Abstract

Virus is a borderline between living and non-living things, not capable of reproduction but only do this process utilizing the machineries of a living cell. For most ordinary people in the Philippines, the corona virus that caused Corona Virus Disease in December 2019 (COVID 19) was not of big importance. The Philippine government was just observing the usual measure such as installing thermal screening in the airports to detect arriving passengers with flu. The virus continued to spread to the whole world. The continuous spread of the virus is the reason why mass media in print, in television, and other forms were used to educate people on how to prevent the spread of the virus. The Philippines positive cases were increasing almost exponentially. The Philippines government was getting more serious on the corona virus problem. President Rodrigo Duterte announced in the evening of March 12, 2020 of the month-long lock down of the whole Metro Manila from March 15 to April 14, 2020 as the country looks forward to contain the COVID 19. Land, domestic air and domestic sea to and from Metro Manila were suspended within the period. Social and religious activities that involved mass gathering were banned. Conferences, seminars and like activities were postponed and people were advised to stay at home. The lock down has brought about both negative and positive things to the government and to the people which can be observed commonly in every place. The negative things could fall into economic, social and psychological aspects. If corona virus brings negative and undesirable things in the community and in the Philippines, there are also positive things that sprouted. It is true indeed that a misfortune or a disaster to a place or persons can be an opportunity to others. Lots of things which are favorable and beneficial to many people and to the nature during the lock down which include economic, social and ecological aspects. The current situation brought by the corona virus that resulted to lock down implemented by the government of the Philippines gives an opportunity to learn the value of compassion and empathy in times of crisis. COVID 19 is bad, but people can also see the good effect of it. In the Philippines, people always boost the morale of our fellow Filipinos to unite in this battle to overcome this crisis and “together, we heal as one”.

Abstract

This study aims to present a mathematical linguistic analysis in establishing the relations between TRs, LMs, potential senses, and actual senses by using the case of the preposition on found in academic texts under the framework of Trajector (TR) and Landmark (LM) configurations. Data were corpora taken from 10 bachelor’s theses written by Indonesian students. To sort the data, Ant Conc 3.4.1.0 was used to parse clauses or sentences based on the TR-LM configurations. Based on the TR-LM configurations, a mathematical model was developed to discover how these variables are quantitatively related to the number of potential senses produced by using a geometric representation of TR and LM. This study indicates that the relation between TRs and LMs, on the one hand, and the sum of potential senses, on the other, follows the integral function of , which means that the total number of potential senses of Ps equals the integral of TR with respect to LM. Meanwhile, the total number of actual senses, ∑As can be obtained by the integral function of , which equals TR.LM + C where C is -Ls representing the constant of the number of lost senses. This mathematical modeling confirms that TR-LM configurations may be used to generate senses which prove the polysemous nature of prepositions.

Abstract

The effect of surfactant on the thickness of a thin film bounded by a solid surface and a moving liquid drop was investigated. We proposed a model so that parameters from the liquid drop can be stated in a parameter that acts as normal pressure to the thin film. Using the lubrication approximation, the model was reduced to a set of nonlinear partial differential equations in terms of the film thickness and surfactant concentration. Since we were interested in the role of the surfactant in lifting up the drop, we assumed that the density of the drop is higher than the density of the thin film. Numerically, the results show that the presence of the surfactant tends to delay the decrease of the film thickness insignificantly. However, when the surfactant was added into the system, it tends to significantly increase the film thickness for a certain range value of the normal pressure.

Abstract

Automotive racing is one of the favorite sports of human being. There have been many developments in past decades by car engineers to improve the performance of the engine and increase the aerodynamic efficiency of the race cars to achieve a better lap time and get a better placement safely. One of the ways to improve the aerodynamic performance of a race car is to use rear spoilers. This study by using ANSYS FLUENT numerically investigated the effect of the spoiler shape and setting angle on the aerodynamic characteristics of a race car and then it was validated by conducting wind tunnel experiment. Lift and drag coefficient of NACA0012, NACA4412, and S1223 are determined in Reynold’s number of 2×105 as an airfoil and as spoiler on ERC model which is a conceptual car model inspired by Porsche 911. It was found that ERC model with spoiler would have better aerodynamic efficiency compared to ERC model without spoiler. Also, S1223 at -6 degrees was identified as the optimized configuration as it generates the highest downforce. Even though the drag coefficient at this setting angle is slightly higher, but in terms of stability and handling IT is at its best. Overall, this study would help car manufacturers, for racing and commercial purposes, to have a better insight into the effect of spoiler configuration on the aerodynamic performance of cars. Hence, the stability, handling, and efficiency of the cars can be further improved by selecting the suitable spoiler configuration.

