Abstract

This case study aimed to investigate the use of the social media video application, TikTok, to support ten EFL teachers in Indonesia to develop videos for storytelling with their students. During the emergency remote teaching, these teachers found difficulty in designing learning materials easy to share on various online platforms. In this study, a two-week training program consisting of face-to-face and online sessions was conducted to facilitate the teachers to explore TikTok affordances and tell stories in the form of TikTok’s Duet. The data were collected from TikTok videos produced during the program and the teachers’ pre- and post-training reflective notes. The findings show the teachers’ shifted view of TikTok as non-educational entertainment to an educational platform that could facilitate interactive and interesting storytelling with students. The teachers were aware that while the short duration of the TikTok video was beneficial for easy sharing and engagement with students, it affected the length of the unfolding stages of the story. In creating a TikTok video for storytelling, the teachers found modifying original stories into a one-minute interactive video challenging. More support is thus required to provide teachers with pedagogical, technological, and language content knowledge that allows them to develop teaching resources relevant to their student’s language learning needs and social and economic backgrounds.

Abstract

Understanding listening materials is perceived as the most challenging aspect of language learning by many EFL University students. They face difficulties in recognizing English words, phrases, pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence complexity, compounded by the rapid speech rate of native speakers. Addressing these challenges, this study explores the use of digital materials that require students to analyse, evaluate and make informed judgments based on listening content, thereby nurturing higher order thinking skills. A qualitative case study was conducted, involving the collection of comprehensive data from course syllabi, lecturers and students. A total of sixty-one university students enrolled intermediate listening course, along with two listening lecturers, were actively engaged to enrich the data. The results shows that the use of digital materials, particularly the e-module, has proven to be effective. Students’ responses indicate that the e-module effectively facilitates critical thinking, improves reflective ability, and encourages motivation. Moreover, the e-module features, including well-defined learning outcomes, authentic materials, scaffolded learning activities, engaging multimedia elements, collaborative features, and opportunities for reflection and self-assessment, collectively contribute to foster critical thinking skills and motivation among students.

Abstract

The motivation for this study arises from the potential of gamification, particularly the integration of game-based platforms like Kahoot!, to enhance active communicative language use within the classroom. The research aims to investigate the impact of implementing gamification based on SOLO taxonomy's relational level on the Kahoot! application on active participation, discipline, and learning outcomes in the context of English language learning. This study employs a descriptive research methodology, involving observations, interviews, and assessments, with a participant group comprising 35 nursing program students. Descriptive analysis reveals that gamification within the SOLO taxonomy framework positively influences students' active engagement and discipline, although there are fluctuations in their learning outcomes. Students express enthusiasm for utilizing the Kahoot! application for English learning, but they encounter occasional connectivity issues that hinder problem-solving activities. Consequently, the integration of technology is a promising approach for enhancing English language skills, with a reliable internet connection being a critical factor for success when using the Kahoot! platform.

Abstract

Teaching and learning vocabulary is somewhat troublesome for EFL learners, especially Indonesian learners. At this point, the majority of vocabulary teaching in the classroom still uses a traditional approach, meanwhile the involvement of ICT in educational environments is thought to promote the advancement of learners' expertise and skills. This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of using media based-technology especially Duolingo to increase learners’ English vocabulary mastery. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method, a case study as research design. This research was conducted in one of the private schools in Malang, East Java with 31 students as the participants.  The results of this research showed that the majority of learners believe that learning a foreign language, especially its vocabulary, through Duolingo is straightforward because the vocabulary material is  relevant to everyday life. This is supported by several findings regarding Duolingo facilities, which includes easy access, user-friendly, and engaging vocabulary games and activities that enable learners to feel more motivated and enthusiastic in learning English. This study implies that Duolingo is an effective tool for supporting learners in learning foreign languages, especially mastering new English vocabulary.

Abstract

English textbooks are a valuable tool for promoting the development of 21st century skills. Meanwhile, multimodal texts in textbooks are employed by authors to convey meaning through verbal and visual modes, thus necessitating the adoption of multimodal analysis as the most efficacious method for its elucidation. Regrettably, there exists a dearth of literature concerning the application of this approach for analyzing textbooks. To fill this gap, the study examined 21st century skills in an English textbook. This study used content analysis with multimodal social semiotic approach. The subject of the study was an English textbook “English for Nusantara” for the seventh-grade students. The result shown that critical thinking and problem-solving skill was the most frequent type. However, the study did not find any mention of media literacy, and there were only a few instances of economic literacy and global awareness. It is suggested that future revisions should include them. Moreover, English teachers are urged to actively participate in the process of textbook selection and augment the instructional materials with supplementary resources to mitigate any inadequacies of the textbook.

Abstract

Nowadays, technological developments are really very fast so it requires students to be able to follow them. Like what was done during a pandemic, learning was done online so lecturers had to prepare the material properly by using internet facilities for teaching. Unfortunately, learning is still considered to have many problems during the pandemic, both in terms of material and media used, resulting in a learning loss. This study highlights the development of video-based digital content learning which are integrated into learning. The method used in this study was research and development. The steps to develop the media were applied Four-D model by Thiagarajan and Semmel. The video-based digital content learning presents interactive learning in the form of videos integrated with learning management system, ELITA. The media has been tested on 25 students at Universitas Tidar during the covid-19 pandemic and showed good acceptance. The results of this study indicate that video-based digital content is feasible and effective to be used in supporting student motivation and learning outcomes. This implies that digital content learning is of value to be used and applied in online learning for teaching university students.
