Abstract

The research aimed at finding out two questions: 1). what are rural English teachers’ beliefs about English in a rural school in facing the modern era?; and2). to what extent is English important in a rural school related to its global role viewed from teachers’ belief?. This paper utilized qualitative method in the form of case study. The respondents of the study were three English teachers from a rural school. The data were gathered through observation and interview then analyzed through the interactive model which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion: drawing/verification. The data analyzed reveals that: 1). English is crucially needed in rural school to develop human resources and to lead students to get the latest information; 2). English takes the global role in the rural school for helping students to learn internet and computer, to balance human resources and natural resources and as a foundation for making the connection with other people around the world in the wider scope. At the end of the paper, suggestions, and recommendation were also provided. Keywords: teachers’ beliefs, rural school, the importance of English

Abstract

This study aims at identifying, analyzing and describing the accuracy of accounting terms translation in Textbook ‘Management Accounting’ and its translation ‘Akuntansi Manajemen.’ This study is in the domain of descriptive-qualitative.The data sources are the document, questionnaire and informants, and the datawere the sentences containing the accounting terms. The data are collected bytechniques of the content analysis, in-depth interview and questionnaire. For thevalidity of data, this study used the data triangulation technique, and then the datawere analyzed with the interactive model. The finding of this study shows that from58 data, the accuracy of the accounting terms translation was 53 data or 91.38%while their inaccuracy was 5 data or 8.62%. The other finding shows that not allthe accounting terms were translated but changed in their spellings according tothe rules of spelling adaptation in Indonesian language.Keywords: accounting terms, translation, accuracy

Abstract

The study aims at descibing the relevance of literary works published by newspapers with the basic competence of Bahasa Indonesia subject for junior high school (SMP), and the levels of physchological development of junior high school students. This study involves research and development approach in which the first year project applies desriptive qualitative method. The data take the forms of words, phrases, sentences, and discourse of literary works gathered from two newspapers, Solopos and Kompas issued in January and February 2011. The data is analyzed by critical and comparative methods. The results show that (1) not all literary works found in Solopos and Kompas agree with the basic competence of Bahasa Indonesia subject for junior high school, excepts children’s story, poetry, short story, and picture story which comprise 64% of total data. Other works such as novel and poems comprising 36% of the basic competence were not found in the newspapers. (2) Not all literary works published by the two newspapers are appropriate to the psychological development of the students of junior high school. Only 49% of literary works were relevant to both basic competence and psychological development of the students. Nevertheless each newspaper provides different quantity of the relevance; as for Solopos, out of 54 literary works, 37 (69%) were relevant, and for Kompas, out of 131 literary works, only 40 (31%) were applicable.

Abstract

Teknik atau metode pembelajaran sangatlah banyak, antara lainceramah, diskusi, demonstrasi, laboratorium, tanya jawab, dan lain–lain.Metode ceramah dan diskusi banyak digunakan dalam proses pembelajaranbahasa Inggris. Dengan metode ini siswa dianggap sebagai penerimapesan yang siap diisi namun tidak memberikan kesempatan pada merekauntuk berkarya. Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah: ApakahPenggunaan pendekatan Scientific dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulisteks narratif melalui media gambar berseri (picture series) bagi siswa kelasX IIS 2 Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Wonogiri Tahun Pelajaran 2014/2015.Dalam penelitian ini peneliti berkolaborasi dengan guru lain serta dengankepala sekolah. Peneliti terlibat langsung dalam penelitian mulai dariawal sampai penelitian berakhir. Peneliti berusaha melihat, mengamati,merasakan, menghayati, merefleksi dan mengevaluasi kegiatan pembelajaranyang berlangsung. Tahap-tahap pelaksanaan penelitian tindakan terdiri dariperencanaan (planning), pelaksanaan (acting), observasi (obseving), danrefleksi (relecting). Untuk mendapatkan hasil penelitian yang akurat makadata yang telah terkumpul dianalisis secara statistik yaitu mengunakan rumusmean atau rata-rata. Dari hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa nilai rata-ratapada siklus mengalami peningkatan yang signifikan. Prosentase jumlah siswayang memenuhi aspek kemampuan bertanya pada siklus I 44,7% dan untuksiklus II 63,1%. Prosentase jumlah siswa yang memenuhi aspek inisiatif/kreatif untuk siklus I 31,5%, pada siklus II 42,1%. Prosentase jumlah siswayang memenuhi aspek rasa ingin tahu untuk siklus I 26,3%, pada siklus II36,8%. Peningkatan jumlah siswa yang memenuhi aspek-aspek tersebut, darisiklus I ke siklus II disebabkan adanya pola pikir mereka untuk membangunpengetahuan mereka sendiri. Mengacu pada hipotesis tindakan yangdiajukan dalam penelitian tindakan kelas ini maka dapat disimpulkan bahwapenggunaan pendekatan Scientific dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulisteks narratif melalui media gambar berseri (picture series) bagi siswa kelas XIIS 2 Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Wonogiri Tahun Pelajaran 2014/2015.Kata Kunci : pendekatan scientific, teks naratif, gambar berseri