Abstract

The new Coronavirus (namely Covid-19) discovered in 2019 in Wuhan has sickened more than three million people in worldwide. Because Covid-19 is spreading so fast and killing so many people, it has encouraged researchers to conduct research and publish it in various mass media, including journals. This study aims to analyze the scope of Covid-19 research using a bibliometric review. To obtain information about Covid-19 studies, the Scopus database was used. Topic areas with titles, keywords, and abstract criteria in Covid-19 studies were used as a reference for extracting search results. Search result extraction was done using VOSviewer. After that, the results of bibliometric mapping were analyzed further. A total of 3,513 articles were found in the Scopus database accessed on April 25, 2020. There was a significant increase in the number of publications on Covid-19 from 2019 to 2020. Among all countries, China contributed the most publications. Meanwhile, the keywords coronavirus, pandemic, and impact turned out to be the area's most widely discussed. Through VOSViewer we analyzed how many articles have been published about Covid-19 and its relationships to a topic area. This review certainly can provide a reference point for further research related to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Abstract

Indonesia faces decreasing in its number during period of 2018-2019 according to SINTA (Indonesian scientific indexing) database. This situation is alarming amid country’s effort to improve its research and development from which the scientific publication has been used as a measure. This article presents a dataset of bibliometric from all Indonesian institutions (424 institutions as of January 2020) indexed by Scopus database. We collected data on documents per year and document type. Different from other datasets, this article presents longitudinal data from 2014-2019, in which during this period dramatic change occurs from steep rise, exponential, and degradation during 2018-2019. We analyzed publication number from leading institutions at different points in time and compared document types (i.e., number of journal article and conference paper, in which both types are the driving force of Indonesia’s growing scientific publication number). Since this dataset covers all country’s institutions, it is potential for reuse by policy makers in research and development, researchers from each institution, as well as other stakeholders.

Abstract

In mushroom cultivation of white oyster mushroom (P. ostreatus), problems in the contamination during the production are typically found. This contamination is due to the issue in controlling temperature during the media sterilization for growing the fungus (bag-log). This suboptimal sterilization causes unwanted bacteria and spores to grow. To reduce the amount of contamination, the purpose of this study was to demonstrate and evaluate the temperature distribution using one convection pipe with diameter of 6 and 8 cm. The fuel used for this sterilization process is rice husk. Sterilization itself aims to kill other unwanted bacteria and spores on the bag-log. Sterilization was done by traditional steaming bag-log drums arranged in four rows upwards for 6 hours. Convection pipes were built in drums. The steamer was done by performing two retrievals of data. From the experiment results, the use of convection pipe of 8 cm was better than the convection pipe of 6 cm. This is shown from the amount of fungal contamination in convection pipes were less in 8. The result of temperature measurement using dual laser infrared thermometer was also completed and interpreted using Matrix Laboratory with interpolation method to get heat distribution result.

Abstract

Algebraic proficiency, including procedural fluency and conceptual understanding, is widely discussed worldwide. Algebraic proficiency refers largely to proficiency in symbolic representations which can be investigated through a framework of symbol sense. This research, therefore, aims to analyze students’ algebraic proficiency in terms of symbol sense. We set up a pilot study, involving 22 Indonesian mathematics education students (18-19 year old), in the form of two weeks teaching that combine a conventional approach and the use of a camera calculator in the learning and teaching of quadratic and related equations. The results showed that more than half number of students lacks of symbol sense in the sense that they tend to use procedural strategies rather than symbol sense strategies in solving equations. From the perspective of symbol sense, we concluded that the students acquired more on procedural fluency than on conceptual understanding.

Abstract

This study investigated understanding of agricultural vocational school teachers about green skills and its entity in the curriculum. Data were gathered through survey of teachers from fifteen agricultural vocational high school of agricultural food processing technology study program in West Java Province, Indonesia regarding their understanding about green skills. The results showed that the teachers had less knowledge of green skills, limited to environmental issues. However, they agreed that students needed to be equipped with green skills. The entity of green skills has not been stated explicitly in the curriculum of agricultural vocational school. However, the teachers argued that green skills could be embedded in the subjects of the existing curriculum. The findings of this preliminary study indicated the need to increase teacher understanding of green skills and curriculum development in agricultural vocational schools to meet industrial needs in order to support sustainable development in accordance with the UNESCO strategy for vocational education.

Abstract

This paper proposed a grape drying machine using computer vision and Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) method. Computer vision is for taking grapes’ image on conveyor, whereas MLP is for controlling grape drying machine and classifying its output. To evaluate the proposed, a kind of grapes are put on conveyor of the machine and their images are taken every two min. Some parameters of MLP to control the drying machine includes dried grape, temperature, grape area, motor position, and motion speed. Those parameters are to adjust an appropriate MLP’s output, including motion control and heater control. Two different temperatures are employed on the machine, including 60 and 75°C. The results showed that the grape could be dried with similar area 3800 pixel at the 770th min using temperature 60°C and at the 410th min using temperature 75°C.  Comparing between them, the similar ratio could also be achieved at 0.64 with different time 360 min. Indeed, the temperature setting at 75°C resulted faster drying performance.
