Abstract

Orthodontic treatment aims to correct the improper arrangement of teeth. Tooth movement caused by orthodontic treatment causes tension and compression areas in the tooth's supporting tissues. The periodontal ligament will respond to this stimulus by triggering the inflammatory process. Flavonoids in Sauropus androgynus act as anti-inflammatories by inhibiting lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase. This experimental research was conducted on 32 guinea pigs, which were grouped into 2 groups: the control group had a rubber separator applied for 14 days, and the experimental group had a rubber separator applied also given ethanol extract of Sauropus androgynus 78.3 mg/kg BW. Samples were taken on days 0, 3, 7 and 14 and statistically analyzed using an independent T-test and Mann-Whitney test. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Sauropus androgynus affected the number of inflammatory cells. Based on statistical results, there were significant differences between the control group and the treatment group in neutrophil cells (p=0.000), eosinophils (p=0.000), lymphocytes (p=0.002), and monocytes (p=0.000). In contrast to macrophage cells, statistical results showed no significant difference between the control and experimental groups with p=0.064. The observed effects of the ethanol extract of Sauropus androgynus on periodontal ligament inflammatory cells (neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes) suggested its potential as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Abstract

Relapse is a return to the initial form of malocclusion after correction. Relapse occurred after the patient underwent a fixed orthodontic treatment, and it could be associated with the role of third molar eruption. The use of removable orthodontic appliances can maintain the retention period to prevent relapse. This report aims to report the use of removable orthodontic appliances in correcting a minor relapse case. A 23-year-old patient came to RSGM UMY complaining of misaligned upper and lower front teeth for several months after completing fixed orthodontic treatment. She felt her lower front teeth were crowded and moved more backward than the other teeth. The treatment used maxillary and mandibular expansion plates to gain space. The active plate on the maxilla was a medium labial arch and a simple spring on the mandible. A checkup of the patient was seen once a week which involved cleaning the oral cavity and the plate, measuring the space by the activated expansion screw, and checking for correction of individual teeth. The bilateral expansion plate can be used to correct mild anterior crowding due to relapse, followed by an active plate with a simple spring. The success of treatment was influenced by the patient’s cooperation and compliance with using removable orthodontic appliances.

Abstract

Approximately 90% of individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS have encountered Oral Candidiasis during the progression of their disease, especially in patients with a reduced CD4+ 200 mm3. Oral Candidiasis is a prevalent opportunistic infection of the oral cavity. Reported a case of a patient with oral candidiasis in an HIV/AIDS with CD4+ below 50 and discussed the mechanism of molecular relationship decreasing count CD4+ with virulence of Candida Albicans. In this report, we present a case of a 35-year-old female who presented with oral candidiasis. The patient's CD4+ count test revealed a level below 50 and HIV test I-II-III reactive. Human immunodeficiency Virus causes a decrease in CD4+ count and leads to opportunistic oral candidiasis infection.

Abstract

The recommended tooth brushing duration is 2 minutes to obtain optimal fluoride levels in the mouth. Unfortunately, many people, especially teenagers and children, struggled to comply with the minimum duration. This study developed and tested the effectiveness of a toothbrush with a 2-minute timer prototype. This study determined the gaps and the mean scores of salivary pH, fluoride levels, plaque scores, and the number of Streptococcus mutants between the control group that used manual toothbrushes and the experimental group that used the prototype. A crossover and single-blind method was employed, involving 40 second-grade junior high school students selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected by measuring the pH, fluoride levels, and the number of Streptococcus mutants bacteria in unstimulated saliva. The plaque score was also calculated using the Quigley-Hein modified Turesky plaque index (TMQHPI). The average fluoride level obtained by the experimental group was higher (8.86 ± 1.29) than the one of the control group (1.46 ± 0.44). The Independent T-test showed a significant difference in fluoride levels (p = 0.0001), while no significant difference in salivary was found in pH (p = 0.58) between both groups. The toothbrush with a 2-minute timer prototype developed in this study increased the fluoride levels, preventing dental caries and restoring salivary pH levels.

Abstract

In 1981, AIDS was first recognized in the United States. Every year, AIDS cases always increase. The incidence of cross-infection cases in dentists reaches 36% when managing HIV/AIDS patients. Having good knowledge and attitudes can lead to good behavior towards the management of HIV/AIDS patients. The formation of knowledge, attitudes, and good behavior will increase over time, along with the experience of a dentist. This research aims to determine the relationship between the knowledge and attitudes of dental students at RSGM UMY and the management behavior of HIV/AIDS patients. This research is an analytical observation with a cross-sectional approach that used a questionnaire instrument. The respondents of this research were 75 dental students. This research questionnaire includes knowledge, attitudes, and behavior about HIV/AIDS towards the management of HIV/AIDS patients. Data analysis used Chi-square analysis. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that 93.3% of dental students had high knowledge and positive attitudes, and 6.7% had moderate knowledge and were neutral towards HIV/AIDS patients. 77.3% of dental students fell into the good behavior category, 12% in the moderate behavior category, and 10.7% in the bad behavior category. The results of statistical tests using Chi-square obtained p value = 0.456 ( 0.05), indicating no significant relationship between research variables. Based on the results of the research, there was no significant relationship between the knowledge, behavior, and attitudes of dental students at RSGM UMY and the management behavior of HIV/AIDS patients.

