Abstract

This research aims to identify the relationship between self concept and parent nurturing pattern and santri (Islamic boarding school students) conformity. Self concept is a picture owned by somebody about him or herself which formed by experiences gained from individual interaction to the environment. Whereas the parent nurturing pattern is the way parent used in treating, communicating, making discipline, monitoring and supporting children. Whereas conformity is called as a change in behavior or belief as a result of social pressure either imaginary or real. The sample of this research is 170 santris of Modern Boarding School of Imam Syuhodo Muhammadiyah Blimbing Branch Sukoharjo. The data collection technique is conducted by using questionnaire consisting of three scales, they are self concept, parent nurture pattern and conformity scale. From the data analysis, it indicates that there is significant relationship between self concept and parent nurturing pattern altogether to the santri conformity.

Abstract

Inclusion education is the education which incorporates children with special needs to learn with peers in regular schools. Extraordinary School is the one which is organized to serve school-age children with special needs (having a physical or mental disorder). With regards to the implementation of inclusion education, people question about the existence of Extra Ordinary Schools. The problem is how the existence of Extraordinary School after the enactment of Inclusion Education. It is important to investigate this issue. The study was conducted in 12 Extraordinary Schools in four districts of Surakarta. The result indicates that most respondents answered optimistically that Extraordinary Schools will exist, due to various reasons: (1) not all of the staff can be accommodated by the School Inclusion, hearing and mentally disabled children (light, medium) which have a special feature that is his IQ below normal child can no longer be admitted to the class with regular normal children, deaf children have difficulty to attend inclusion class, blind children who have normal average IQs can attend Inclusion School with supervision of Special Teacher, disabled children who have normal IQ most likely to be accepted in the Inclusion School, slowlearning children and children with autism also can be handled by special teacher Inclusion School, (2) The most parents of children with disabilities still entrust their children educated in special schools who have enough experience rather than send their children to Inclusion school, (3) Inclusion Education can be managed in collaboration with Extraordinary School nearby (4) the majority of people, especially young parents do not know about Inclusion School, and (5) the existing Extraordinary School is well established, with adequate infrastructure, has a strong legal basis, and professional teachers. Thus Extraordinary School will remain there despite the existence of Inclusion School.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe: (1) students? perception of the essential meaning of the word tolerance on religious life and (2) students? perception of  the contextual meaning of the word tolerance in religious life. The subjects were high school students Muhammmadiyah 1 and  2 Surakarta, total number of students,  97. Data were collected with an open questionnaire and interviews and analyzed with interactive analysis. The results showed that (1) threre were thirteen variations of students? perception of the essential meaning of the word tolerance in religious life, (2) there were nine students? perception of the contextual meaning of religious tolerance. Most of the thirteen perceptions were substantially similar to those of the KBBI (2007), however, having shorter and different wordings. The perception that semantically the same substance is dealing with respect other religions, while those with different wordings but semantically the same are not to insult, criticize, or make fun of other people of different religions, to know and understand other religious life, no discrimination to others, a sense of mutual need between one individual to another individual, tolerant of others, caring for others, respect other religions, maintaining good relations between people, not overbearing, giving opportunity to others, living in harmony, and mutual assistance in the community. The perception of the meaning of the word tolerance varies contextually as the following: having exactly the same wordings, having different wordings but semanti cally the same, and having different contextual meanings.

Abstract

The curriculum implemented in Indonesian education has undergone several changes. This is because education changes from time to time to match with the changes in the context of the era. One of the changes highlighted in the curriculum is materials for Indonesian language. Curriculum 2013 is currently ratified to replace the previous one, school unit based curriculum. Why is it so? This study tries to investigate the implementation of teaching learning process of Indonesian language in junior high school of SMP Islam Al-Syukro Universal. This is a case study, using qualitative method. The result of study reveals that school-based unit curriculum has been implemented in SMP Islam Al Syukro Universal, particularly in the teaching of Indonesian language. This is materialized in the lesson plans and the teaching learning process, covering learning objectives, the material presented, the methods used, and evaluations models.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate strategies and politeness in rejection of the invitation, offer, and suggestions by English teacher in Madison County. This study uses the theoretical framework of Takahashi , Beebe and Uliss - Weltz. Data was collected using Mechanical Completion of Discourse (Discourse Completion Technique). The data source is the 38 English teachers, 14 men and 24 women who teach in junior high schools in Madison County. The results showed as follows: (1) The English teacher at junior high school in Madison County implemented two semantic formula of direct and indirect strategies in three acts of rejection (invitations, offers and suggestions). (2) Indirect strategy in the rejection of the dominant is the supply and advice directly while the dominant strategy used in the rejection of the invitation.

Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the instructional desgin for the teaching of English at SMP Muhammadiyah I Kartasura 2013 academic year. In this research, there are nine components of instructional design investigated, namely: (1) learning objective, (2) syllabus, (3) roles of instructional material, (4) classroom procedure, (5) classroom technique, (6) teacher?s role, (7) learner?s role, (8) media, and (9) evaluation model. The type of the study is descriptive qualitative especially naturalistic approach. In this research, the data are devired from event, informant, and field note. There are three techniques of collecting data, namely: observation, interview, and document. The techniques of analyzing data are collecting data, data reduction, data display, and verification conclusion. The result of the study, such as: (1) The general objective is to deveop students? individual knowledge, character, skill for independent life and sustainable education. The specific learning objective is to develop students? communicative competence with four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing; (2) The type of syllabus is notion functional syllabus; (3) the roles of instructional materials are as a resource for presentation materials, for learner practice, and for stimulation of classroom activities; (4) the classroom procedure used are Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration and Evaluation and Genre Based Approach; (5) the teacher?s role are facilitator, organizer, manager, assessor, planner and motivator; (6) the media used in teaching learning process is used textbook and picture as printed media, video and images showed by using LCD.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of self-management strategies to improve students? learning discipline. The study was taken place at SMP X Pati. It was an experimental research used Solomon Three Group Designs: the experimental group, control group 1, and control group 2. The number of subjects were 18 students of class VIII consisting of 6 students in each group. The data was collected using a scale of learning discipline and documentation. It was hypothesized that there was differences in learning discipline prior and after the use of self-management strategies. The intervention was given to group counseling with self-management strategies for 5 meetings. The result indicates that there was influence on learning discipline prior and after group counseling on self management strategy of the three groups seen from result of asymp. sig equal to 0,001. It means that group counseling on self-management strategy was effective to improve students? learning discipline.

Abstract

The dual-role of the students of English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty Muria Kudus University as both English language learners and language users gets them to be autonomous, effective, efficient, and strategic readers. The objective of this research is to investigate the relationship between quality of the reading strategy and academic achievement of the students. The subjects of this research were 104 students of EED UMK comprising of all semesters taken randomly. The instrument used was closed-ended questionnaire. The result of this research reveals that there is no relationship between quality of the reading strategy and academic achievement, meaning that the quality of reading strategy does not influence the academic achievement of the students. Implikasions and recommendations for the institution and for further research were proposed.

Abstract

This study deals with the form and the function of caretaker speech which is found in caretaker?s utterance in Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang Movie. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the type of language form of the caretaker and (2) to describe the type of language function of the caretaker found in Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang Movie. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research are the utterance from the caretaker found in manuscript of Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang Movie. The data collection technique is documentation. The technique of analyzing data are descriptive qualitative. The writer uses the theories from Frank (1972) to analyze the type of language form, and M.A.K. Halliday (1977) to analyze the type of language function. The result of this study shows that (1) there are four types of word: noun, verb, adjective, and adverb; three types of phrase: noun phrase, verb phrase, and adverb phrase; and two types of sentence categorized into two. The first category is based on type, namely: declarative, imperative, interrogative, and exclamatory sentence; the second one by number of full predication, namely: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentence. (2) The writer found 6 types of language function, they are: regulatory function, instrumental function, representational function, personal function, interactional function, and imaginative function.

Abstract

This study was aimed at revealing students? essay writing skill, describing the improvement of writing aspects, and finding out whether or not the use of peer editing was effective to improve the students? writing skill. This reseach was experimental study using nonequivalent control group design. The population of this research was all the fifth semester students of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Purworejo. The researcher used two classes as the research samples. As the experimental group, the researcher took students of VA class who were taught by peer editing. Then, the researcher involved students of VB class as the control group. The reseacher conducted a series of treatment from August to November 2014. The researcher used a writing test to collect the data. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data. After analyzing the data, the researcher obtained some find- ings. First, the students? writing score was 71.2 belonged to good category. Second, all writing aspects could improve where the significant improvement was in the aspects of content (2.6 points) and vocabulary (1.9 points). The aspects of organization, grammar, and mechanics did not increase significantly (0.3-0.7 points). Third, the result of calculation illustrated that t-obtained was higher than the critical value on the t-table (3.602>2.000). It meant that the use of peer editing was effective to improve the students? essay writing skill.