Abstract

This study aims to describe the literary form of language variationcontained in the show Kick Andy episode, “Learn to Death”. The method used isdescriptive qualitative. Provision of data is done by methods refer to listen andunderstand the data linguistic oral form of data in the data source view KickAndy.The technique is a recording and log techniques. The analysis of data usinga unified method. The research result describe that form of language variation inthis show consists of variations in terms of formality, speakers, use, and means.1) The variation in terms of formality using a variety offamiliar, 2) variationsBetawiand Batak dialect speakers are used, 3) variations in the use of more useof registers in the field of education, 4) Variation means used in this show is avariation of oral.

Abstract

The existence of focus in a sentence can be recognized from the available mark- ers used. Elements of sentence being focussed get “specific attention” within an utterance. The specific elements “are separatd” from the others by means of cer- tain strategies and markers. The strategies and markers include, among others: (1) the order, such as preposing the focussed elements; (2) the use of focussed mark- ers, such as the addition of pewatas (definite), relator yang, clitics –nya, conjunc- tion bahwa, and the word juga; and (3) the construction of specific focus, con- structions which intrinsically posite the distribution of focus by making constrast and repetition. Key words: fokus, piranti, pengedepanan, dan penambahan.

Abstract

Studi ini bertujuan untuk merumuskan taksonomi tindak kesantunan direktif dikalangan andik SD yang berlatar belakang budaya Jawa. Tujuan spesifik studi iniadalah untuk merumuskan taksonomi dan pola semestaan realisasi tindakkesantunan direktif andik SD dalam hubungannya dengan prinsip dasar berbahasa PKS dan PSS; prinsip harmoni sosial PI dan PK. Objek penelitian ini adalah skala kelangsungan dan peringkat tindak kesantunandirektif dalam kaitannya PKS, PSS, prinsip harmoni sosial PI, PK, dn prinsip kultural budaya Jawa. Sumber data penelitian meliputi keseluruhan aktivitas berbahasa andik SD yang direfleksikan oleh guru kelas SD melalui FGD, baik dalam suasana formal maupun nonformal. Data penelitian berupa skala kelangsungan dan peringkat kesantunan pertuturan menurut PKS, PSS, PI, PK, dan Pk. Interpretasi perwujudan tindak kesantunan direktif dilakukan dengan kerja analisis pragmatik yang mengacu pada analisis heuristik model Grice, skala kelangsungan dan peringkat kesantunan model BrownLevinson. Hasil studi ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) perwujudan tindak kesantunan direktif (TKD) di kalangan andik SD berlatar belakang budaya Jawa berkecenderungan diwujudkan melaui tipe menyuruh pada kategori memerintah dan tipe meminta pada kategori memohon. Temuan ini menggambarkah bahwa sesuai dengan kodratnya sebagai anak pada dasarnya masih memerlukan suri tauladan dari orang tuanya di rumah, gurunya di sekolah, dan panutannya sebagai yang difigurkan atau ditokohkan di lingkungan masyarakatnya masing-masing. (2) realisasi TKD di kalangan andik SD berlatar belakang budaya Jawa berkecenderungan dinyatakan dengan cara-cara tak langsung dan modus-modus nonliteral daripada dengan cara-cara langsung atau modus literal. Realisasi ini menggambarkan bahwa andik SD pada hakikatnya masih dalam masa perkembangan mental lingual sehingga masih memerlukan bimbingan yang bernilai positif, santun, dan berkarakter dari orang tua, guru, dan lingkungan masyarakatnya masing-masing dalam hal berbahasa serta bertindak tutur. (3) Skala tindak kesntunan direktif di kalangan andik SD berlatar belakang budaya Jawa lebih dibangun dengan skala untung-rugi dan langsung-tak langsung sehingga kurang menjangkau pada hal-hal yang bernilai skala pilihan atau opsional. Temuan ini berarti andik SD saat ini memiliki ketergantungan yang tinggi terhadap orang tua, guru, dan lingkungan sekolah sehingga keberanian di dalam menentukan pilihan dan keputusan menjadi modal yang sangat minim dimiliki bagi andik SD. (4) Prinsip harmoni sosial dan rukun sebagai prinsip kultural yang digunakan oleh andik SD berlatar belakang budaya Jawa memiliki keterbtasan berinterelasi pada bidal-bidal kesantunan masyarakat Jawa, yaitu kurmat ’hormat’, andhap asor ’rendah hati’, empan papan ’sadar akan tempat’ atau ’introspektif’, tepa slira ’tenggang rasa’. Realisasi prinsip rukun sebagai modal dasar dan filosofi masyarakat Jawa belum sepenuhnya menyatu ke dalam perilaku berbahasa, khususnya bertindak kesantunan direktif, di dalam kehidupan sehari-hari di kalangan andik SD berlatar belakang budaya Jawa.Kata Kunci: tindak kesantunan direktif, maksim, skala kesantunan direktif.

