Abstract

Diazinon is the most commonly used pesticide in Indonesia. It may increase the production of free radicals that triggers the lipid peroxidation process which will produce the final product, MDA, which can damage cells and tissues, especially the kidneys. Neem gum with its high polysaccharide is a good antioxidant agent to neutralize free radicals. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of neem gum administration to prevent the increase in kidney MDA levels of wistar rats induced by diazinon. Thirty wistar rats were divided into 6 groups, K0 (given cornoil), K1 (induced DZN 40 mg/kgBW), groups P1, P2, P3, and P4, administered with neem gum as a drinking water at a dose 3.75 g/kgBW, 7.5 g/kgBW, 15 g/kgBW, and 30 g/kgBW and induced by DZN 40 mg/kgBW. The treatment was carried out for 8 days, in which diazinon induction and neem gum solution were administered simultaneously. The average renal MDA levels are K0=20.85±1.10; K1=26.98±5.87; P1=26.84±3.75; P2=21.43±3.44; P3=20.23±3.27; P4=21.99±1.70. One Way ANOVA test showed a significant difference (p<0.05). The LSD posthoc test showed a significant difference in the treatment groups P2, P3, and P4 compared to the K1 group (p<0.05). This shows that the neem gum solution at a dose of 7.5 g/kgBW, 15 g/kgBW, and 30 g/kgBW can prevent the increase of kidney MDA level in wistar rats induced by diazinon. Abstract

Hookworm infection is a disease that is included in the neglected tropical disease. Hookworm infection is suffered by many plantation workers who are closely related to the soil in daily life. Immune response in hookworm-infected individuals will experience disorders, especially in eosinophilia, mastocytosis, and IgE stimulation. It is therefore important to know the immune response to hookworm infections in plantation workers. In this study, eosinophilia was calculated on peripheral blood smears and counts of IL-4 and Ig-E levels by ELISA. The results showed an increase in eosinophil levels from blood samples of patients and a significant increase in IL-4 and IgE levels based on the results of statistical analysis. Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is an endemic infectious disease in Indonesia. This disease is caused by dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes aegypti as a vector. Vector control is an important approach to control DHF. Citrus suhuinensis contains active compounds such as saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and D-limonene that can kill Ae aegypti larvae. This study aimed to determine the effectivity and lethal dose of C. suhuinensis peel extract against Ae aegypti larva. This was an experimental study using randomized control-group posttest design on Ae aegypti instar III and IV larvae which were divided into 10 groups, i.e., positive control, negative control, 8 treatment groups of serial doses of 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1 %. Each group consisted of 25 larvae. Observations on the larvae were conducted after 24 and 48 hours of treatment. The results showed that C. suhuinensis peel extract has larvicide effect as shown by the Lethal Dose value, i.e., LD50, LD95 and LD99 were 5.77, 9.34 and 11.39%, respectively. In conclusion, the C. suhuinensis peel extract has potential as an Ae. aegypti larvacide.

Abstract

A positive assessment of self-esteem and self-efficacy will motivate, especially female students, to care about their body image, reduce the risk of eating disorders, and in turn aspire them to become healthy role-models. This study aimed to examine the influence of those variables on becoming healthy role-models. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 to 189 female students at the Faculty of Medicine, Tanjungpura University. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test and multivariate logistic regression test. Self-esteem (p: 0.003; OR: 2.638) and self-efficacy (p: 0.000; OR: 5.752) had a significant relationship with body image, and body image had a significant relationship with the risk of eating disorders (p: 0.000; OR: 4,609). Regression analysis showed that self-esteem (p: 0.016) and self-efficacy (p: 0.024) are the variables that affected becoming of a role model. Moreover, it is found that self-efficacy had an indirect influence on eating disorders according to the body image with a coefficient of 2.45. Good self-acceptance (high self-esteem and self-efficacy) through positive self-compassion likely reduces the risk of eating disorders and improves the body image. The combination of these aspects will ultimately increase the students’ motivation to promote healthy behavior to others and thus become healthy role-models. Abstract

Pasung (restrain) towards people with schizophrenia has yet to recede from being a complex problem in Jember, East Java. One of many aspects of pasung that has not been widely studied is the caregiving burden in the post-pasung period. This research aimed to comprehend the meaning-making of the caregiving phenomenon as experienced by the families of people with schizophrenia during the patients’ post-pasung period in Jember. This research utilizing the interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) recruited 11 participants (7 caregivers of people with schizophrenia and 4 community mental health nurses) who were purposively sampled and underwent semistructured interviews from November to December 2019. Two themes emerged in this study namely the experience of the post-pasung caregivers and triangulation with the community mental health nurses which consisted of 8 and 3 subthemes, respectively. Post-pasung caregiving burden experienced by families in this study consisted of subjective, objective, and iatrogenic burdens. Compared with the pasung period, the burden was lighter both for objective and subjective caregiving burden. The most dominating burden is the subjective burdens including apprehensiveness, stigma from the family and the society, and advice from external parties that were against the process of recovery and the objective burden came in the form of the caregiver’s significant health problems. Caregivers made various efforts supported by the provision of accessible and holistic health services as well as interdisciplinary coordination to ease the burden. This study indicates the diversity of the caregiving burden of post-pasung people with schizophrenia. This diversity suggests that interventions aimed at lightening the burden should be carefully selected based on the actual needs of the caregivers. Abstract

Morbus Hansen or leprosy is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae. This disease attacks the peripheral nerves and other organs or systems in the body. M. leprae attacks the stratum corneum so that it makes the skin rough, scaly and cracked or what is called xerosis. The appearance of xerosis is due to mechanisms that contribute to decreased hydration of the stratum corneum and defects in sweat gland function. Prevention of damage to the integrity of the skin (xerosis) in leprosy patients can use olive oil, vaseline, coconut oil, and olive oil. This case report was conducted to determine the effect of massage with olive oil and scrub in overcoming skin problems in leprosy subjects. Providing a physiotherapy program at the Donorejo Leprosy Rehabilitation Unit in Jepara, using physiotherapy modalities in the form of massage with olive oil and scrubs. After therapy was carried out on the subject by giving massage with olive oil and scrub, there was a significant decrease in the ODSS scale value from an initial value of two to a value of one. The results showed that massage with olive oil and scrub was effective in improving the skin of leprosy patients which could be used as an alternative intervention in skin care for leprosy sufferers to prevent further defects.

Abstract

Anaemic caused by Iron deficiency can be affected by a lack of vitamin C. Vitamin C can reduce ferrous iron (Fe3+) to ferrous (Fe2+) in the small intestine so that it is easily absorbed. Kombucha tea is a functional drink known to the public for a long time and provides health benefits. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of kombucha rosella tea against increasing haemoglobin levels in mice (Mus musculus) anaemic. The type of research is true experimental with a pre-post test randomized control group design. Treatment with four treatments and three repetitions. The sample from this study was mice (Mus musculus), female, 2-3 months, weighing 20-25 as many as 24 heads. Administration of kombucha rosella tea in anaemic mice at different doses (0.36 ml / 20 g BB, 0.55 ml / 20 g BB and 0.73 ml / 20 g BB) for 14 days. Giving kombucha rosella tea can increase haemoglobin levels in the blood of mice (Mus musculus) anaemic. The optimal dose of use of kombucha rosella tea against an increase in haemoglobin levels in the blood of anaemic mice is 0.73 ml / 20 g BB. It is necessary to conduct further research on using kombucha rosella tea in human subjects to obtain further substantiation of the benefits of kombucha rosella tea as a treatment therapy.
