Abstract

This paper is a part of a larger scale interlanguage pragmatic study exploring politeness involved in refusals conducted by the English teachers in East Java, Indonesia. The data were elicited by discourse completion tasks (DCT), from 38 English teachers, (n=14 males and n=24 females). The empirical data of politeness strategies were analyzed by Brown and Levinson’s (1987) theory. The findings showed that the EFL teachers applied two semantic formulae indirect and direct strategies in conjunction to adjuncts across three initiating acts of refusals (invitations, offers and suggestions). When declining invitations and suggestions, they mostly applied positive politeness, but when refusing offers they predominantly used bald on record.  Keywords: Politeness, interlanguage pragmatics, refusal strategy

Abstract

ABSTRACTIn Javanese context, refusal tends to threat the feelings and self worth of addresseeswhile in British, refusal is not normally face threatening or at least it is notas face threatening as it is in the Javanese context. This paper compares sequencingof semantic formulae and adjuncts of refusal to invitations phrased by nativespeakers of British English and Javanese learners of English. The data of refusalare elicited through written discourse completion tasks (DCT) involving nine scenarios.Refusal strategies are classified based on a modified version of refusal taxonomyby Beebe, Takahashi, and Uliss-Weltz (1990). Overall the refusal strategiesemployed by the two groups are similar. Few differences in sequencing of semanticfomulae and adjuncts of refusal are due to politeness function. Keywords: refusal, sequential order, semantic formula, adjunct.

Abstract

This article deals with the study of words in the scope of morphology with the stress on Hockett’s ideas (1954) of Item and Arrangement (IA), Item and Process (IP), dan Word and Paradigm (WP). Using this approach, men to concern will really understand that derivational (or lexical) morphology studies words forma- tion resulted in new categories of the words while in inflectional morphology, such a result is not found. Inflectional morphology; on the other hand, deals with the result of words formation derived from the same lexems. The outstanding inference shows that to be the scope of word formation is only the derivasional morphology instead of inflectional one. The understanding of inflection becomes the scope of syntax since it is only completing the forms of lexem; however, derivation is in- cluded in lexicon for it provides new lexems. Key words: derivasional, infleksional, IA, IP, WP, word formation, and lexem.

Abstract

The paper discusses the exploitation of euphemistic expressions in printed mediato soften words or phrases considered to be vulgar or profane or negative. Severaltexts from The Jakarta Post were taken as the data source and all expressions in suchtexts downtoning the other negative ones were taken as the data for the analysis. The results show that the softening expressions in the forms of euphemistic expressions are created through two types of process, namely semantic shift and metaphorical transfer. Meanwhile, the motive behind the usage of the expressions is only one, i.e. because of the fear of causing psychic pain to the other participant(s). Having seen the types of and the motive behind of the euphemistic expressions exploited in journalistic articles, the writer as well as the readers of such texts can expectedly understand the message accommodated by the texts easily. Keywords: downtoner, euphemism, expressions, journalism, texts.
