Abstract

Indiscipline among students in Nigerian schools remained a source of great concern to stakeholders as it had caused a lot of mental, emotional and physical damage in the society. This research investigated the causes of indiscipline among students as viewed by primary school teachers in Nigeria. The research also examined the influence of gender, school locale, years of teaching experience and educational attainment on the respondents’ views. In addition, this research employed a descriptive survey method. A total of 200 primary school teachers in Nigeria participated in the research. They responded to a researcher-designed questionnaire entitled ‘Causes of Indiscipline Questionnaire’ (CIQ). Then, the psychometric properties of the instrument were established and the collected data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Furthermore, the findings showed that the causes of indiscipline among students as viewed by primary school teachers in Nigeria were societal, governmental, parental, school and students factors respectively. In view of the findings, it is recommended that government and school administrators should formulate policies in schools to curb indiscipline among students.

Abstract

This research investigated the influence of single parenting on emotional development of primary school students as viewed by Nigerian primary school teachers. A descriptive survey designed was adopted to draw 200 primary school teachers. One research question was raised and three null hypotheses were respectively postulated to guide the research at 0.05 level of significance. In addition, data analysis was done using t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Furthermore, the findings revealed that low self-esteem was the most influencing emotional development of primary school students in Ilorin metropolis. The findings also revealed that there was no significant difference in the influence of single parenting on the emotional development of primary school students in terms of gender and qualification. It is recommended that teachers of students from single parents should be more sensitive to their emotional needs and always be ready to assist them. Moreover, counsellors should collaborate with teachers and parents to minimize the negative influence of single parenting. Teachers are suggested to be more sensitive and willing to assist students whenever they have problems at home. Single parents are suggested to provide more quality time with their children to avoid them performing negative behaviors. Parents are suggested to maintain stable home by living together to enhance their children emotional development.

Abstract

Writing is one of the subjects taught at school. Through poetry writing, students’ imaginative writing skills can be improved. The purpose of this research is to describe the improvement in poetry writing skills and students’ activity using Prezi. This research employed a classroom action research method conducted in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages, namely: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this research were fifth-grade students of a primary school in Inderalaya consisting of 13 male students and 16 female students. The instrument of the data collection was a poetry writing test. The results of the three cycles in this research were 44.44%, 78.57%, and 89.28% respectively. It showed an increase in poetry writing skills of fifth-grade primary school students after the use of Prezi media in learning.  Hence, it can be concluded that Prezi was an appropriate media to teach poetry writing. It is recommended that Prezi could be used as an alternative media to teach writing in the primary school.

Abstract

This research aims at comparing the self-efficacy of primary school (SD – Sekolah Dasar) teachers who have taken teacher training program (PPG – Program Pelatihan Guru) on mathematics teaching and those who have not, which was seen from the personal belief sub-factors in teaching mathematics and the expected mathematics teaching outcomes. This research employed quantitative method with comparative research type to 198 samples. The data were analysed through T-test using SPSS. The result showed that there was no significant self-efficiency differences between primary school teachers who have taken PPG on mathematics teaching and those who have not. The results of this research indicated that self-efficacy was an important variable in pedagogical competence as it could influence the way teachers manage the classroom to attain maximum students’ achievement.
