Celt: A Journal of Culture, English Language Teaching & Literature is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal, published biannually in the months of July and December with p-ISSN (printed): 1412-3320 & e-ISSN (electronic/online): 2502-4914 It presents articles around the area of culture, English language teaching and learning, linguistics, and literature. Contents include analysis, studies, applications of theories, research reports, and materials development. It is firstly published in December 2001. Ever since 2005 its manuscripts could be read online through www.journalcelt.com. By the year 2016, it launched its OJS (Open Journal System) through https://journal.unika.ac.id/ index.php/celt and from 2017 it is recorded in Crossref’s https://doi.org/10.24167 and in https://doaj.org/toc/2502-4914. Abstract

One of the most important uses of technology is that it makes it easy for instructors to incorporate multimedia into their teaching. There are different multimedia tools. Three of the most popular ones are visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic in which students take in information. Some students are visual learners, while others are auditory or kinaesthetic learners. While students use all of their senses to take in information, they seem to have preferences in how they learn best. In order to help students learn, teachers need to teach as many of these preferences as possible. Therefore, teachers can incorporate these multimedia tools in their curriculum activities so that students are able to succeed in their classes. This study is an analysis of multimedia tools for Iranian EFL students. Over 100 students complete a questionnaire to determine if their multimedia tools are auditory, visual, or kinaesthetic. The purpose of this study is to increase faculty awareness and understanding of the impact of multimedia tools on the teaching process. A review of the literature along with analysis of the data will determine how multimedia tools affect the teachingprocess.

Abstract

This study tried to reveal the ideology and the process of ideational meaning behind the advertisements found in a female magazine, Cosmopolitan. The analysis of ideology was based on four basic assumptions. They are beauty, prestige, health and others. In analyzing the processes of the ideational meaning, the writer used Halliday theory that discusses about six types of processes. They are material (doing/event) process , mental (thinking/sensing/feeling) process,relational (attributive/identifying) process, behavioral process, verbal process and existential process. The results show that the advertisements are dominated by beauty ideology (45,5%) and relational process (41,4%). Based on the result, it is clear that as a female magazine, Cosmopolitan presents advertisements that offer beauty products/services. Moreover, relational process (identifying) is used more because the producer and the advertiser are aware that they cannot compel the consumers to buy the products/ services offered. The use of the process is aimed to show the products/ services that will raise the curiosity of the consumers and to persuade the consumers to buy the products/services.

Abstract

Writing skill has been considered the most difficult language skill to master, and teaching the skills has also been not simple. Part of a research report on teaching writing in English at a senior high school in Surabaya, this paper is aimed to demonstrate that English teachers at the school are skillful and resourceful in teaching writing. With reference to 11 elements or strategies of writing instruction discussed in Graham and Perin (2007), five English teachers at die school were interviewed. The interview guide includes 24 questions centered on the 11 elements. Interview results show that the teachers make vise of most elements or strategies in their English classes. The teachers explained that such strategies as collaborative writing, sentence combining, prewriting, inquiry activities, and study of models are conducted frequently in the classroom. They found the strategies important and helpful for teaching writing skills in English to their students. The findings indicate that a variety of writing instruction strategies have been part of their teaching practice and that they are experienced in teaching writing skills in English to adolescent students.

Abstract

It is assumed that Acehnese do not make use of personal space during interactions. This study aims to investigate the proximity levels used by Acehnese people when communicating with other people. The observation approach was used to collect data with people who were in natural interaction in public places as the participant. The data were pictured and kept anonymous in regards of ethical codes maintained in research. The results show that there are three conditions obtained from this study. First, mostly, Acehnese people use intimate level of proximity, which is less than 0.46 meter eventhough when they are interacting with strangers. However, this condition only applies if the interactions taking place is male-male interactions or female-female interactions. Second, in a condition where the stranger interaction is male-female, the proximity employed by the people is in the level of personal—which is 1.2 meter.  Lastly, men maintained farther distance compared to women. In conclusion, the farthest proximity level that Acehnese applied was social level (1.2 m to 3.7 m); yet, the main influencing factor is genders.

Abstract

Language is the major instrument of human beings to communicate with one another. This means that the primary role of language is as an instrument in information exchange among people. Because language is primarily spoken, a speaker should pay attention to his or her pronunciation in order to avoid misunderstanding. When conducting a research on the problem of incorrect pronunciation of some specific English consonants in the Faculty of Letters Soegijapranata Catholic University Semarang, the researcher found a unique case in relation with familiarity of the pronunciation among the respondents. In his research, the researcher used a pronunciation test consisting of words containing the problematic consonants and the respondents were some of the fist year students of the Faculty of letters Soegijapranata Catholic University. The words were taken from the most familiar English to the less familiar English words to the respondents. The results are quite surprising because the familiar words are not always pronounced correctly and the less familiar words are not always pronounced incorrectly. What makes this case happen? What are the factors influencing the respondents performance leading to correct or incorrect pronunciation in relation in relation with their degree of familiarity to the words given? This article will discuss the problems and find out the factors influencing the respondents pronunciation.

Abstract

This research studies the impact of the implementation of the Jigsaw technique with a musical background to comprehend reading at Senior high school in Sidrap, Indonesia. This research uses a quasi-experimental method to answer the question, "is the use of Jigsaw with a musical background as a technique able to improve the reading comprehension of senior high students at senior high school? This research also uses a random sampling technique to select the sample in the experimental and control class.  The data is analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The result of the calculation of students' scores from the post-test indicates that there is a significant improvement in students' comprehension achievement before and after learning reading by using the Jigsaw technique with background music. The result of this research finally shows that the use of the Jigsaw technique with background music improves the reading comprehension of the eleventh-grade students of senior high school in Sidrap, Indonesia. It is proved by the students' comprehension in the reading text that was 42.3 in their pre-test, but increasing in the post-test by mean score was 63.35. It means that the alternative hypothesis is accepted, which the t-test value is more significant than the t-table value. In the post-test, the t-test value is 11.92, while the t-table value is 2.042. Based on the result of data analysis, the writer concludes that using the Jigsaw technique with background music is useful to improve the reading comprehension of the student in reading text.

Changing notions of literacy impact and complicate ways in which English language arts educators adapt curriculum in meaningful ways for students. In this paper, I position scholastic journalism as authentic, 21st It is a wintery Saturday morning and a small group of student writers and editors wait outside Publications Room 70 eager for me to unlock the school door. Abstract

One of the most prominent themes in the Narrative involves the association of literacy with freedom. Within the context of Afro-American literature, slave narratives have attracted a great deal attention in recent criticism due to the fact that they represent the origins of the desire to search for an appointment and represent vehicle to portray the reality of Black identity. In this paper, it merely focuses on the psychological aspects of Frederick Douglass to escape from slavery influenced by the romantic era. In this work, instead of telling his life in a set of events, Frederick Douglass wrote in aform of an autobiography in which he could put forward his feelings-regret, fear, sadness, hope and enthusiasm, love, and despair personally. It shows how instead of sinking him to a weak and helpless condition, Douglass's feelings make him strong and firm to determine his path to gain freedom. That is the characteristic of romantic feelings.
