Abstract

The current study describes learning strategies in relation to interlanguage errors. As it is commonly believed that interlanguage errors are the result of cognitive mechanism or learning strategy used by second language learners. This study specifically describes the learning strategies employed by Indonesian learners of English which result in interlanguage errors. The data are sentences containing errors taken from students’ compositions. The technique used to collect the data is documentation, and the data are analyzed qualitatively. The result indicates that there are three major types of learning strategy used by the learners, including: overgeneralization, first language transfer, and simplification. Of these, the dominant learning strategy is overgeneralization which implies that the students have relied their linguistic knowledge on the target language (English) rather than on that of their first language. English teachers should have positive attitude on interlanguage errors since errors are an inevitable process in foreign language learning. They must also provide appropriate training for the students so that they are aware the differences between English and Indonesian. Such understanding could help them minimize errors and hence they will be able to develop their interlanguage system.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengangkat masalah: 1) Bagaimanakah peningkatan kemampuan berpidato menggunakan bahasa Jawa pada siswa kelas IX D di SMP Negeri 1 Polokarto semester II tahun pelajaran 2012/ 2013, 2) Adakah perubahan kemampuan siswa setelah dilakukan pembelajaran berpidato bahasa Jawa dengan metode latihan secara intensif. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus, yaitu siklus I dan siklus II. Masing-masing siklus terdiri dari tahap perencanaan, tindakan, observasi dan refleksi. Data yang diambil dalam penelitian tindakan kelas ini adalah data tes yang berupa tes keterampilan berpidato bahasa Jawa dan data nontes yang berupa hasil pengamatan dan wawancara. Data yang telah diperoleh dianalisis dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keterampilan berpidato bahasa Jawa siswa kelas IX D mengalami peningkatan setelah dilakukan pembelajaran dengan metode latihan secara intensif. Pada prasiklus siswa belum mencapai nilai sesuai standar pengukuran nilai yang diharapkan yaitu 75. Nilai ratarata yang diperoleh pada prasiklus sebesar 57,825 atau berada pada kategori kurang. Setelah dilakukan tindakan siklus I nilai rata-rata keterampilan berpidato bahasa Jawa meningkat 23,28% yaitu menjadi 75,375. Hasil siklus I ternyata belum memenuhi target pencapaian nilai hasil belajar, oleh karena itu dilakukan tindakan siklus II. Nilai rata-rata siklus II sebesar 85,825, artinya ada peningkatan 12,18% dari hasil siklus I. Berdasarkan hasil observasi, dan wawancara yang telah dilakukan, perilaku negatif siswa menjadi positif. Semangat siswa meningkat dan terlihat menikmati pembelajaran. Siswa juga terlihat semangat ketika diminta praktik berpidato bahasa Jawa.Kata Kunci : keterampilan berpidato, bahasa Jawa, metode Latihan intensif.

Abstract

This article presents the linguistic phenomena in the text of Suharto’s cases both by the pros and cons sides. The texts are taken from internet accessed on May 30.2008. The analysis used is referring to Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis: phe- nomenology-interpretative and the combination of both qualitative and quantita- tive approaches. However, the analysis applies Halliday’s Systemic Functional Gram- mar, especially in the system of its transitivity. The result shows that there is a contradictory in the act sequence between the pros and cons sides. The pros texts are more humane than the cons ones. Moreover, the pros genres are narrative and recount, and they tend to be emosional, while the cons one is report and tends to be rational. The ideology within the pros text is humanism and feudalism, while within the cons one is democratism/equality. Key words: makna ideasional, teks, sistem transitivitas, CDA, dan genre.

Abstract

Laku dramatis yang ditugaskan Radhar Panca Dahana kepada tiga tokohperempuan dalam cerpen Lelaki dengan Bibir Tersenyum menarik untuk dikaji,terutama dalam pandangan paham feminisme yang memang bertugas menyelamihal-hal keperempuanan. Data yang didapat dari cerpen LBT dianalisis denganmetode deskriptif-kualitatif, dan diinterpretasikan dengan acuan teori feminisradikal. Beradasarkan hasil pembahasan, disimpulkan bahwa ketiga tokohperempuan yang dikaji memiliki watak yang kompleks. Di satu sisi merekamemegang dominasi atas diri Jaron, namun di sisi lain karakter perempuantersubordinasi dalam pandangan paham feminis radikal tetap disandangkan olehpengarang. Arti senyum yang tersungging di bibir Jaron di akhir cerita menyiratkandominasi kultur patriarkat yang tidak terpatahkan oleh superioritas perempuanyang dipaksakan.Kata Kunci: laku dramatis, tokoh perempuan, kajian feminis

