Celt: A Journal of Culture, English Language Teaching & Literature is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal, published biannually in the months of July and December with p-ISSN (printed): 1412-3320 & e-ISSN (electronic/online): 2502-4914 It presents articles around the area of culture, English language teaching and learning, linguistics, and literature. Contents include analysis, studies, applications of theories, research reports, and materials development. It is firstly published in December 2001. Ever since 2005 its manuscripts could be read online through www.journalcelt.com. By the year 2016, it launched its OJS (Open Journal System) through https://journal.unika.ac.id/ index.php/celt and from 2017 it is recorded in Crossref’s https://doi.org/10.24167 and in https://doaj.org/toc/2502-4914. Abstract

The job of a secretary is probably one of the most popular vacancies advertised in Indonesian mass-media. Many profit and non-profit organizations seekfor professional secretaries because of the central role the profession holds. A secretary is an assistant to her employer, and oftentimes she becomes not only lithe hands" but also lithe eyes" of her employer, indicating the wide range of work a secretary carries out. Despite of the heavy workload of the profession. there are still many female undergraduates who do not hesitant to begin or make a career as a secretary. Perhaps that is because basically the job requires administrative skills, which can be simply acquired through a lot of practices. Responding to the phenomenon, universities that run English Department have offered an English for Secretary (hereinafter referred to as EFS) course. Unfortunately, to date there have not been many books on EFS available in Indonesia. As a result, EFS teachershave to create the syllabus and prepare the materials themselves or use the old version of any EFS book available.Factually, the EFS syllabus should be created based on an actual and careful needs analysis so that the students taking the course would enjoy maximum benefit. This article focuses on designing a syllabus based on interviews with professional secretaries. Hence this article will discuss the importance of needs analysis, the structured interviews, the result of the interviews, and the proposed syllabus. There were 20 professional secretaries intervieweed about the secretarial job description, skills, and behaviour and attitudes. The result is hitherto a secretary stillgoes to the folloWing routine: handling callers, corresponding, filling, organizing meeting, and scheduling, which are relevant to the essential skills such as communication, computer and language skills; and pertinent to the behavior and attitudes a secretary should have: reliability, fast working, honesty, and autonomous learning. Thus, the planned EFS syllabus will accommodate what the interviewees have noted.

Abstract

: English in Indonesia is still as a foreign language. Yet, there has been a growing need within Indonesian society to raise the children in bilingual or multilingual context by having English as a second language within the families. This article is a report on the research of two nuclear Indonesian families who stimulate their children to use English as the second language. The researched has been done through three procedures, i.e. recording, observation, and interview. In stimulating their children in using English, the parents used several ways, like prompting and consequating behaviours. Yet, the mix of two languages in using those ways made the results of this research unique and special. This article reports about the ways used by the parents. It is found that parents apply prompting but they only apply imitation for consequanting behaviours. It is also found some unique phenomenon that occurred in stimulating the children to use English language.

Abstract

Ambon has experienced a social disaster in the form of a conflict that occurred in 1999-2004. Many attempts were made to overcome it. Basically, the Ambonese people have unique traditions and cultural symbols that can be a means of uniting them, but small emotional flareups still appear which cause further friction and conflict, therefore revitalizing the local cultural values is important. The revitalization of Ambonese cultural values and traditional symbols is important. Currently, the gap in communication and understanding of noble values, local wisdom,  and the meaning of cultural symbols is the main obstacle in efforts to use it for reconciliation. This research reports the aim of finding a strategy for revitalizing cultural values and cultural symbols in Ambon, as one way to promote sustainable peace and rebuild Ambon's identity as a city that is full of local philosophy and cultural wisdom. The method used is a qualitative method with post-disaster management analysis. The research finds that a revitalization process strategy for reconciliation can be done by means of (1) Building integration of local wisdom and culture in public space, and (2) internalizing the local values and the marking of cultural symbols.

Abstract

Since the turn of the twentieth centU/y. sophisticated technologies have marked the revolutionary era of human beings. The rate of the progress is so incredible that 110 one is able to predict what other changes may be happening. Despite being late. ELTworld has slowly begun to change by adopting media technologies in teaching. During the course of the change, however; the practicioners of the technologies pose a dilemma in the level of implementatioll. Oil the one hand, they offer grand opportunities to create a brighter future, but on the other hand, they bring with them challenges that may prevent the teacher practicionersfrom adopting thelll il/lal/guage teaching practices. Thus, it is within this perspective that this paper is trying to discuss by viewing them from what the opportunities alld the challenges it poses by offer inga way outfrom it. This paper will mainly be a reflective discllssion ill nature, as it tries to open lip those m'o opposing sides alld underlines the potentially remaining problems that may intact if they are not coped with ill a proper manner.

