Abstract

This study aims to investigate the issue of assessment in the Moroccan educational system. Precisely, it aims at exploring the washback of the Secondary national English examination on English teaching and learning practices in the context of upper secondary education in Morocco. To attain the objective of the study, questionnaires are distributed to 70 teachers, and a focus group protocol with 20 students was conducted in three high schools. The findings reveal that the examination has a strong negative influence on the students and the teachers. The main harmful washback effect of this exam is found to be the neglect of teaching the skills of listening and speaking as they are not assessed. Moreover, the results of the study show that the contents of teaching are highly influenced by the exam. Even though the syllabus was changed from grammar-based to communicative-based, English Examinations are still grammar-ruled and reading-based. Similarly, students are also affected by the washback effect of the national exam because it brings anxiety that can distort their progress and performance, and students might not be able to learn real-life knowledge but instead learn discrete points of knowledge that are assessed. On the basis of these results, a new English exam is suggested, hoping to prompt positive washback and refine the English-speaking performance of Moroccan highschoolers.

They pose the Minangkabau language as a political issue in the national interaction. This study employs content analysis and qualitative historical research methodologies. The content analysis approach is used to determine the accuracy of information gathered from many sources, as well as to describe and analyze the Minangkabau language’s politicization by the Minangkabau people, Dutch colonialism, and the government of The Republic of Indonesia. This paper shows how Minangkabau people view their mother tongue as a part of national identity, how they make it as the ammunition for the movement of resentencing to fight against the central government, how Minangkabau people make their mother tongue a part of ethnic identity politics; and how language policy of the Dutch colonial and Republic of Indonesia government influenced the change in Minangkabau political orientation. The analysis proves that language has become inseparable from regional history dynamism and Minangkabau regional-political life. The language attitude of the Minangkabau people in the colonial era showed a high national spirit. Language has the capacity to foster emotional connections among its proponents, whereas history can offer a comprehensive glimpse into the evolution and progression of language throughout time.

Abstract

The paper studies Chairil Anwar’s poem Senja di Pelabuhan Kecil. It focuses on analyzing the strategies Chairil Anwar applies in manipulating text double structure (the linguistic and literary ones). The data analyzed derives from the poem and in order to illuminate some key terms in the poem, comparison with other poems by the same poet is taken. The analysis of the poem is conducted by elaborating both linguistic and literary approaches. That is conducted by analytically discuss the linguistic devices and their interaction with the structure of literary tropes. It is found that the poet relies much on intensifying the synergy between the two structures. The intensive correlate manifests in the harmonious collaboration between Serial Verb construction and the event seriality; the correlation of morpho-syntactically priming of agent’s role (voice system) and the foregrounding of agent initiation of event (deviation from ordinary use of language). Phonologically considered, the poem shows parallelism between the prosody of line (sound) and the synesthetic (Winter, 2019), the co-perception through vision and hearing sensing. Another essential correlation found constitutes syntactic-phonological pattern which facilitates the representation of encyclopedic experience, which is the rhythm of the speaker’s heartbeat.
