 ppm. The Pollution Index (PI) was medium in Cd and low in Pb and Cr. The Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF) of heavy metals in rice was Cd>Pb>Cr with averages of 0.64, 0.53, and 0.30, respectively. A high correlation resulted in Pb and Cd in soils and rice grains. Remediation is must done to reduce the heavy metals accumulation in soils and rice grains for environmental and health safety to prevent further contamination.

Abstract

Archipelago areas have high marine tourism resource potential, so they are often exploited for tourism needs. The characteristics of the Labuan Bajo region in the form of islands with geomorphological conditions in the form of hills have the potential to reduce the carrying capacity of the environment. Regional development in Labuan Bajo, classified as a semi-arid area for tourism purposes, can potentially cause a clean water crisis. This study aimed to analyze the environmental carrying capacity related to water availability to support the development of the Labuan Bajo region to become a super-priority tourism destination. The research method used is quantitative in the form of spatial analysis, literature studies, and water-carrying capacity analysis based on the Decree of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 297 of 2019. The research data were obtained from field observations and government agencies. The results show that the carrying capacity of water in 56.87% of the area in West Manggarai Regency has a deficit status. Most areas experiencing a deficit are on the mainland of Flores Island, especially in the urban area of Labuan Bajo. This is due to low rainfall, low soil ability to absorb water, and high anthropogenic activity from both local residents and tourism activities. In addition, the content of salinity, detergent, and BOD (biological oxygen demand) in groundwater samples in the urban area of Labuan Bajo has exceeded the water quality standard threshold. The results of this study can be considered for policy directions related to land use for regional development in semi-arid island areas.

Abstract

Mercury (Hg) is commonly utilized in artisanal gold mining on Buru Island; the Hg-contaminated tailing possibly contaminates the agricultural land nearby. In general, tailings contain very low organic carbon and plant nutrients but are high in mercury and have extreme soil acidity. The objective of this study was to observe the growth of various legume cover crops (LCC) and the change of Hg in tailing inoculated with Azotobacter-Trichoderma. The field trial was conducted on Buru Island of Maluku by using a split-plot design with three replications. The main plot was LCC species, composed of Centrosema pubescens (CP), Mucuna sp. (MC), and Crotalaria sp. (CR); the subplots were microbial inoculants composed of two formulations of Azotobacter-Trochoderma inoculants. The results showed that the Mucuna sp. and consortia Azotobacter-Trichoderma (2:1) had the highest survival rate in the tailings and Hg uptake by 8.83 mg kg-1 per plant. Consortia Azotobacter-Trichoderma inoculant with the composition of 2:1 (v:v) was able to increase soil pH, total bacterial population, LCC biomass, and Hg uptake by LCC plants. The highest Hg removal effectivity was observed in the plot treated with Crotalaria sp. and in a plot with Azotobacter-Trichoderma (2:1), which was 34.0% and 33.6%, respectively.

Abstract

Changes in natural resources have presented major problems for farming communities in rural areas. In general, farmers diversify their livelihoods in the non-agricultural sector without paying attention to the impact on the availability of natural resources in the future. Sand mining activity has become one of the short-term solutions for farming communities in rural areas. As a result, a problem such as land degradation occurs in the village, thereby generating negative impacts on the availability of nature for the next generation. This study aimed to analyze the causes of land degradation and describe the Integrated Farming System (IFS) as a solution to address the land degradation problem in Bambang Village, Wajak District, Malang Regency. This study applied a qualitative case study research design, and the research methods included in-depth interviews with 40 informants, observation, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). The location of this study was determined by purposive sampling, considering that Bambang Village is one of the villages affected by land degradation due to sand mining. The results of the study revealed that land degradation was due to the vulnerability of the farming community; thus, another alternative was proposed to utilize part of the land (20%) as a sand mining area without neglecting environmental preservation as a reward for environmental services. In addition, IFS and the actors as ecopreneurs were considered as alternative solutions to meet the needs and to prepare the farming community resilience through ecological preservation by sustaining the ecosystem balance. In practice, IFS requires integration among stakeholders, farmers and concerned institutions.
