Abstract

Abstract. This paper suggests a theoretical framework for analyzing the mechanism of the behavior of academic researchers whose interests are tangled and vary widely in academic factors (the intrinsic satisfaction in conducting research, the improvement in individual research ability, etc.) or non-academic factors (career rewards, financial rewards, etc.). Furthermore, each researcher also has his/her different academic stances in their preferences about academic freedom and academic entrepreneurship. Understanding the behavior of academic researchers will contribute to nurture young researchers, to improve the standard of research and education as well as to boost collaboration in academia-industry. In particular, as open innovation is increasingly in need of the involvement of university researchers, to establish a successful approach to entice researchers into enterprises’ research, companies must comprehend the behavior of university researchers who have multiple complex motivations. The paper explores academic researchers' behaviors through optimizing their utility functions, i.e. the satisfaction obtained by their research outputs. This paper characterizes these outputs as the results of researchers' 3C: Competence (the ability to implement the research), Commitment (the effort to do the research), and Contribution (finding meaning in the research). Most of the previous research utilized the empirical methods to study researcher's motivation. Without adopting economic theory into the analysis, the past literature could not offer a deeper understanding of researcher's behavior. Our contribution is important both conceptually and practically because it provides the first theoretical framework to study the mechanism of researcher's behavior. Keywords:  Academia-Industry, researcher behavior, ulrich model’s 3C.

Abstract

Abstract. Innovation system which promotes knowledge-based economy, instead of factor-driven economy, has been realized by many countries to be an obligatory system to improve national or regional competitiveness. It requires the collaboration of all stakeholders which are related to development to enhance innovation with specialization as the competitiveness value. Semarang and Balikpapan, two emerging cities in Indonesia, has implemented regional innovation system (RIS) with their own strengths and weaknesses. This study uses conceptual analysis with qualitative and quantitative methodology and The Innovation Policy Framework as tool to assess both cities’ performance. The study finds that both cities have basic understanding about innovation with specialization such as Semarang develops innovation in city tourism while Balikpapan enhances innovation in green economy. The hard challenges faced by both cities are integration of all stakeholders in enhancing innovation that however is still partially implemented. At the end, this study draws the concept of both cities to develop the system yet without neglecting their existed performance. Keywords: Balikpapan, collaboration, knowledge-based economy, regional innovation system, Semarang

Abstract

Abstract. Many firms in New Economy tend to depend more on intangible resources (i.e. knowledge and information) than tangible resources as in Old Economy. This shifting has made many firms favour the information technology for their daily business conducts today. The fast spreading of information leads to the fiercer competition than before. The great recognition of intangible assets somewhat calls for the notion of a new business model. Some enterprises and researchers expect this effort may generate more value for today’s competition through combining all assets in proper judgments. Jamu, Indonesian traditional herbal medicine, also cannot avoid the impact of New Economy competition. Jamu enterprises need to preserve the traditional value in the midst of the modern lifestyle. Then, the urgency to maintain Jamu competitive advantage is felt necessary. To provide the new business model of Jamu that is deemed as appropriate in New Economy’s competition is the aim of this study. Through analysing various literature, the authors heavily consider Product Service System (PSS), specifically the product-oriented type to construct a new business model for Jamu.Keyword: Jamu, new economy, PSS, product-oriented, business model

Abstract

Abstract. Product Development is essential for the company to stay steady or advance in the market competition. However, the main challenge in product development is associated with the uncertaincy risks that may appeared during the design process. Such risks may affect the success rate  of the product development and may contribute either to a small or a huge loss, in  which the sustainability of the company can also be affected. To mitigate the risks in product development, risk management is critical. CV. XYZ is a company producing dairy-based products such as mozzarella cheese and yogurt. This research is aimed to identify the potential appeared risks, to arrange the priority  order of risk agents and to conceptualize the risk mitigation strategy to be applied. A Yogurt drink product development is needed by CV. XYZ to support the company goals of the product and market expansion. House of Risk (HOR) method was used in this research. Two phases included in the identification process, namely marketing and product development design. The research results have examined  20 risks with 27 identified risk agents. Using the Aggregate Risk Potential (ARP) value, and Pareto 80:20 principal, this study provides a strategic guideline as how to mitigate the top-three identified risk agents.                                                                                                                      Keywords: House of Risk (HOR), Risk Management, Product Development, Yogurt Drink

Abstract

Abstract Innovation should be followed by profitable commercialization to have a sustainable business. Teece (1986) identified that it is often not the innovator who introduces a new process, product or service who profits the most from an innovation, but instead suppliers, cooperators, customers and competitors. In emerging markets, especially in Indonesia, it is challenging to do innovation due to the lack of infrastructure. This study explores innovation-driven enterprise relationships with firm financial performance measures by firm profitability. To identify the innovation-driven enterprise financing capabilities and innovation, the study used company age, R&D expense, sales, sales growth, debt ratio and retained earnings as independent variables. Firm profitability performance was measured by return on assets (ROA). R&D expenses of innovation-driven enterprises had a positive correlation with firm financial performance. Sales and retained earnings had a positive correlation with R&D expense. However, company age, debt ratio and sales growth had a weak negative correlation with corporate innovation activities. Retained earnings had a positive correlation and was the biggest determinant of firm profitability. It was shown that innovation-driven enterprises in Indonesia are financing their innovation with retained earnings (internal financing) and not debt (external financing). Keywords: Innovation, sustainable business, financial performance, R&D expense, internal financing

Abstract

Abstract. Development of e-Government in Indonesia continues to roll and run in every government agency, both in central government and local government. Implementation of e-Government means that there are government's efforts to build and improve the quality of public services and internal operations in each regional apparatus organization effectively and efficiently. These activities inline with one of the bureaucracy reform mission, that is the modernization of government bureaucracy through the using of information and communication technology optimization to support bureaucracy reform vision and the creation of good governance. The development and implementation of e-Government currently mostly implemented by each regional apparatus organization. This condition makes it difficult to exchange data and information related to multisectoral activities due to data and information spread across various databases from different applications, platform, environment and architecture without good documentation. In preparation for arranging the e-Government architecture, we will use The Open Group Architecture Framework - Architecture Development Method as an enterprise architecture framework. The purpose of this research is to study and conceptualize e-Government interoperability and integration solutions of all existing applications and providing some model documents such as e-Government Architecture Vision, Integrated Business Model References Architecture, and Integrated Data Model References Architecture. Keywords: E-Government, interoperability and integration, service oriented architecture, TOGAF-ADM, information and communication technology
