Abstract

Vegetation analysis of weeds at rubber plantation (Hevea brasiliensis Mull.Arg.) at Batang Kapas, Pesisir Selatan, was carried out from March to April 2013. The weeds were sampled purposively using plot quadrat method at three and six years old of rubber plantations. There were totally 13 families, 23 genera dan 27 species of weeds found in the two types of rubber plantations. The two locations were dominated by different species of weeds. Borreria alata has the highest Summed Dominance Ratio (SDR) at three years and Scleria sumatrensis at six years old of rubber  plantations. Diversity indices were relative moderate (2,17 at three years old and 2,2 at six years old rubber plantations) in both locations and species similarity between the two location were low (45,7%).

Abstract

Murashige-Skoog media enriched using 6-Benzyl Aminopurine (BAP) and sucrose was conducted from June 2013 to February 2014 at the Laboratory of Plant Physiology, Department of Biology, Andalas University. This study aimed to determine the ability of shoot formation of white turmeric (Curcuma zedaoria Roscoe) on the effect of BAP and sucrose concentration. We used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 8 treatments and 3 replications, BAP (0, 1.5, 3 and 4.5 mg/L) and sucrose (3 and 5%) of MS medium. The result showed that the percentage of shoot induction was 100%. The best combination of sucrose and BAP in shoot induction was obtained on 5% sucrose and 1.5 mg/L BAP. While for the first immerge of shoot was obtained on 5% sucrose and 4.5 mg/L BAP in 5 days after inoculation. All treatments but did not give any significant effect to the number and height of shoots.Key words: Curcuma zedoaria, shoot, sucrose and 6-Benzyl Aminopurine

Abstract

The study about “characterization of amilo-thermophilic obligat bacteria from Semurup Hot Spring” has been conducted from November 2013 to March 2014 in Laboratory of Microbiology, Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang. The purpose of this study was to find out and analyze isolate amilo-thermophilic obligat bacteria. The result of this study showed that isolate SII-7 from Semurup Hot Spring survived at 70 ºC, that produced amylase with unique macroscopic characters: random, cream and smooth surface. The isolate SII-7 was bacille, Gram positive, has endospore as a product, motility and catalase positive.Keyword: Characterization, thermophilic obligat, bacteria, amylase.

Abstract

Wallowing activity is thought to have some important roles in the viability of wild boars (Sus scrofa L.). The characteristics of wallow and wallowing activity can show the ability of the boars to adapt with variety environmental challenges. Study on the characteristics of wallow and wallowing activity of the boars at the Biological Education and Research Forest (HPPB) Andalas University was conducted from September to December 2012 and from April to July 2013. This study was conducted by observing the characters of five wallows, while wallowing activities at two different wallows were observed by using camera traps. The results showed that wallows were found mainly rounded in shape, located near by habitual animal path with shadowed by dense canopy. The dominant substrate of wallows is particles of gravel and coarse sand. The rubbing trees were found around the wallows. From a total 197 observation days, we found 53 video and 51 photos which indicated the wallowing activities within 26 different visiting times. Those activities occurred in the morning between 6:00 am to 09:00 am, with the temperature around the wallows was 25⁰ C. Activities performed while wallowing is rolling, standing, resting and rooting. The result of this study may suggest that wallowing activity has more important function than thermoregulation as previously suggested. Keywords:  wild boar, characteristics wallow, wallowing activity, thermoregulation.

Abstract

A study on community of phytoplankton in Diatas lake was conducted from April to September 2014. This study aimed to describe composition and structure of phytoplankton of the lake. We sampled phytoplankton at 6 stations purposively using plankton net that hauled vertically. We  found 70 species of phytoplankton those belong to five classes, i.e. Bacillariophyceae (33 species), Chlorophyceae (27 species), Cyanophyceae (5 species), Dinophyceae (3 species) and Euglenophyceae (1 species). Total density of phytoplankton ranged from 881.06 to 3,196.02 ind/l. The highest density was at Station VI (Teluk Kinari) and the lowest one was at Station III (Muaro). Phytoplanktons with higher relative density (RD > 5 %) were Melosira italica, Synedra ulna, Melosira granulata (Bacillariophyceae), Staurastrum cereates, Chlorella vulgaris and Spirogyra fluviatis (Chlorophyceae). Shannon-Wiener Diversity index of phytoplankton (H`) ranged from 1.30 to 1.71 with the highest diversity index was at Station IV (Batang Hari) and the lowest was at Station V (central lake). Equitability index (E) was ranged from 0.39 to 0.57. Similarity index among stations were low which ranged from 34.48  to 62.50%.

Abstract

The research about Acclimatization of Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes gracilis Korth.) Planlet on Variety of Mixed Planting Medium Ultisol Soil had been conducted from May to August 2014 in Greenhouse and Plant Physiology Laboratory Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Andalas University. This study aimed to determine the influence of the media composition on the growth of seedlings of Nepenthes gracilis Korth. This study used completely randomized design (CRD) method with 5 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments of planting medium were consisted of A. Ultisol soil (control), B. Ultisol soil : manure : sand (1:1:1), C. Ultisol soil : manure : husk (1:1:1), D. Ultisol soil : manure : sand (2:1:1) and E. Ultisol soil : manure : husk (2:1:1). The results showed that treatment A i.e. ultisol soil (control) was the best growing medium for Nepenthes seedlings growth during acclimatization.

Abstract

An experimental study on the effect of Gambier (Uncaria gambir R.) on burned skin of male white mice (Mus musculus L.) was conducted at The Animal Physiology Laboratory Andalas University. This experiment used Complete Random Design (CDR) consisted of five treatments, i.e: 0.00%, 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75%, 1.00% and five replication with the observation lasted for 15 days. The results showed that Gambier gave significantly different effects (p = 0.004) on both the percentage of healing and the wound recovery. The highest percentage of wound healing was 94.783% and the largest diameter of wound recovery was 9.436 mm obtained at 0.50%  at 8 days.Keyword: Uncaria gambir, burned skin, wound recovery.
