Abstract

Waste management activity includes reducing and handling waste should be is a systematic, comprehensive and continuous process. The activity was aimed to improve the public health and environmental quality, as well as transform waste to become useful resource. To support a smart environment city in Probolinggo City, a sustainable waste management model is needed. The aim of this study was to identify the use of Internet as information technology platform in waste management (case study in Probolinggo City, East Java, Indonesia). The method of this research was carried out with continuity between community participation, information technology and waste management. This research was conducted in Probolinggo City, East Java Province. The method used is to analyze is a qualitative descriptive analysis method to identify problems and identify the need for the development of information technology-based community participation in waste management in Probolinggo City. The results stated the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies is providing new ways to improve urban environmental monitoring and management. IoT environment makes it possible to perceive, acquire, process and transfer environmental information. The development of an Internet-based system application for waste management has been developed by the City Government of Probolinggo through the Environment Agency, an apps named SIEMAK (Sistem Informasi Edukasi Manajemen Kas Rakas). The development of this application system is an implementation of the Smart Environment dimension in the development of a Smart City in Probolinggo City. SIEMAK is integratively used by waste managers and household waste producers. However, the content needs to be updated to serve user needs. Implications and strategies for increasing community participation with information technology-based for waste management as the development of a Smart Environment City of Probolinggo.

Abstract

Sustainable forest management is crucial to maintaining environmental balance while enhancing the well-being of local communities. This study aims to evaluate the sustainability of Community Forest (Hutan Kemasyarakatan-HKm) management carried out by Forest Farmer Groups (Kelompok Tani Hutan-KTH) in Kediri Regency, one of the regions in East Java Province that has obtained HKm approval. The assessment employed a qualitative approach using the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) method through RAPFISH software, supported by Monte Carlo and leverage analyses to measure the sustainability index and identify sensitive attributes. Five dimensions were analyzed: ecological, economic, social, technological, and institutional. The results indicate that HKm management falls into the moderately sustainable category, with an average sustainability index score of 60.1. The institutional dimension recorded the highest score (66.84), while the ecological dimension was the lowest (55.76). Of the 56 attributes analyzed, 15 were identified as sensitive, primarily in the technological and economic domains. These findings reinforce the relevance of the Triple Bottom Line approach, sustainable development theory, social capital, and new institutionalism in explaining the dynamics and challenges of community-based forest management. The policy implications of this study emphasize the importance of strategic interventions, including strengthening local institutions, adopting appropriate technologies, improving access to markets and capital, and developing community capacity in a participatory and integrated manner, to enhance the future sustainability of HKm management.

Abstract

Manggis Gadungan Nature Reserve (NR) is a nature conservation area that plays a vital role in protecting biodiversity, as a water catchment area, and a life support system. The natural ecosystem in Manggis Gadungan NR has become increasingly important to preserve and defend since it was designated as a Pusat Ficus Nasional (PFN) in 2022. The balance of the ecosystem in Manggis Gadungan NR, with its various essential functions, must be maintained with the support of its buffer zone. Therefore, optimal management is not only for the Manggis Gadungan NR area but also for its buffer zone. A land-use inventory study can serve as the basis for sustainable management planning. Thus, this study aims to determine the land use inventory in the Manggis village and Manggis Gadungan NR as a basis for sustainable management planning. This study uses the Manggis Gadungan Nature Reserve as the study area, with spatial analysis and literature review to determine the land-use percentages in the Manggis Village and Manggis Gadungan NR, as a basis for sustainable environmental resource management. The study found five land-use types in the Manggis Village and Manggis Gadungan NR: production forests, settlements, rice fields, yards, and cultivated land. The most extensive land use is rice fields, covering 44 percent of the total area of 311.83 Ha, and the smallest is settlements. The land-use variations in the Manggis Village and Manggis Gadungan NR can be used to develop sustainable management plans that incorporate agroforestry, farmer groups, and reforestation models, and to assist villages in supporting environmental, social, and economic sustainability

Abstract

Groundwater contamination in Indonesia poses a significant public health problem with over 80 percent of urban shallow groundwaters exhibit coliform counts higher than acceptable limits; however, crucial research gaps still exist concerning geographic coverage, time monitoring, emerging pollutant assessment, and evaluation of management strategies. In this study, two different methodologies have been used that included (a) the PRISMA-based systematic review methodology to gather information on contaminant types, assessment, and management from 33 papers in the literature and (b) bibliometric analysis including 438 papers to monitor publication trends and developments within the period of 2005 to 2025. The main findings of the systematic review include the identification of some common problems associated with microbial contamination, chemical pollution, and management practices. At the same time, bibliometric analysis pointed out that there is an upward trend for the number of publications until 2021. Among common problems, microbiological contamination represented a major issue especially in urban areas according to the systematic review. Major problems in urban areas include high nitrate contents, presence of heavy metals exceeding WHO limits, microplastics, and pyrethroids. Advanced methods used in the literature remain rare. This paper contributes to Indonesia's 2019 Water Resources Law.
