Abstract

Jellyfish are marine life that abundant in the waters of Indonesia, however its considered harmful and waste for fishermen because of its stinging cells,so it has not been exploited optimally by the community. The purpose of this research is to determine the abundance of jellyfish (Aurelia aurita L.) in Coastal Waters of Batu Kalang, Tarusan, Pesisir Selatan regency, West Sumatra. This study was done in March, May and October 2016 with a survey method and the distribution of two locations: the locations I is 50 m from the beach and locations 2 is 150 m from the beach then divided into 6 sampling points. The results are in March obtained A. auritaL. 27 ind /20 efforts, in May 76 ind /20 efforts and in October 15 ind/20 effort, from 3 months of observation A.aurita L. more found in location 1 than location 2. In March, A. aurita L. obtained in the phase Ephyra while in May and October obtained in a phase medusa. The average value of the diameter of the body of A. aurita L. in March was 10.26 cm, 25.80 cm in May and 13.53 cm in October. The relationship between the diameter and weight A. aurita L. is a positive linear, the larger the diameter then the more weight ofA.aurita L. body.

Abstract

The seagrass beds are the spawning, nursery, and the feeding ground for some oceanic biota. It’s also can trapped the sediment and stabilized the substrate so the waters looks clear. Beside those abilities, seagrasses are also can store the carbon. The research was conducted in karang tirta’s coastal area, padang city to analyze the carbon stock of seagrass that stored within their biomass. The biomass was analyzed by harvesting the seagrass at transect 25x25cm, while the carbon stock was analyzed by using walkley & black method. Seagrass beds in karang tirta’s coastal has 14,1 ha (142.546,36 m2) distribution area and it’s stored 18,05 tons of carbon. based on these result the seagrass beds in karang tirta’s coastal area has stored 1,2 tons C/ha. the highest carbon stock has found in the below ground, especially in their rhizomes.

Abstract

A study on the community of butterfly fish (Chaetodontidae) has been conducted from April to June 2013 in two locations of coral reefs at Taman Nirwana coastal area, Padang, namely tourism zone and mangrove zone. This study aimed to determine composition and community structure of butterfly fish. This study used visual census method with limitation of 2.5 meters of view to the left and to the right along the line transects. The results found that nine species of butterfly fish which belong to two genera; Heniochus and Chaetodon. There were three species of Heniochus (i.e Heniochus pleurotaenia, H. varius, and H. Singularis) and six species of Chaetodon (i.e Chaetodon triangulum, C. collare, C. vagabundus, C. trifasciatus, C. rafflesii, and C. Kleinii). The abundance and species diversity of butterfly fish did not significantly differed between tourism and mangrove zones. In line with the two previous parameters, similarity indices were found very close between the tourism and mangrove zones. The low index values for all of the parameters may indicate a low quality of the coastal area community due to the human interferences.Key word : Chaetodontidae, composition, community structure, Nirwana Park beach-Padang

Abstract

Histological analysis of liver of hard-lipped barb (Osteochilus hasseltii C.V.) was conducted from March to October 2013 at the Laboratory of Animals Structure and Development, Department of Biology, Faculty Sciences, Andalas University, Padang. Those fish samples were collected form Maninjau and Singkarak Lakes, West Sumatra. The liver tissue were isolated, fixated, dehydrated, planted on paraffin and colored by Haematoxilyn-eosin. Cell Structure and forms were described based on Microscopic tissue study. Results found that the histological damage of fish liver from Maninjau showed three storeys of Hypertrophy, lysis, and necrosis, while Singkarak showed two storeys of hypertrophy and lysis. Those results may indicate that hard-lipped barb from the two lakes had been conminated by some pollutants. Keywords: Osteochilus hasseltii, histopatology, liver, Singkarak Lake, Maninjau Lake.
