Abstract

The objective of the reseach is to describe: (1) the syntactic acquisition of five-year-old children aged five years as they recount folktales, (2) the types of complex sentences they produced when telling the stories, (3) the frequency of simple and compound sentences they produced , and (4) the implementation of syntactic acquisition in early childhood. This reseach used a qualitative descriptive method. The techniques of data collection used were interviewing, recording, and note-taking. The test validity of the data source was triangulation technique. The data-analyzing technique was Direct Elemental Division (BUL) and strengthened by the Changing Form technique. The reseach concludes that the acquisition of simple and compound sentences conformed with the development stage of their age. The use of one word and two words were often produced by children. They also used the passive voice when recounting the tales. They used the verb suffix {di-} and {di-in}. Acquisition of syntax through recounting tales can be applied in accordance with existing standards of competency.

Abstract

In communication, sometimes people hear the unrelated utterances between speaker and hearer but the conversation is usually still continued that way. In this way, the pragmatic role is needed. However, in many cases the use of pragmatic might fail for many reasons: cross-culture understanding, or violating the politeness. This case happens not only in real conversation but also the classroom. This article is aimed to analyze the pragmatic failure in listening class of EFL. The discussion starts from the definition of Pragmatics and the speech act, Pragmatic failure and listening skill. It will be followed by the analysis of the pragmatic failure some conversations in listening class of EFL class. This study shows that there are at least five conversations which contain amount of pragmatic failure. The failure produced by the learners is categorized as pragmalinguistic failure related to Tho mas (1983) statement that pragmalinguistic failure related to different branches in linguistics, especially the relation between pragmatics and grammatical forms.

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing request expressions found in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang movie by Susanna White, focusing on the pragmalinguistics for request ex- pressions, the illocution of request expression, and the request strategy in this movie. The data of this research are sentences containing request expressions found in the movie. The researcher finds 118 request expressions in the movie. The method of collecting the data in this research are watching the original Movie, note taking all the request expres- sion in the movie, and re-typing all the sentences containing request expression in the movie. The writer uses descriptive interpretive to analyze the data of request expression in the movie. The techniques of analysis are finding out request expressions in the movie, identifying the pragmalinguistics of request expressions used in the movie, clarifying the intention of request expression used by the speakers in utterances in the movie and describing request strategies used in the movie. The result of the study ara as follows: (1) the pragmalinguistics of the request are internal modification; Syntactic Downgrader (Question and Past Tense/ Negotion), Lexical/ Phrasal Downgrader (Politeness Marker, Hesitator), and external modification; preparators (preparing the speech act) and (2) request strategies of these findings are mood derivable, performative, obligation state- ment, want statement, suggestory, quire prepatory, and hint.

Abstract

The study is aimed at analyzing the implementation of teaching English at State Vocational High School 8 Surakarta in 2015/2016 academic year. The objectives of the study are to describe and explain the implementation of teaching English at this school. In this research, there are seven components of the implementation of teaching English which are investigated, namely: learning objective, syllabus, instructional material, classroom procedure, techniques in teaching English, media, and assessment. The type of the study is descriptive qualitative research especially naturalistic approach. The data are derived from event, informant, and document. There are three methods of collecting data, namely: observation, interview, and document. The process of analyzing data includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion or verification. The results of the study are as follows: (1) There are two learning objectives of teaching English namely: general objective and specific objective. The general learning objective is based on curriculum and specific learning objective is based on the syllabus; (2) The type of syllabus is mixed syllabus, consisting of structural syllabus, notional syllabus and functional syllabus; (3) The instructional material used is printed material; (4) The classroom procedure used is observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating; (5) Techniques used in teaching English are reading aloud, silent reading, questioning session, group work, brainstorming, reading comprehension, individual, discussion, role play, and exercise modeling; (6) The media used in teaching learning process is white board and picture and image; and (7) Assessment types used are final test preparation, daily assessment, mid test, and final test.

