Abstract

Village democratization has emerged in Indonesia in line with the implementation of regional autonomy policy. In fact, village democratization facing some constraints. One of the serious problems is the blank of political education or civic education as an impact of floating mass policy in rural area, during the New Order era. Besides that, the state apparatus seem not too serious to encourage village democratization, from the beginning the policy has been declared. The socialization process in rural area is very weak. At the implementation stages, formulation of the regional regulation are very rigid. It seems that the state apparatus feel more comprehend about the custom and interest of village people, than the villagers themselves. In this case, the state apparatus seems too arrogant. Basically, the prospect of village democratization is in the village people hand. The support and encouragement from the pro-democratic society, id est intellectuals, academicians, researchers, journalists, NGOs activist, mass organizations, executive and legislative can however, accelerate the practice of village democratization.

Abstract

This article introduces the elementary concepts, such as feminist perspective, sex, gender, and gender relations. Sex is a biological fact. The individual's quality and capacity and the roles derived from them, are difined along sex lines. During a long history, this perspective has been accepted in society. The dichotomy of ideal roles for both males and females, was the manifestation of such a statusquo.Criticisms to the division of quality and roles was based on the reason that the ideal roles was not a result of natural process, but of social processes and cultural transformations, under the dominant male culture. Gender has also been used for deconstructing the statusquo. Discourse and counter-discourse processes has been directed towards deconstruction both at the ideological and behavioral levels.

Abstract

There are two perspectives of female circumcision among scholars. First, female circumcision is a matter of tradition that has been legalized by religious interpretations, especially Islam. Essentially, Islam does not obligate women to practice it. The practice could be accepted as far as it doesn't not destroy the functions of woman sex organ. Second, female circumcision is a tradition that has been legalized by men powers for satisfying themselves in sexual performance as well as in social relations. Female genital mutilation, which means removing the clitoris, labia minora and majora of the female sex organ, is the practice to make males having more pleasure in sexual relationship. Here, the objective of such practice is to insult 'female dignity' and to show that females should obey males domination. Islam prohibits the latter practice.

Abstract

In the past, the role of a woman was more of bringing up children and giving company to her husband than anythingelse, but because of the economic changes and education, there are now many house wives who, in the recent days, do not only function as household managers, but they also take on careers outside the home. The perception of the community on women who work outside their families is also becoming more permissive. Generally, women havegot wide opportunities to improve on them selves. Even with this however, there are still internal obstacles which tend to hinder this improvement of women. Various efforts have so far been made to assist women in optimizing themselves according to their individual potentialities. For that matter therefore, Prijono Tjiptoherijanto explains the necessity of improving on the quality of women, either through the family or through other institutional means.

Abstract

Based on a survey of 325 street vendors in Yogyakarta Special Region that was conducted by the Population Studies Center of Gadjah Mada University, this study would like to analyze the contribution of income and prospect of the informal sector on household economy. It was found that earning in the informal sector constitutes the source of household income. Most street vendors said that income in the informal sector would help them improve on the household economic status. Working as a street vendor is a good choice. It has a good prospect and can be developed in the future. This research has also shown that the informal sector is capable to survive in the crisis. Caused by more flexibility, the number of people absorbed in the informal sector are even able to earn higher incomes. This implies that providing access to informal sector with such a high commitment of both government and non- governmental institutions, it is one important policy in helping them have better conditions in a economic household. Accordingly, it will in turn have an impact on increasing the economic scale of the informal sector.
