Abstract

One thing that commonly happens in a multiracial country is the interracial marriage, so does in America. As we know that America is a multiracial country, a place where people with different races, ethnic and culture live. Here, many different ethnics start to interact and mix. The interracial marriage usually is not easy. The couple has to face the different cultures problems, besides that they also will face another problem from their families or society, the interracial marriage rejection. In the case of interracial marriage rejection, I will divide the rejection based on its reasons. The first reason is different cultures and the second reason is the generation gap.

Abstract

The ancient and indigenous cultures that exist in the various regions of Indonesia are regarded as part of the national culture. In developing culture, Indonesia should aim at advancing civilization, culture and unity without rejecting new elements from foreign cultures that may improve or enrich the national culture and the same time raise human and Indonesian values. Architecture plays an important past in the Indonesian cultural identity. It is vital that it should be included in any plans for cultural development.

Abstract

The Javanese people have a healthy beliefin ghosts. magic and the supernatural; one which often seems contradictory to the more scientifically-based beliefs held in the western world. These beliefs are born from ignorance and from culture. Ignorance here has a relationship to levels of both literacy and personal intelligence. and if ignorance causes a lack of understanding. lack of understanding is a breeding ground for belief in ghosts. The culture of the Javanese is the other major factor in producing such strong and widely-held beliefs. Traditional and modern popular cultures create a mental pre-conditioning that affects judgement. Similarly. collective belief and especially the use of story give the Javanese an excellent foundation for embraCing all things supernatural. Combined with prevalent social conditions. the Javanese are convinced. but wrongly so. of the existence of ghosts and magic.

Abstract

In his book The New Criticism, Indian author Munir explores the complicated critical perspective of the same name that developed by American and British writers of the 1920s through the 1960s. Rather than explore the motives or intent of the author of a text or using the text's social or historical context to attempt to explore it, New Criticism Critics focused exclusively on the text itself. Over time, such close reading resulted in its own unique critical process as well as perspective. Authors such as John Crowe Ransom, W.K.Wimsatt and Monroe Beardsley gave shape and definition to the major tenants of the perspective. Munir, over the course of eight chapters helps clarify both the ideas and the major works of several New Criticism writers.

Abstract

Reading is an important activity to enrich knowledge. However, it is considered as a difficult skill to learn. There are many students facing difficulties in comprehending the content of the reading text, including descriptive text. A strategy which can solve such problems is needed. Skimming strategy is the strategy which enable students to quickly find the main idea and relevant information of the text. Based on those reasons, the research questions are proposed as follows: (1) How can skimming strategy be implemented in teaching reading descriptive texts? and (2) How can the second year students’ reading comprehension ability be improved using skimming strategy? This study used two research methods. Those were qualitative and quantitative research design. They were collected to prove the implementation and the significant improvement by using skimming strategy. Both numeric information and the real observation were evaluated to gain clear and strong data. The researcher acted as the observer to see the process of teaching and learning descriptive texts in three stages. The results of the research showed that the teacher and students implemented four steps of skimming strategy, which are: (1) read the first several paragraph; (2) leave out material; (3) find the main ideas; (4) read fast. The t-test of this research was also calculated to see whether there was a significant difference between control and experimental class and the mean was also measured to see the students’ improvement score. The mean score of experimental class was better than the mean score of control class. However, the t-test result showed that there was no significant difference between experimental and control class.

Abstract

As we have recently observed that there has been a crucial change in most people's perception concerning approadch to teaching. As Nunan has recently mentioned that in current language teaching development, there has been a clear and observable gradual move from a top-down to getting more and more bottom-up approadch to the planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching and learning program. (Nunan, 1996: 129). He is supported by Gardner and Miller with their interest in learners autonomy (Gardner and Miller, 1996). also by Hutchison and Waters in their ESP learning-centred approach (Hutchison and Waters, 1993). There are some pratical reasons why student's input and feedback are likely to contribute to the success of the L-T programs. This article aims to put forward an overview of the stdents' potential contribution to the wat to aoptimize the learning and teaching processes by wat of considering the inportance of their regular input and feedback that they give to help plan, monitor and review or evaluate the TL programs. In other words, this paper will try to see a different perspective on achieving a good teaching program from the area beyong method of teaching.

Abstract

This article is a research report about the influence of English reading habit on the students achievement in literary related subjects: Prose 1, Prose 2, Drama 1, Drama 2, and Poetry Analysis. There are two variables in this research: the English reading habit as independent variable and students achievement as dependent variable. The data are obtained through questionnaire, documentation and interview. Furthermore, it is analyzed using Product-Moment Correlation. The result of Product-Moment Correlation shows that there is a correlation between English reading habit and students achievement on those subjects. The result shows that the score of correlation Product-Moment is higher than score of r-table, that is 0,401455>0.339. It is found that determinant coefficient is 0.161167, which means the influence of English reading habit on the students achievement is 16.12%. It indicates that English reading habit is not the most dominant factor which influences students achievement in those subjects. In other words, the increase of students achievement is not only determined by their reading habit, but also influenced by other factors, such as intelligence, aptitude, motivation, school and family environment, teachers, and facilities including books and libraries.

Abstract

During the open campaign of the 2014 Indonesian legislative election, the way how the writers of opinion articles in newspapers perform their writing in relation with the context of the campaign is an interesting phenomenon as the fact that people writing about social matters are inevitably influenced by the way they perceived them, as well as their choice of topics and the way they approach them, by their own social experiences and values and political commitments (Fairclough, 1992). This study is aimed at revealing the short term goals and long term goals of the opinion articles in The Jakarta Post towards 2014 Indonesian legislative election. The data were collected from sixteen opinion articles in The Jakarta Post during the open campaign. The result indicates that the number of articles with unparallel purpose is higher than that of articles with parallel purpose.