Abstract

Artikel ini membahas bentuk dan makna hubungan konjungtif, khususnyametafora logikal, yang pada umumnya tidak dianggap sebagai bagian dari logikawacana. Artikel ini akan menggali bentuk dan makna metafora logikal. Di sampingitu, artikel ini juga akan melihat bagaimana metafora logikal akan mempengaruhigaya bahasa. Abstract

Teachers are one of the most important parts in the discourse of education andthe process of teaching and learning in schools. It was this that interested the writerto research their perceptions of English language teaching for primary students.The respondents are five participants from different primary schools in Makassar.They were asked to comment on their beliefs in terms of the materials used in theclassrooms, the aims of teaching English for primary students, their problems inrelation to professional knowledge, classroom practices and context (school andcommunity), and their way to resolve many problems. The responses are groupedinto four major categories in terms of the aims of the research and examined toexplore similarities and differences. The result showed that when the materials areabout familiar topics and are presented through songs, games, and pictures, in theclassroom they result in positive student attitude and increase interest and motivationin learning English. Participants feel that the main aim of teaching English foryoung students is to provide them with as much vocabulary as possible before theymove on to higher education. Finally, some constraints of the program are alsofound in the classroom practices.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the pattern of politeness and the shifts of positive politeness among students of class IX MTs N 1 Surakarta. In addition,this research also aims to identify the factors that are influencing the emergence of positive politeness shift among those students. This research is classified as descriptive qualitative research. The data includes speech of class IX’s students that contains positive politeness. The data collected by taking notes from the students’ speech. Data sources are all students of class IX MTs N 1 Surakarta. Methods in analysis include the intralingual match methods by comparing the lingual elements with the extra-lingual elements. The results showed that there are six forms of positive politeness shifts which then lead to the 13 patterns of positive politeness strategy used by students who have Javanese culture backgrounds. Those patterns include attention to the pattern of preferences, desires, and the needs of what opponent said; exaggerate things to get attention, approval, and sympathy from the opponents; using a marker of group identity; seeking approval to repeat some or all of the speakers utterances; pseudo agreement, white lies, hedging opinion; small talk and presuppositions; jokes; expressed understanding or understanding what are the opponent said; making promises; show an attitude of optimism; involves the opponents in the activities; ask questions or give reasons; also reciprocal relationship. In addition, there are several factors that are influencing positive politeness shifts. They are social distance, contexts, excessive complimenting, deliberately asked for a reason, no harm intentions,and rejections.