Abstract

Silver nanoparticles have been the focus of research in various areas of dentistry, including orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment requires a long period of time, so the brackets are in the oral cavity for a long time. This can potentially trigger the formation of white spot lesions because plaque sticks more easily to the surrounding enamel. Using silver nanoparticles mixed with orthodontic adhesives has been reported to increase antibacterial and antimicrobial characteristics. This literature review aims to investigate the effect of adding silver nanoparticles to orthodontic adhesive devices in inhibiting antimicrobial activity. This study method was carried out by searching the online electronic databases PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar with the keywords "silver nanoparticles AND antimicrobial", "silver nanoparticles AND orthodontic adhesive", "silver nanoparticles AND composite resin", which is an original article published the year 2019- 2023. The results of research from 10 articles that met the inclusion criteria showed that orthodontic adhesives with silver nanoparticles effectively inhibited microbial activity, such as Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans), Lactobacillus acidophilus (L.acidophilus), Streptococcus sanguinis (S.sanguinis) and Candida albicans through increased release of Ag+ ions. Silver has been known to have effects, including producing minimal bacterial resistance compared to antibiotics. Even though it results in a decrease in the shear bond strength (SBS), the decrease level is still within clinically tolerable limits. It can be concluded that research needs to continue to be developed to obtain the right concentration and composition of the addition of silver nanoparticles so that an orthodontic adhesive material is obtained that is not only superior in its antibacterial properties but also in its mechanical properties.

Abstract

Knowledge of the root canal system plays a significant role in avoiding the failure of root canal treatment. Premolar teeth may have several anatomical variations in their root canal system. A dentist must understand these root canal systems and their variation to conduct the appropriate treatment. The mandibular second premolar usually consists of a single root with a single root canal. The incidence of lower premolars with two or more root canals varied between 1.2% and 34%. This study aims to evaluate the success of root canal re-treatment of mandibular second premolars with type III Vertucci’s Classification. Case report: A 28-year-old woman visited our dental hospital with a pain sensation in her lower left premolar tooth. The subjective examination revealed that she had experienced pulp capping and root canal treatment last year. However, she felt pain and uncomfortable feeling on that treated tooth. A radiograph examination showed a radiopaque area from the crown edge to half of the root. The radiolucent area from the half tooth to the apical region showed root canal branching. The diagnosis for this tooth was previously treated teeth, asymptomatic apical periodontitis with type III of Vertucci’s Classification. Root Canal Treatment was done using crown down preparation technique and obturation with warm vertical condensation followed by class II composite resin composite as a temporary filling. Results showed that after three months of evaluation, the retreated-tooth condition kept showing good condition without any complaints, pain, or clinical abnormalities, suggesting it could function properly.

Abstract

Growth and development occur in human teeth, which have experienced growth and development since pregnancy. Teeth are formed from two types of cells: oral epithelial cells, which form the enamel organ, and dental papilla, which produce dentine and pulp. Pregnant women who lack nutrition will impact the growth and development of the fetus, including the teeth. Nutrition is an essential component of dental and oral health. The nutrients needed for dental and oral health are calcium, fluorine, phosphorus, and vitamin D. This study aims to determine the effect of sea fish powder on the development and growth of the fetal toothing parent mice. This research used a true experimental design with a post-test-only control design. Pregnant mice were divided into two groups: the control group, which was given distilled water, and the treatment group, which was given seafish powder. The mouse fetuses were taken at 18 days of gestation, and dentition was observed between the control and treatment groups. Histological preparations of the fetal teeth were observed using hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Fetuses of mice in the treatment group showed tooth development conditions in the early bell stage, while fetuses in the control group showed the initiation stage. There were differences in the growth and development phase of the fetus in mice in the control group and the treatment group given sea fish powder. Providing sea fish powder can accelerate the process of odontogenesis in mouse fetuses.

Abstract

Online learning has become a new normal in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this learning mode has brought many challenges that can impact the learning experience. The study aims to evaluate student feedback on the online learning model and identify any challenges that require attention to enhance the quality of Dentistry education at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. This research is a descriptive observational study that utilized a cross-sectional approach. A modified questionnaire comprising 27 questions was distributed to collect the data. It was found that most of the 277 surveyed students agreed that implementing online learning in tutorial activities had a positive impact. Notably, 47.3% of the students found the online tutorial activities to be an excellent way to learn the material, while an equal number of students, 47.3% believed that they developed their tolerance during the online tutorial group sessions. Furthermore, the student responses to the online lecture activities were also positive, with 40.8% of the students finding comfort in the recorded classes, while 37.2% better understood the material through the online lectures. As for student satisfaction, the majority of the surveyed students expressed their satisfaction with the online learning experience regarding the material 52%, learning strategy 40,4%, availability of e-resources 49,1%, and assistance provided 42,6%.  Students responded positively to online learning in tutorials and lectures and reported overall satisfaction with online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Periodontal disease has a high prevalence in the world and Indonesia. There are 2 types of periodontal disease, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which can be caused by pathogenic bacteria such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Minimizing periodontal disease can be done by brushing, flossing, scaling, and using mouthwash that contains antibacterial. Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is an herbal plant that contains antibacterial properties, so it can be used as an additional therapy to minimize periodontal disease. The research was conducted in the MiCore laboratory FKG Usakti with the method in this study using an in vitro laboratory experiment using a biofilm assay test with a concentration of 1 g/mL, 0.50 g/mL, 0.25 g/mL, 0.125 g/mL, 0.0625 g/mL, 0.0312 g/mL, 0.015 g/mL. The extract was distributed into well plates, stained with crystal violet, incubated for 1 hour, 6 hours, and 24 hours, and then counted using a microplate reader. The results showed that extract concentrations starting from 0.015 g/mL at an incubation period of 1 hour, concentrations starting from 0.125 g/mL at an incubation period of 6 hours, and concentrations starting from 0.0625 g/mL at an incubation period of 24 hours were proven to inhibit bacterial growth and proved to be more effective than 0.2% chlorhexidine with significantly different results (p0.05). It can be concluded that Rosella extract can inhibit the growth of multispecies bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.
