Abstract

Radiologic supportive examinations are still the primary choice in helping dentists establish a diagnosis and treatment plan. Radiography is the basis of diagnostic imaging in dentistry because the main focus in this field is the hard tissue of the teeth and the bone supporting the teeth. Dental radiographic examination is an examination that supports the establishment of diagnosis, making prognosis, treatment planning, and to evaluate the results of treatment that has been carried out on patients in the field of dentistry. To determine the decline in the visual quality of conventional periapical radiographs of dentistry through the indicator of the onset of brown spots after storage for 21 months in the Medical Record Archive Room of RSGM University of Jember. This study was conducted on 75 conventional periapical radiographs as samples stored in the Medical Record Archive Room of RSGM University of Jember with a temperature of 22°C-28°C using Air Conditioner for 24 hours, illuminated with 40 W lamp, and room humidity conditions of 40%-50%. The research data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. This study shows that the storage duration of conventional periapical radiographs affects the quality of the radiographs. There is a decrease in the visual quality of conventional periapical radiographs through the indicator of brown spots after 21 months of storage in the Medical Records Archive Room of RSGM University of Jember and there is a decrease in the visual quality of radiographs according to the increase in radiograph storage time.

Abstract

A lichenoid reaction is commonly finding in the oral cavity. A lichenoid reaction may be caused by systemic drugs. Among the drugs are antihypertensive drugs. The aim of this study is to know the treatment of patient with oral lichenoid reaction. Male patient came into RSGM Unsoed complaining of white patches on the right gums near 3rd molar three months ago. The white patches were painless and approximately 0.5 in diameter. Anamnesis was presenting patients is conducted and has been shown that they take 6 years of antihypertensive drugs and are prescribed by their own physician in the city of Semarang. The patient was then instructed on how to keep the oral hygiene and be evaluated two weeks later. Patients then having a normal tension and were off drugs for the following 2 weeks and got a slightly reduced lesion when it was carried out by control. Treatment of a lichenoid reaction can be done with communication, information, and education about his condition to the patient first. Another conservative treatment of topical corticosteroids is recommended when symptomatic symptoms occur. Treatment of patients with an asymptomatic reaction can be done with communication, information, and education to the patient and drug substitution if perceived as needed. Another treatment that can be taken is by using the topical corticosteroid if the lesion is symptomatic.

Abstract

Cleaning of removable dentures is an important step to prevent cross-contamination and contribute to the health of the patient, the lifespan of the dentures, and the patient's overall quality of life. Bad dentures have undesirable effects such as bad breath, stains and biofilms, and calculus accumulation in the dentures which can lead to denture stomatitis, angular cheilitis, and poor oral health. A dentist is responsible for educating the patient after denture insertion so it will increase the knowledge of the denture wearer how to maintain the cleanliness of the denture properly. There are two methods for cleaning removable dentures, mechanically and chemically. Mechanical cleaning is done by removing plaque using a brush or ultrasonic cleaning. Meanwhile, chemically using chemical cleaning products such as hypochlrorite, peroxide, neutral peroxide dengan enzyme, enzyme, or acids. Recommended method for cleaning dentures is a combination method combining mechanical and chemical method.

Abstract

The prevalence of caries among toddlers in Indonesia was about 81.5%. The type of caries that often occurs among toddlers was Early Childhood Caries (ECC). ECC was a condition where there was one or more tooth decay, the main cause was consuming milk or sugary drinks using a bottle until fall asleep too often which not balanced by oral hygiene maintenances. ECC could be prevented by the treatment of topical application of fluor. One of the preventive agents for topical application of fluor was Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). SDF was an invisible solution contains fluor ions and silver ions. SDF could inhibit the demineralization of hard tissues of teeth and carbohydrate metabolism by cariogenic bacteria into acids to prevent caries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and review Silver Diamine Fluoride as a preventive agent of Early Childhood Caries. We searched all the published literature from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The review for 16 articles starts from May 2021 until July 2021. Keywords used were “Silver Diamine Fluoride”, “Early Childhood Caries”, “Fluoride”, and “Early Childhood Caries Prevention”, with their combinations. The conclusion of this study was Silver Diamine Fluoride rated as the most effective preventing agent to Early Childhood Caries prevention.

