Celt: A Journal of Culture, English Language Teaching & Literature is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal, published biannually in the months of July and December with p-ISSN (printed): 1412-3320 & e-ISSN (electronic/online): 2502-4914 It presents articles around the area of culture, English language teaching and learning, linguistics, and literature. Contents include analysis, studies, applications of theories, research reports, and materials development. It is firstly published in December 2001. Ever since 2005 its manuscripts could be read online through www.journalcelt.com. By the year 2016, it launched its OJS (Open Journal System) through https://journal.unika.ac.id/ index.php/celt and from 2017 it is recorded in Crossref’s https://doi.org/10.24167 and in https://doaj.org/toc/2502-4914. Abstract

Compared to the short time that she lived Toru Dutt's literary output as a poet was prodigious. Her yearning for the past and her deep sense of many faceted losses are apparent in her poetry. The evocative acceptance of approaching death in one so young presents a picture of a girl mature beyond her years. A study of her poetry reveals her close affinity with the Romantic poets. Referring to various poems of Toru Dutt, the paper studies the role that religion, and her interpretation of religion/s she was exposed to, has to play in this embracing of the inevitability of fate. This paper analyses the reasons for the presence of the elements of death, despair, nostalgia and a yearning for the past and the role that religion plays in her acceptance of the inevitability of death in the poetry of Toru Dutt. Through a critical examination of various poems, the paper tries to uncover the beautiful interplay of memories of past experiences, stories heard long ago and the moments in the present in Dutt's poetry. It traces the journey of the poet from her exposure to death, to a questioning of death, its nature and the forms it might take, to the final acceptance of death as something as inevitable and precious as love.

Abstract

As technology develops, the quality of language learning is able to improve due to the ease and innovation in accessing information and media as a learning tool, so that it can provide enormous benefits, especially in writing learning activities. Therefore, this study aims at examining the extent to which digital storytelling utilizes Storybird (a web tool for writing story) to mediate students’ learning activities. This study employed qualitative netnography as a research method. Through netnography, there are three beneficial aspects of students’ creative writing learning, which are: 1) Storybird is a platform for collaborative writing activities, 2) digital storytelling can develop students’ higher order thinking skills, and 3) digital storytelling becomes a method for implementing creative and innovative language learning. This study contributed to provide the understanding of how digital storytelling can be a learning method that provides broader thinking space for students. In addition, the purpose of this study is to invite students to participate in the process of learning creative writing.Seiring perkembangan teknologi, kualitas pembelajaran bahasa mampu meningkat disebabkan oleh kemudahan dan inovasi dalam mengakses informasi dan media sebagai sarana pembelajaran, sehingga hal tersebut dapat memberikan manfaat yang sangat besar, terutama dalam aktivitas pembelajaran menulis. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengkaji sejauh mana digital storytelling dengan memanfaatkan Storybird (sebuah webtool untuk menulis cerita) dalam memediasi aktifitas belajar siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode netnography kualitatif sebagai model penelitian, Melalui netnography, penelitian ini mendapatkan temuan bahwa terdapat tiga aspek manfaat terhadap pembelajaran menulis kreatif siswa, yaitu: 1) Storybird menjadi platform dalam melakukan kegiatan menulis kolaboratif, 2) digital storytelling dapat membantu mengembangkan kemampuan higher order thinking siswa, dan 3) digital storytelling menjadi metode untuk menerapkan pembelajaran bahasa yang kreatif dan inovatif. Kontribusi dari penelitian ini untuk memberikan pemahaman bagaimana digital storytelling dapat menjadi metode belajar yang dapat memberikan ruang berfikir yang lebih kepada siswa. Adapun tujuan dari metode ini adalah untuk mengajak siswa agar lebih terlibat ke dalam proses pembelajaran menulis kreatif.

Abstract

The world of literature can be a medium of expressing the writer's expressions and ideas. Universal topics such as, love, death, and war often become subject mailers in the world of literature. In the novel, of The Color Purple. Alice Walker describes the oppression experienced by Afro American women in the female characters of Celie, Nellie, Shug Avery, Sofia, and Mary Agnes who faced sexual discrimina!ions in a patriarchal society. Womanhood, education, and lesbianism are factors that help the Afro American women to free themselves from traditional values. The Color Purple puts into words the process of its main character, Celie, who tries to reject and escape from the male domination of her world. The other Afro American women characters that help Celie to find her selfidentity represent the manifestation of the rejection of the traditional values. This article. which uses the socio-historical alld feminism approach. is intended to analyse the Afro-American women's rejection of traditional values by focusing on the major character of' Walker's The Color Purple. Celie. as she develops from being a victim of traditional values to the rejoiceful discovery of her selfidentity.

