Abstract

Soil microstructure as affected by organic matter and calcium was investigated by polarising microscope examination after three months incubation and by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after one month incubation. Both polarising microscopy and SEM observations revealed an improvement of soil microstructure with the addition of cow dung and wheat straw.  Compared to the addition of dung, the straw amendment resulted in a greater microorganism diversity and lager porosity values.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to determine the physiological ripen time of mengkudu seed based on penology study. The study was conducted in the Green House and Experimental Farm of Jurusan Biologi FMIPA Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM). Penological observation was done since the beginning of flowering until the fruit formation was completed and mature. The experiment conducted used three trees, in each tree three branches with all their blossoming flowers were labeled for observation.  Therefore, there were 3 x 3 = 9 branches including their flowers were observed for the flower transformations and development, fruit formation and fruit maturity stages. There were three stages found for the mengkudu fruit to reach maturity.  Such stages were stage M-1 (perfectly           fruit formation), stage M-2 (morphological mature), and stage M-3 (physiological mature). Based on visual observation, the exocarp changes were followed by mesocarp (fruit meat) and endocarp            (seed skin) transformations.

Abstract

Cocoa bean is important (top) commodity especially in plantation sub-sector, and generallyin agriculture sector in Central Sulawesi Economy. The aim of the study was to identifyand to analyze the productivity function of smallholders’ cocoa farm in Central Sulawesi. The panel data analysis, i.e. fixed effect model was applied. Data used were secondarytime series data of 2000 – 2008, i.e. regency production and prices of cocoa beans, pricesof substitution commodity, prices of input factors, regency inflation, GDP and theexchange value of the currency's main export destination countries (Malaysia and USA).The secondary data was confirmed with primary data taken by purposive and unproportionalstratified random sampling techniques. The number of farmers interviewedwas 138 people. The results of the research showed that the productivity of smallholders’cocoa farm tended to be constant even decreased. Instead of having negative effect onproductivity, GDP of USA, and pesticide prices were found to have significant and positiveeffect. Besides, wage had negative effect but statistically significant. This is reasonablebecause cocoa farming requires a high level of maintenance. Finally, GDP of Malaysia hadnegative effect but statistically significant suggesting that the quality of the cocoa beanscoming from the province was low.Key Words : Cocoa farm, productivity function, and smallholders.

Abstract

The research was conducted in South Banawa Watatu village of Donggala district. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of production inputs and irrigation service quality on rice production in irrigated areas of Watatu. Total population of 144 farmers were divided into two (2) categories: (1) 92 people who pay irrigation service fee; and (2) 52 people who do not pay the service fees.  About 25% of people from each category was selected, so the total respondents was 36 people Data was analyzed using a multiple linear analysis with Cobb Douglas production function model. The results showed that, independent variables (Xi) consisting of land area (X1), seeds (X2), urea (X3), NPK (X4), and labor (X5) and dummy quality of irrigation service (D), simultaneously had significant effect on the dependent variable or the output (Y). The determinant coefficient value (R2) of 0.975 suggesting that 97.5%ofthe fluctuation in rice production (Y) under irrigation in Watatu can be explained by the independent variables (Xi), while 2.5% was caused by other factors not included in the model.  Partially, the land area (X1), the use of urea (X3), the use of NPK fertilizer (X4) and the dummy irrigation service quality (D) significantly affected the rice production (Y) whereas the remaining production inputs had no significant effect on the rice production (Y). The rice production under the irrigation service quality of available category was 63.89% whereas under that of unavailable category was 36.11% indicating that the farmers consciously have the will and desire to pay the irrigation service fees for eachplanting season. Keywords : Input production, irrigation, quality of service, wetland rice.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate seedling vigor of sugar palm from three different locations of mother plant grown in media of soil-organic matter (OM) mixture under drought condition in pre-nursery.  The experiment was conducted at the Analytical and Seed Technology Laboratories, and the Academic Garden of Agriculture Faculty, Tadulako University from June to October 2008. A Split Split Plot Design was used with three factors:  mother plant place of origin consisted of three locations, i.e Parigi, Palolo and Napu.  Media composition, consisted of two levels i.e Soil : OM (1:1) and soil : OM (2:1).  Water status consisted of two levels i.e optimum (100% field capacity) and sub-optimum (50% field capacity).  The treatments were replicated three times, thus there were 36 experimental units.  The seedlings of the hole locations have the same vigor and hypothetic vigor index when growing in mixture of soil : OM (2:1), although under sub-optimum water status (50% field capacity).