Abstract

This study explored college students?strategies in learning English language. Two questions were presented. The first question is what strategies are used by the students in learning English language and the second question is how do the students use strategies in learning English language. To answer the first question, 49 college students gave respond on Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire. Then, to answer the last question, five students participated in Think Aloud Protocol (TAP) sessions. The data analysis from SILL questionnaire showed that the students were medium user of strategies in learning English language. The strategies then ranked from social strategies, followed by metacognitive, cognitive, affective, compensation, and memory strategies at the latter posi- tion. Then, to find out how the students use strategies in learning English language, think aloud protocol (TAP) sessions presented that the students made use of three major strategies in learning English language cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, and compensation strategies. These three strategies were used by the students in three different activities (understanding reading passage, dealing with unfamiliar words or phrases and self-awareness) as the study was limited to reading skills. In conclusion, the students made use of different strategies when doing particular task given to them. At this point, students in some ways have the ability to learn by themselves, that is by using strategies as lecturers cannot always facilitate students? learning, especially when lecturers teach large classes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the division of roles of husband and wife in Javanese family. This study uses a phenomenological qualitative method. The subjects of this study consisted of six couples of Javanese residing in Surakarta. Data was collected using a semi-structured interview technique. Data analysis method used is descriptive analysis. The results showed that: (1) the couple shared a role in three areas namely decision-making, management of family finances, and parenting; (2) the process of the implementation of these roles is flexible; (3) The husband has a greater role in decision- making while wife in financial management and parenting. Efforts have always been made to maintain the harmony of the relationship as a partner in the implementation of these roles. It can be concluded that the philosophy of harmony remain the pillars of the guidelines in the relationship of married couples in the Javanese family.

Abstract

The study examined the relation between self esteem and school discipline with bullying on adolescent. The participants included 81 IX?s grade students of MTsN Tinawas Nogosari. Questionnaires were used to collect the data and anova one way method and regression were used in this study to analyze and find the dynamic of all variables. Based on the calculation, correlation coeffisien was R=0,58; F regression  =25,119; p=0,0000(p>0,01). This regression measure showed that there was a significant relation between self esteem and school discipline with bullying on adolescent. Self esteem and school discipline could be a predictor for bullying. Bullying on adolescent at school was dominated by male students. Male subjects who were involved in bullying were 30,30%  and female subjects were 24,97%. Bullying at school was appropriate with the categories, which is 34,6% verbal bullying, 24,69% cyber bullying, 22,2% social bullying, and 18,5% physical bullying.

Abstract

This study is aimed to describe the lesson plan, teaching learning process of sum of fractions based of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL), and the motivation of learners attend classes in learning. This study used a qualitative approach. The type of research is a case study. Validation of data is done through triangulation. Data were collected through interviews, observation, documentation, and testing. The technique of data analysis is descriptive, entrepretative. The results of this study indicate that (1) the development of lesson plan has been implemented routinely in every new school year, (2) the process of learning mathematics goes through three stages, namely preinstructional phase (preliminary / initial activity), instructional phase (core activities), and appraisal, (3) during the learning process, the students have a high motivation to participate in activities  because of the method used by teachers is fun and enjoyable

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the relationship between service quality, economic status, educational status of Simpati card customers loyalty in Surakarta. The subjects of in this research are the Simpati card customers in Surakarta. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using Multiple Linear Regression. The result of t test statistic tcount  was 6088, P.value (Sig.) 0000 and the regression coefficient 0663. It means that there is an influence of quality of service (X ) on customer loyalty. Test results obtained by t test statistic tcount was 0228; P.value (Sig.) 0820 and the regression coefficient 0560. It means that there is no influence of socioeconomic status (X ) on customer loyalty. Test results obtained by t test statistic tcount equals to -1820; P.value (Sig.) 0071, and the regression coefficients is -0759. This indicates that there is no effect of educational Status (X?) on custumer loyalty. The results of the regression test known value of fcount  equal to 14.118 with a significance value 0.000. This indicates an increase in the quality of service simultaneously together social status and educational status will increase customer loyalty. Results of test regression relations service quality, economic status, status education against customer loyalty card Simpati is as follow: there is a relation between service quality; there is no correlation between economic status and loyalty; there is no correlation between educational status and customer loyalty; and simultaneously, service quality, economic status, and educational status have influence on loyalty of Simpati card customers in Surakarta.
