Abstract

The purposes of this study was to find out the effectiveness of commercial insecticides to German cockroaches. Study was conducted from September to November 2013 in the Laboratory of Animal Physiology, Department of Biology, Andalas University. This study used the contact method (glass jar) with three strains of German cockroaches (VCRU–WHO, GFA-JKT and PLZ-PDG) and five kinds of insecticide (ByWS, HtWS, MtWS, RdWS, and VpWS). The average of knockdown time and lethal time were counted with a probit analysis. The effectiveness category divided into two groups, value of knockdown time and lethal time were needed to be achieved in a certain time. The results showed that based on the value of knockdown time 90% (KT90), effective aerosol insecticide to knockdown the German cockroach is aerosol insecticide ByWS, HtWS and VpWS. Aerosol insecticide MtWS was only effective to knockdown the German cockroach VCRU-WHO strain and ineffective for GFA-JKT and PLZ-PDG strains. Aerosol insecticide RdWS was only effective to knockdown the German cockroach VCRU-WHO and GFA-JKT strains, ineffective for PLZ-PDG strain. Based on the lethal time 90% (LT90)  there was no single insecticide effective to kill German cockroach.

Abstract

Generally the essential oils are antibacterial and antifungal. Cymbopogon nardus which is included in Graminae family commonly produced an essential oil. Another plant Elettariopsis slahmong which is known contains essential oils derived from Zingiberaceae family has not been commonly used. This plant is only used as a spice and salads in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. A study about antifungal activity of essential oil of citronella grass (Cymbopogon nardus L.) and elettariopsis slahmong Lim. against Colletotrichum sp. on Red Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) was conducted since March to May 2013 in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Andalas University. This study used experimental method with three dose treatments and three replications for each kind of essential oils. The essential oils were distillated from Cymbopogon nardus and Elettariopsis slahmong. The treatments used 250, 500 and 750 ppm of essential oils. This study found that Cymbopogon nardus could be a potential antifungal prevent Colletotrichum sp. The higher dose was the better preventive effect. There was no effect of Elettariopsis slahmong on Colletotrichum sp.Keywords: essential oil, Cymbopogon nardus, Elettariopsis slahmong, antifungal

Abstract

Thermophile protease has economic value because this enzyme is useful on all kind of industry that used high temperature on it production process. In the effort of obtaining indigenous alkaline thermostable a protease bacterial that produce we explore potential hot spring at Semurup, Kerinci Jambi. This study was conducted from September 2013 to February 2014, Water samples were collected by purposive sampling, the character of thermophilic bacteria were described for each in laboratory of microbiology and biomolecular, development of biology, faculty of mathematic and natural science Andalas university, Padang. There were 40 thermophile colonies, 7 isolates showed alkali proteolytic  index range from 0.3 to 2.00. SIII-10 isolate showed the highest in alkali proteolitic index. The characteristic of SIII-10 are: whute and bolt colony, gram negative, motil, positive sitrat agar and positive gelatin.Key words, Isolation, characterization, alkaline protease, thermostable, Hot spring.

Abstract

Research on the “Effect of acidification of coconut water and rice washing water as an composting alternative of growth medium for gray oyster mushroom (Pleurotus Sajor Caju (Fries) Singer)” was conducted from February to March 2014 in Microbiology Research Laboratory, Biology Departement, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Andalas University. The research aimed to determine the acidity level that can be used as an alternative for the composting of growth medium of gray oyster mushroom as well as the effect of addition of coconut water and rice washing water for the misellium growth. Adjusting pH of coconut water and rice water showed different effects to the growth myselium and the production medium (baglog). Completely Random Design (CDR) with factorial pattern is the method that used in this research. Acidification of coconut water and rice water with pH 3, pH 4 and normal pH have different effect. The fastest growth of mycelium obtained from coconut water with pH 4 liming treatment (9 days).Key Words : acidification, coconut water, rice washing water, Pleurotus sajor caju, composting alternative

Abstract

The research about effect of fungicide (Dithane M-45) on growth of corn (Zea mays L.) and spore density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) had been done from August to November 2013 in a wire house at Laboratory of Plant Physiology, Departement of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, Andalas University. The research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 7 treatmens and 4 replications. The treatments were varions doses of Dithane M-45; A (0 g/l), B (1,5 g/l), C (2,0 g/l), D (2,5 g/l), E (3,0 g/l), F (3,5 g/l), G (4,0 g/l). The results showed that Dithane M-45 decreased height and number of leaves of corn plants, leaf dry weight and spore density of AMF. The higher doses of fungicide used the fewer spores were obtained. Keywords: mycorrhizal, fungicide, Zea mays

Abstract

A study about community of epilithic algae was conducted on April until August 2014. The objective of this study was to clarify composition and structure of epilithic algae in Ombilin River and water quality of Ombilin River based on community of epilithic algae. Samples were collected by survey and brushing method and the research station was choosed 6 stations purposively. The results showed that totally 72 genera had been found with total density of epilithic algae was 388.92ind/cm2to 2139.04 ind/cm2. The highest density of epilithic algae was found in station III (Talawi) and the lowest in station II (Lubuk Pinang). The dominant epilithic algae were Cocconeis, Synedra, Navicula, Denticula and Gomphonema (Baccilariophyta), Stigeoclonium (Chlorophyta), Phormidium and Calothrix (Cyanophyta), Ceratium (Dinophyta) and Audouinella (Rhodophyta). Diversity index was 1.50 to 2.48, where the highest was observed at station II (Lubuk Pinang) and the lowest one at station III (Talawi). Equitability index was 0.42 to 0.68. Similarity index was 50 to 74.70%. Saphrobic coefficient was 0.61–1. The result also showed that Ombilin Riverwere polluted slightly byorganic and inorganic materials in β-mesosaprobic phase.

Abstract

A study on dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) at Lembah Harau Nature Reserve was conducted from July to September 2013. The aim of this study was to identify dung beetles species at the Nature Reserve. We used pitfall trap to collect the beetle along three tracking paths from 500 to 800 asl. We successfully collected 539 individual dung beetles those belong to 18 species, eight genera, six tribes and two subfamilies. Eleven species (61,1 %) of the beetles was not reported in previous study in Indonesia. This suggest to further exploration using various method in various habitat types are necessary.Keyword : dung beetle, Scarabaeidae, Lembah Harau, West Sumatra

Abstract

An experimental study on growth of Hopea mengarawan Miq. seedlings under different light intensity was conducted from June to October 2012 at open field. This experiment aimed to find out optimal light intensity for the growth of H. mengarawan seedlings. The study used completely randomized design with four treatments and six replications. The treatments were control (100), 80, 60 and 40% of light intensities. The result showed  light intensity did not give significant effect to the growth of H. mengarawan seedlings.
