Abstract

The objective of this research is to characterize fatty acid compositions of neutral lipids of muscle (NLM) and inter-muscular adipose tissue (IAT) lipids of weaners compared to the matures. The outcomes of this research will be basic information to change the fatty acid composition in producing healthy meat according to the consumer prespectives.Sixteen cattle, consisted of eight Donggala and Bali cattle, which each breed consisted of four weaners and matures respectively were slaughtered, then muscle of Longisimus Dorsi and intermuscular adipose tissue samples were taken for fatty acid composition analyses by Gas Chromatography. This research found eleven saturated fatty acids and eleven unsaturated fatty acids in NLM and IAD. The saturated fatty acid are Capric acid (C10:0), Lauric acid (C12:0), Tridecylic acid (C13:0), Myristic acid (C14:0), Pentadecylic acid (C15:0), Palmitic acid (C16:0), Margaric acid (C17:0), Stearic acid (C18:0), Arachidic acid (C20:0), Behenic acid (C22:0), dan Lignoceric acid (C24:0). The eleven unsaturated fatty acids found consisted of 5 MUFAs and 6 PUFAs. The MUFAs are Miristoleic acid (C14:1), Palmitoleic acid (C16:1), Oleic acid (C18:1), Gadoleic acid (C20:1), dan Nervonic acid (C24:1). The PUFAs are Linoleic acid (LA)(C18:2), α-Linolenic acid (ALA) (C18:3), Arachidonic acid (AA)(C20:4), Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)(C20:5), Erucic acid (C22:1) dan Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (C22:6).Oleic acid was found to be the most abundant, with proportion of more than 60%, of 22 fatty acids detected, followed by Palmitic acid around 25%. Myristic acid, Pentadecylic acid, Margaric acid dan Palmitoleic acid had concentration ranged between 1 to 3%, whiles the others had concentration of less than 1% respectivelly. Oleic concentration of NLM in weaners (65,748 ± 1,539) was found to be significant higher (P<0.05) than that in matures (60,635 ± 1,440). For other unsaturated fatty acids, Miristoleic acid (C14:1) was found to be lower (P<0.05) in NLM of weaners (0,095 ± 0,024) compared to that of matures (0,186 ± 0,023). This research also found the difference in Capric acid concentration of NLM between weaners and matures, which weaner (0,024 ± 0,006) was highly significant lower (P<0.01) than mature (0,063 ± 0,006). This research did not find any difference in both saturated-and unsaturated fatty acid concentrations between weaners and matures in IAT lipids. Keywords: fatty acid composition, neutral lipids of muscle, inter-muscular adipose tissue, weaners, matures, donggala cattle.

Abstract

An experiment on the conception rates of local Palu goat artificially inseminated with sperms that were prepared in vitro with supplementation of tannin from Leucocephala with             a glucose extender was done in Palu and Sigi District, Central Sulawesi from June to November 2009. The sperm donors were 2 Ettawa Crosses aged about 2.5 years from which the sperms were collected with artificial vagina. Normal ejaculates (based on microscopic as well as macroscopic analyses) were prepared into liquid sperms suitable for artificial insemination (AI). A diluted sperm with 18.9% glucose extender served as the control (K0) and this was directly (day 0 after dilution) used to inseminate 19 PGF2α-synchronized goats. For treatment group, a dlituted sperm was supplemented with Leucocephala tannin (2.5% per ml sperms) and was used to inseminate 22 female goats after being frozen for 14 d at 14°C. Spermatozoa concentration for the two preparations was similar  (200 x 106 cell/ml/AI). It was found that the conception rate for the control group was 73.68% while for the treatment group was 95.45%.Key words : Artificial Insemination (AI), conception rate, Leucocephala Tannin, local goat Palu, sperm preparation.

Abstract

Palm sludge is a by-product of the palm oil processing that is quite numerous and still contains nutrients that can be utilized as an alternative feed ingredient for poultry. However, high crude fiber content resulted in the utilization of alternative feed ingredients for poultry is limited. The fermentation process can increase nutritive value of the palm sludge. This research aimed to study the use effect of the fermented palm sludge (FPS)in the ration on the growth performance of broiler. The research has been conducted in the animal teaching farm of theAnimal Husbandry Faculty starting from October 9th to November 13th, 2013 using 80 DOCs (day old chickens) produced by PT. Satwa Utama Raya, Makassar. Those DOCswere raised in the 20 cages that each has a size of 60x60x90 cm. Each cage was placed by buckets of ration and drinking water. A complete randomizeddesign was used in this research with 5 treatments and 4 replications.  The treatments were R0 (ration without FPS), R1 (ration with 2.5% FPS), R2 (ration with 5.0% FPS), R3 (ration with 7.5% FPS), R4 (ration with 10.0% FPS). The research parameters were feed consumption, body weight gain, and feed conversion. The result showed that treatments affected non-significantly (P>0.05) on the three observed variables. It was concluded that the fermented palm sludge still can be used up to 10% in the broiler’s ration.Key words: broiler, fermented palm sludge, growth performance

Abstract

Red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) has been widely cultured throughout the world. Red tilapia is generally cultured in intensive system to increase production. However, many problems could be aroused from intensive culture including deterioration of water quality and fish health. Probiotics can be applied to overcome these problems. Probiotics contain beneficial microbes that can decompose metabolic products and stimulate the cellullar immune responses, thus enhancing the health and the growth of the fish and maintaining the quality of the water in ponds. The study aims to determine the effect of probiotics on the growth and survival of the red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.). The study was designed in a completely randomized design (CRD), which consisted of 4 treatments and 5 replicates. The treatment consisted of treatment A (control) without probiotics, treatment B (0.01 mL of probiotics / 30 L of water), treatment C (0.1 mL / 30 L), and treatment D (1.0 mL / 30 L). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that administration of probiotics with different concentrations in the cultured medium had a high significant effect on the absolute growth of the red tilapia (P<0.01). The highest absolute growth (8,94 g) and survival rate (84%) were found in cultured media with probiotic dose of 1.0 mL / 30 L of water media. Keywords: Red tilapia, probiotics, growth, survival rate.