Abstract

Khususnya seni sastra, seni sangat terkait dengan kehidupan nyata. Di Kabupaten Sumba Barat, ada seni tradisi membaca prosa/syair yang menggambarkankeindahan alam, yang biasanya dipimpin oleh seorang Rato (Imam) untuk menyelesaikan suatu perselisihan. Membaca syair diatas panggung sebagai pilihan upacara yang melambangkan kerukunan yang mempercayai kesungguhan Marapu. Membaca syair dalam upacara adat di Sumba Barat memiliki kekhasan. Dengan syair,Rato membangun hubungan antara jiwa leluhur (Marapu) dan realita spiritualsekarang.Kata Kunci: syair adat, sengketa, realitas sosial.

Abstract

Penelitian tindakan kelas ini dimaksudkan untuk meningkatkankeberanian siswa berbicara dan meningkatkan kemampuan membaca grafikmelalui metode pembelajaran lempar bola salju untuk siswa kelas XI B, SMANMASUK pada semester kedua tahun akademik 2014/2015. Penelitian inidilaksanakan dalam dua siklus. Hasil siklus pertama dan kedua menunjukkanbeberapa perbaikan pada keberanian siswa berbicara serta kemampuan untukmembaca grafik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peningkatan keberanianberbicara. Pada penelitian awal, hasilnya adalah 22,6%. Nilai meningkatmenjadi 65,3% pada siklus pertama, dan terus meningkat menjadi 75% padasiklus kedua. Kalimat yang digunakan oleh siswa menjadi lebih baik danbervariasi. Rata-rata nilai pada penelitian awal hanya 46,1 dan menjadi 56,1pada siklus pertama dan meningkat secara signifikan pada siklus kedua 81,41.Kata kunci: keberanian berbicara, membaca grafik, melempar bola salju

Abstract

Identifying teaching material is the process of  selecting, adapting and evaluating of teaching based on specific necessities of the students. Need Analysisis really needed to identify teaching materials for  English for Specific Purpose. The researchobjective is toidentify the ESP materials for teaching 3rd semestermedical record students at Academy of Medical Record and Health information Citra Medika (APIKES CITRA MEDIKA) Surakarta. The work used qualitativeand quantitative methods. The outcomesof this study showed the real necessities of students in learning English to prepare their future at the field of medical record and health information. Findings of the need analysis demonstrate that all four of the language skills were necessary for their academic studies and their target career. There are certain topics related to English for medical record such as medical record staff’ duties, ethical and legal issues in medical record, Hospital statistics, Medical record filling system, Health information system, and so on. Accordingly, this study proposes new ESP materials based on the stakeholders’ needs.It is suggested that textbook or handout of English for Medical Record will be made based on the Need Analysis by ESP designers and ESP lecturers involve actively recognizing the progressive needs of medical record students.

Abstract

In many languages in the world, there are two tendencies of word formation: (1) word formation which changes the lexical identity (derivation), and (2) word formation which keeps the lexical identity (inflection). The morphology process in verbs in Indonesian is divided into affixational derivation, inflectional derivation. The affixational derivation process which derive the verb lexemes uses deriva- tional affixes, meanwhile the affixational inflection process which derive the word forms (grammatical words) uses inflection affixes. The function of derivational affix is to derive the intransitive verbs and/or to derive the transitive verbs. The function of inflectional affix is to derive the grammatical words. Key words: morphology process, derivation, inflection, verb, dan leksem.

Abstract

The participial construction is one that exists in English but not in Indonesian. With regard to the translation, it might not be easy to translate a text having a structure that exists in one language (as a source language/SL) but not in the other (as a target language/TL). This study analyses the English participial clauses and their Indonesian translations in terms of the strategies applied in the translation. It focuses on two types of participial clauses; they are adverbial clauses and adjectival clauses. The data evaluated are the texts in Sidney Sheldon’s novel Morning, Noon, and Night (1995) which is translated into Pagi, Siang dan Malam (1996) by Hendarto Setiadi and John Grisham’s novel The Street Lawyer (1998) which is translated into Pengacara Jalanan (1998) by Widya Kirana and Diniarty Pandia. This study compares the strategies that the translators apply and tries to find the similarities as well as differences in the strategies used in the translations of the two novels. To reach these objectives, the English version and the Indonesian translations are compared and analyzed to determine the strategies applied and to find the similarities and differences of the strategies.Keywords: participial clauses, translation, strategies, Source Language (SL), Target Language (TL), adverbial clauses, adjectival clauses