Abstract

This paper deals with Scrooge's characterization in Dickens' A Christmas Carol who is a rich, cold-hearted, miserly, misanthropy, and an anti Christmas old man. He experiences a gradual character development that comes from his awareness of his bad character and from the ghosts and other characters after seeing the visions of his past, present and future shown by the ghosts on Christmas Eve. Yet on Christmas Day, he becomes an altered old man, by being a kind, warm, generous old man to everyone, especially to the poor and a person who honors Christmas and has Christmas spirit in his heart. This study uses the formalistic approach to analyze Scrooge's character development, by focusing on A Christmas Carol's text. In studying about Scrooge's characterization, Charles Dickens' message, namely charity is also proven. With charity, Dickens shows that people can especially help the poor and make them happy.

Abstract

Sense of politeness in language is an important aspect in human interaction. Since it is dealing with society,this makes politeness something flexible based on place and time. It means that what is meant by word "polite" is different from one place to another place or even politeness in a particular area changes from time to time. One of literary works that gives a clear description about a society including sense of politeness is Margaret Mitchell's story of the Old South Gone With the Wind. Though it is an old story we still are able to learn something from it about sense of politeness. Gone With the Wind novel took old southern United States society in American civil war era (1861-1865) as the setting of the story, which still adopted patriarchy system. This society had a tendency to clearly polarize men and women's role in the family and society, in which the women should be kind, polite, and gracious. While on the other hand, men, who held the superior position in the society. could express their feeling more freely. This politeness changes when the Civil War comes through this process, there are many changes in the society that influence the rapport. From the beginning when women must speak soft, gracious, and, politely, until the coming of the war, in which they have to leave all their old status as the inferior people. And the last is when the men returned back to their family.

Abstract

The audacious declaration “Big for nothing” in Kevin Echeruo’s propaganda poster during the Nigerian civil war offers illumination to the forgotten undercurrents that drove the 30-month war which in the last fifty years has contributed to the setting of agenda for separatist polemics in the Nigeria nation-state. Using largely the iconographic approach to visual description and interpretation, this study examines the cultural codes and representational conventions that inform contemporary artistic representational style as a cultural practice. The illustration not only approximates to one of the early visual indicators on the divisive national challenge rendered in highly coded visual and linguistic rhetoric of hegemonic power struggle by the elite class, but also a significant metaphor of contemporary frustration on nationhood and nationality for most Nigerians. Accordingly, this article broaches on the parameters of patriotism, nationality and self-determination to posit that the illustration represents the extremes of citizen dissatisfaction couched in a radical artistic narrative of a caricature. It submits that the strength of national allegiance and cohesiveness is a function of the reciprocity to its citizens.

Abstract

This descriptive-qualitative case study aims to (1) identify the values of Buginese/Makasaresse local wisdoms that shape the learning process of Hasanuddin University students attending the Writing2 (MBI2) subject in the even semester, 2014; (2) find out which of the local wisdoms that strongly shape the student-centred learning (SCL) process in the Writing II class. The study focused on students classroom interaction. Data were collected from classroom observations, questionnaires, interviews and teachers note on the learning process in classroom. This study found that what is thought as Buginese or Makassarese local wisdoms can both support and inhibit the SCL process in MBI2. Such local wisdoms include respect to older people and mutual help

Abstract

This study aims at describing the reduplication of Mongondow and its meanings. The method used in this research is descriptive method in taxonomy that is an elaboration by classifying elements of language according to hierarchical relationship. Data were obtained through primary and secondary data sources. Primary data were collected through interviews with five informants chosen from Tutuyan region, of Tombolikat village, who are active speakers of Bolaang Mongondouw language. Secondary data were gathered through a text study. The results show that the formation of Mongondow words can be done by reduplication, either whole or complete reduplication and partial reduplication consisting of reduplication of deletion on the word base, reduplication of initial syllable and affixed reduplication. The reduplication of Mongondow language has the following meanings: (1) to declare uncertain plurality, (2) to declare reciprocal meaning, (3) to declare collective and distributive meaning, (3) to declare command or advice, (4) to declare the tool, (5) to declare the place (6) to declare about superlative, (7) to declare about more quality, and (8) to state the meaning of an action done with pleasure or comfort.

Abstract

One of the responsibilities of higher educational institutions is to enhance students' character building and soft skills. The disjuncture between institutions' expectation in educating their students and students' perceptions on the benefit of their teaching and learning processes necessitates a paradigm shift in the college curriculum. Given that universities prepare students to be an individual and a member of a society, college curriculum, therefore, should enhance students' experience both academically and nonacademically. This paper attempts to propose a modest and brief preliminary proposal for curricular change for English Departments in Indonesia. The proposal includes the proposal for five elements of curricular revision - purpose, learner, content, instructional processes, and evaluation and assessment.
