Abstract

Burn disease caused by the fungus Ustilago scitaminea is an airborne pathogen whose spores can be carried by the wind, agricultural tools and people who wear the clothes they wear. The use of resistant varieties is a fairly effective control in controlling smut disease in sugarcane. This study aims to determine the resistance response of sugarcane varieties to smut disease on sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.). This research was conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Protection, Phytopathology Unit, Faculty of Agriculture and the Green House of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Halu Oleo, Kendari. The research design used a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 4 varietal treatments namely the Kidang Kencana variety (V1), the Bululawang variety (V2), the green sugarcane cultivar (V3) and the red sugarcane cultivar (V4). The results of this study indicated that disease incidence and disease severity had no significant effect at all observation times (7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 DAP). The longest incubation period with the incidence and severity of the disease was 0% in the V1 and V2 treatments.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of cow manure application on the growth and production of shallots. The research was conducted at the Field Laboratory of Experimental Gardens II, Faculty of Agriculture, Halu Oleo University, Kendari, at an altitude of 25 meters above sea level, from November to January 2022. The study used a one-factor Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of seven treatments. B0 (without treatment), B1 (cow manure 12.5 t ha-1), B2 (cow manure 15 t ha-1), B3 (cow manure 17.5 t ha-1), B4 (cow manure 20 t ha-1), B5 (cow manure 20 t ha-1), and B6 (cow manure 25 t ha-1). Each treatment was repeated four times so that there were 28 experimental units. Variables observed were plant height, number of leaves, number of tillers, number of tubers, plant fresh heavy, plant dry weight, tuber fresh heavy and productivity. The results showed that the dose of cow manure on the growth and yield of local Buton shallots had a significant effect on all growth and yield variables of the Buton local shallots. The best treatment was obtained at a dose of cow manure 25 t ha-1 with a plant height of 29.36 cm, number of leaves 15.00 strands, number of tillers 6.00 tillers, number of tubers 7.00, plant fresh heavy 24.62 g, weight dry plant 1.59 g, tuber fresh heavy 166.70, and productivity 1.67 t ha-1.

Abstract

Morphological characteristics of the soil contribute to the development of agricultural commodities. This study aims to identify the morphological characteristics of soil in cashew land use in Banga Village, Mawasangka District, Central Buton Regency. This research was conducted by survey method and field analysis on cashew land use. morphological observations were made on five soil profiles of cashew land use. The results of the study showed that the characteristics of soil morphology in the cashew center in Mawasangka District generally have a few percentage of rock outcrops and surface rocks (120 cm); reddish brown and dark brown soil color; clay and clay loam texture; medium and fine granular structure with a weak degree of development; soil consistency in dry conditions is soft, moist conditions are very loose, and wet conditions with slightly sticky adhesion and plasticity are plastic. Such soil characteristic conditions affect the stem circumference and height of cashew plants. Based on the results of the study, it is suggested that there needs to be a direction for cashew commodity management in the form of pruning, thinning, or replacing new plants accompanied by fertilization based on the morphological characteristics of the soil formed to obtain optimal productivity

Abstract

Ultisol still has the potential for the development of dry land agriculture. However, the utilization of Ultisol faces soil fertility constraints which can inhibit plant growth, especially bean plants, if not managed properly. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of manure and dosage on pH, organic C, total N, and yield of chickpea plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The research was conducted at Field Laboratory II, Faculty of Agriculture, Halu Oleo University, from November 2021 to January 2022. The research was arranged according to a Split Plot Design with a factorial pattern. The main plot consists of three levels, namely chicken manure (KA), goat manure (KK) and cow manure (KS). Subplots consisted of 4 levels, namely: without manure (D0), 2% manure (D1), 4% manure (D2) and 6% manure (D3). The results showed that chicken manure, goat manure and cow manure had an effect on soil pH, C-organic and N-total. The highest increase in soil pH was achieved in chicken manure treatment (6.3), followed by goat manure and the lowest in cow manure. The highest increase in C-organic occurred in the chicken manure treatment (2.07%), then goat manure and the lowest was cow manure. The highest increase in N-total occurred in the cow manure treatment (0.13%), then the chicken manure and the lowest was in the goat manure treatment. There was no significant interaction between manure and dosage on bean yields. Manure has an independent effect on the number of pods and pod weight. The highest number of pods and the heaviest weight were achieved in the KK treatment with 20.17 pods and 97.17 g weight, followed by the KA treatment with 17.00 pods and 75.75 g weight and in the KS treatment with 3.25 pods and weighs 12.17 g.