Abstract

Alginate impression material is a material that is often used for impression tissue in the oral cavity, and can be one of the agents of infection transmission in dental practice. Microorganisms can adhere to the mold such as Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria. L. acidophilus were isolated from active caries and were considered as secondary invaders in the dental caries invasion process. The development of impression materials that have antibacterial capabilities needs to be done, one of which is by using materials derived from red algae (Kappaphycus alverezii). This plant contains a lot of alginate which is the main components of the cell wall, consisting of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium alginate salts. Synthesizing sodium alginate from red algae and analyzing the antibacterial activity of sodium alginate-based impression materials from red algae against L. acidophilus. Extraction of alginate from red algae using the acid method and conversion of alginic acid to sodium alginate by adding NaOH. The impression material is made with the addition of sodium alginate. Antibacterial activity test by well diffusion method. This study consisted of 3 groups, namely control (K), red algae sodium alginate extract (P1), and impression material with red algae sodium alginate extract (P2). Groups K, P1 and P2 had an average inhibition zone of 0 mm, 15.56 mm, 17.22 mm, respectively. Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney test showed significant differences between groups. Impression material based on sodium alginate extract from red algae has strong antibacterial activity against L. acidophilus.

Abstract

The prevalence of malocclusion and the need for orthodontic treatment in Indonesia is relatively very high. Orthodontic treatment that transmits mechanical forces to the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone cells can stimulate the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone remodeling. While this time, orthodontic treatment requires a long time, resulting in several adverse effects and discomfort. For this reason, a method that can accelerate orthodontic treatment is needed which aims to increase stability after active orthodontic treatment, to reduce the potential for relapse, and to accelerate retention time. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) stimulation is one of the methods that have this goal. This aim to study the stimulation mechanism of PEMF on the osteogenesis process of orthodontic tooth movement. Alveolar bone remodeling played an essential role in orthodontic tooth movement, is an active and dynamic process. The dynamic process depends on a balance between resorption and bone formation (osteogenesis). PEMF stimulation is a nonsurgical method that can promote osteogenesis through activation of Wnt signaling. Several studies showed that this method could accelerate retention time and orthodontic treatment. PEMF stimulated osteogenesis through activation of Wnt signaling in orthodontic tooth movement.

Abstract

Streptococcus viridans is one of the microorganisms found in root canals. The infection caused by S. viridans can cause an inflammatory response that will cause damage to the root canal. Infections in the root canal can be treated with root canal treatment. In the disinfection stage, a sterilization material is needed, one of which is Cresophene. However, certain people have an allergy to cresophene. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new drug options. Development of natural ingredients for alternative root canal sterilization drugs for patients who are hypersensitive to cresophene and have antibacterial effects with minimal side effects, one of which is essential oil extract of Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. Essential oil extract of C. xanthorrhiza Roxb contains xanthorrhizol, camphene and curcumin which are antibacterial compounds. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of temulawak essential oil extracts on the growth of S. viridans. Temulawak is extracted using the steam and air distillation method. Inhibition test was carried out using the disc diffusion method. The concentration of essential oil extract of C. xanthorrhiza Roxb used were 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The research data were statictically analyzed using SPSS with the Kruskal Wallis test. The average inhibition zone diameters at concentration of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% is 0 mm, 8,22 mm, 12,16 mm, and 16,1 mm. Data anaylisis using Kruskal Wallis showed a significance value of 0,00 (p<0,05), which means that it has a significant difference. Abstract

Orthodontic tooth movement occurs due to tissue remodeling. The success of orthodontic treatment is affected by the strength of periodontal health, oral hygiene, and orthodontics. Users of orthodontic appliances have to maintain oral hygiene to avoid periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and review enlargement gingiva in orthodontic user. This literature review was conducted by searching for journals, case reports and research with the keywords "gingival enlargement", "fixed orthodontics" and "orthodontic mechanics". Research articles and their full texts can be accessed over a 10- year starting from 2011 to 2021. Based on this literature study, poor oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment cause complications in periodontal tissues. Orthodontic appliances in oral cavity affect biofilm accumulation and bacterial colonization and patients with periodontal tissues are more susceptible to swelling and bleeding. Gingival treatment includes surgical and non-surgical gingivectomy. Surgical treatment are conventional surgery (scalpel), electrosurgery (cautery), diode laser and chemosurgery. Non- surgical treatment after orthodontic treatment was completed there was oral hygiene instructions, scaling and root planning, the using of a toothbrush and interproximal treatment and recall scheduled.