Abstract

Based on the results of fieldwork research, this article attempts to explore the relation between college students standard of spoken English and their oral English level in Chinese context. It has been found that most of the students have set unrealistic goals toward the proficiency of spoken English, which in turn hampers their initiative to participate in oral activities in and out of classroom setting. There are many possible explanations of this phenomenon, namely, the mistakenly assumed status of English, the different expectations of the English utterances in terms of linguistic accuracy on the part of speakers and listeners, and the unique Chinese conservative characters. Suggestions on countermeasures especially those that might be conducted in class are presented at the end of the article.

Abstract

Discovering Fiction is a two-level anthology of American short stories by classic and contemporary American authors, released on May 28, 2005. The authors, Judith Kay and Rosemary Gelshenen, have definitely worked hard in collecting the short stories and organized them into five thematic sections with two up to four units and a section review.

Abstract

This study investigated the most common mistakes university students made when formulating interrogative sentences using the ‘Wh-questions: Who, What, Whom, Which, Whose.’ The research was initiated by the researcher’s curiosity when finding out that students in IIE university (pseudonym) frequently made mistakes when trying to ask questions using the ‘Wh-question’ in almost every occasion; either in classrooms or in general lectures. The research which was conducted using descriptive qualitative method involving 60 university students as direct participants, who received some treatments found out that students’ most common mistakes were about choosing the right ‘Wh-question’ to form the question and to place every component that built the question in a correct order and the other mistakes were related to the right use of article, demonstrative, verb, an auxiliary verb, while little problem was related to a problem with diction and ability to make meaningful sentence. The study also found out that the IIE students made more mistakes than ever anticipated by Swan (1980) and that there was a close inseparable connection among all grammatical issues when composing any sentence in English.

Abstract

This paper concerns about the translation of pun in comedy movie's subtitle. The data is taken from a comedy movie Austin Powers: Goldmember. There are three problems that are being discussed in this paper. The first problem is the effect of different types of pun to translatability. Second, the strategies in translating different types of pun are discussed The last is the assessment of translation using register analysis in evaluating the extent of loss and gain occurred in the translation process. Abstract

Few days before I had my thesis examination, I met my Professor. He offered me to type some manuscripts to be published in a book. With pleasure, I accepted his offer. By the time I read the manuscripts, I got lots of information about English Language Teaching in Indonesia. Finally, the time comes; and the manuscripts are compiled into a book entitled "The Teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia." This book is actually a compilation of manuscripts written by Bambang Yudi Cahyono and Utami Widiati, two professors at English Department of State University of Malang. There are 9 chapters in this book in which the content is about English Language Teaching in the Indonesian context. Therefore, in this review, I will discuss the contents of the book, as well as highlight the benefits of this book related to English Language Teaching in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article is a study of compliment responses used by Indonesians learning English to respond to English compliments based on the compliment topics (appearance and ability) and social statuses of the addressor (higher, equal, and lower). The data were collected using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) and a questionnaire. The results of this study showed that appreciation token was the most frequently used in all situations given. The results also revealed that the subjects' background (academic year cohort) did not give a significant effect on the preference of the types of compliment responses.

Abstract

This research is aimed at revealing the new image of American popular heroes as depicted in the novel adaptation film of The Hunger Games which is created as a trilogy, which consists of two more novels: Catching Fire and Mockingjay. This film is one of the most phenomenal films in 2013-2104, which grossed out up to $407,999,255. This research used textual approach, which focused on the text as the object, that is The Hunger Games film. The result shows that The Hunger Games essentially brings the issue of slavery back into scrutiny. However, the creation of the heroin in the film is granted as the reconstruction of popular heroes in America. She is an inspiring female hero which is exemplified as the appreciation of womens values. Yet, the heroin is broadly defined with the qualities of rouge heroes as the characteristics are the representation of the belief and values associated with freedom to wash away the oppression restore the rights of the minority. In addition to the issue of slavery , the symbols of new hope and new spirit are implicitly emerged in the story. This attempt was proficiently done by the heroin, which was eventually created as the new image of the American heroes.
