Abstract

One of the extern factors that caused the socio-cultural change in a society is migration. How the migration process influenced the alteration process were so much influenced by the area of origin. The impact of international migration to the area of origin were influenced by the new value inter relation brought by migrants such as the physical, socio-economic and socio cultural aspect. The research results with an anthropological approach, supported with survey data in one of the sub districts in East Flores, showed that the strength of traditional value in controlling migrant behaviors existed through formalization with various social control systems. This system could eliminate the negative impact of migration, even though the condition could cause a society dynamic block. The physical condition of the research area that could not be developed also made it more hampered. Hence, modernization and the area development process could not be spurred with international migration.

Abstract

Every society collectively develops a certain system or institution which can be used to solve various problems in their life. The rural Javanese society has developed an activity to assist one another, either in the form of service, goods or money. This kind of activity is a social security system that is very important to them. This activity holds two meanings. First, it is a tool to reduce the burden of others, and the second is it creates and enhances the social solidarity of the group. In this context, helping one another has changed the feeling of insecurity to security among group of people. During a social, economic, and cultural transformation process in the Javanese rural areas, it turns out that this model of assisting one another is not always successful. On the contrary, it has created the feeling of insecurity among groups in society, especially the poor.

Abstract

This study tries to investigate the infant mortality rate and life expectancy based on the 1990 Population Census, and to observe its variations among provinces that take place in the urban as well as in the rural areas of Indonesia. As a whole, the estimate of infant mortality rate and the expectation of life based on the 1990 Population Census is 69 per one thousand life births and 60 years for both urban and rural areas. The variation in the rural areas is larger than in the urban regions.During the period from 1980 to 1990 the infant mortality rate in Indonesia decreased by 4.29 percent annually. If this rate continued to increase till the end of 2000, the infant mortality rate by this time would be 45 per one thousand life births, whereas the expectation of life at birth would become 68 years. Many determinants of infant mortality rates should be taken into account to reduce the figures, particularly the coverage and the quality of the public health service which directly influences the child survival, as well as other determinants which indirectly, yet simultaneously, influence it.

Abstract

This study is conducted in three provinces, West Java, South Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara, which represent different cultural background, using secondary data namely marital verification forms (MVF). From methodological point of view this study finds that MVF can be used as data sources in analysing age of marriage inspiteof using population census or national surveys. The result of previous studies have not been confirmed by this study. Mean age at first marriage in West Java is not the lowest, but is West Nusa Tenggara. In addition South Sulawesi is always the highest. Cultural backgrounds such as dowery in South Sulawesi which is the highest among the provinces and the tradition of delopement in West Nusa Tenggara are very important in explaining the variation of age at first marriage. However education has also an important role as independent variable for age at first marriage.

Abstract

The various forms of crises that have occurred at national and regional scale have not yet been fully felt in the dry areas, particularly in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta Special Province. Interesting, these rural dry areas have been very resistant and flexible in facing the impact of the economic crisis. The major factor that has made this possible is self-reliance, which was triggered by the low degree of dependence on other places for various necessities. Most of the places provide them for themselves. As far as providing basic necessities are concerned, the rural community has not yet shown symptoms of anxiety. Some saving has actually been carried out, but there is not yet any sufficient evidence of drastic decline in quality and quantity. From the beginning of the economic recession until today, saving for general (public) benefit, especially in social issues – (communalism), which is usually difficult to establish, could be easily accepted with no resistance from the community. The prospect of the rural economic sector of the dry lands can be divided into two broad categories, that is the survivor sector, and the inferior sector. The survivor sector comprises of economic activities that will continue to persist even if there is no growth, like agriculture and animal husbandry. The inferior sector on the other hand, include those activities, which are not very effective in addressing the economic crisis, and even potentially risk vanishing, like industry, trade and service sectors. The biggest impact is however, more felt in the non- economic sector, particularly those to do with services like health and family planning.

Abstract

The number of norplant users had increased over time, the problem was that many women use norplant incorrectly. Some of them used it longer than five years without removal and some other women used double norplant. Also, there were some women who used one set of norplant with more or less than 6 norplant matchsticks as required. These problems would certainly bring negative effects on women's health and, in turn, their economic condition. At national level, the large number of misusers would cause a failure of the family planning program.Non-compliance behavior among norplant users was caused by many factors. Poor quality of care, especially providers' incompetence, inadequate information, and inadequate mechanisms to encourage continuity were found as major causes. The clients themselves had a contribution in the misuse of norplant. The clients had their own beliefs about health and sickness and they also tend to be influenced by the behavior of their neighbors who were misusing norplant. The clients awareness about the importance of information was also very low and It caused the lack of knowledge about the arrangements of using norplant.

Abstract

Abstract

The objective of the study is to comprehend how the practice of Pemale Genital Cutting (PGC), or 'sunat perempuan' in local term, reflects a social contruction of sexuality in Indonesia society, and how it relates to sexual and reproductive health. The study was conducted during 2002 in Yogyakarta and Madura, considering that both areas have distinct sociocultural contexts. The study reveals that PGC, as MGC, is socially meant 'to Islamize' member of society. The male religious leaders' dominance and rigid interpretations of Islamic holy books may be conducive for male-biased sexual behaviors and harmfulprocedures of PGC among Madurese. Among Javanese, by contrast, PGC is known as a part of court tradition, to be connected with a puberty rite which articulates symbolic actions. As opened social discourse is more accepted among Javanese, PGC is easily forgotten. Nonetheless, the meaning of PGC as a puberty rite has served as a basis for gender divisions among Javanese todays.
